Taxonomy & naming
Rhinogobius filamentosus was described by Wu in 1939, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) — the authority for valid names used throughout this atlas — currently places it in the genus Rhinogobius, family Oxudercidae. The specific epithet filamentosus, from the Latin filamentum (a thread or filament), almost certainly references an elongated or filamentous fin ray, a character found in several members of this genus. The old combination under Gobius filamentosus or Tukugobius filamentosus may appear in early literature; Rhinogobius is the currently accepted assignment.
Rhinogobius is one of the most species-rich goby genera in East Asia, with well over 100 valid species and new descriptions still appearing as molecular and morphological work untangles the group. The gobies as a whole are the largest family of marine fishes; the freshwater representatives in this genus are a small but ecologically prominent subset that has colonised rivers and streams across continental East Asia and Japan. Family Oxudercidae — the placement currently accepted for Rhinogobius and many other "gobiid" genera following recent molecular reclassification — contains the true gobies with the characteristic fused pelvic sucker disc, distinguishing them from the Eleotridae (sleepers and gudgeons), whose pelvic fins remain separate.
Morphology
Rhinogobius filamentosus is a small, slender-to-moderately-built stream goby with the classic body plan of the genus: a somewhat flattened, torpedo-shaped form adapted to life in flowing water, with a broad, slightly rounded head, large eyes set high on the skull, and the two dorsal fins typical of gobies. The most diagnostic family character is the fused pelvic disc — the two pelvic fins have been co-opted into a ventral suction cup that allows the fish to hold station against current on the streambed, a feat impossible for the gudgeons and sleepers whose pelvins remain free. The epithet filamentosus suggests an elongated or filament-like fin ray, most likely in one of the dorsal fins or in the pectoral region, that sets this species apart from close congeners.
Typical Rhinogobius adults fall in the range of 1–3 in standard length; the data for this species specifically are sparse, but it is unlikely to exceed 2.5–3 in. Males in the genus generally display bolder markings and extended fin rays during the breeding season; females are smaller and more plainly coloured. Sexual dimorphism follows the standard rhinogobiid pattern, with males showing intensified patterning on the head and fins when competing for territories or courting.
Habitat
Like most members of its genus, Rhinogobius filamentosus inhabits the clean, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams and rivers of East Asia — an environment characterised by gravel and stone substrates, strong current, high dissolved oxygen and low turbidity. Rhinogobius as a group spans a wide latitudinal range across China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan, and many species are subtropical to temperate rather than tropical; temperatures in the 55–72 °F range are typical for the colder-water members, with some experiencing marked seasonal variation.
This is a strictly freshwater species, or one tolerating only the mildest low-brackish conditions at river mouths; it does not need and should not receive the salt levels appropriate for bumblebee gobies or knight gobies. The preferred microhabitat is the benthos — the species lives on and among the rocks and gravel of the streambed, holding position with the pelvic sucker disc in water that would sweep less-adapted fish away. Dense submerged vegetation is less important than substrate complexity: crevices, stones, leaf accumulations and overhanging banks provide cover and territorial structure.
Feeding
Rhinogobius filamentosus is a micro-predator in the mould of all its congeners. In wild streams it forages among the gravel and rock surfaces for small aquatic invertebrates: copepods, water fleas, small crustaceans, chironomid larvae and other insect larvae drifting or living on the benthos. It is a visual, active hunter rather than a filter feeder or detritivore.
In the aquarium the species should be offered a varied diet of small live and frozen foods: bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, copepods, cyclops, grindal worms and similar items. Like most Rhinogobius, it is likely to show little enthusiasm for dry flake or pellets, especially when first acquired; relying on prepared food alone risks malnutrition and loss of condition. Conditioning a pair for breeding calls for regular provision of live or high-quality frozen foods. Because it is a bottom-dweller, foods should reach the substrate rather than being consumed at the surface by faster tank-mates.
Mating
Rhinogobius filamentosus is a resident stream species with a complete freshwater life cycle — it is not amphidromous, meaning the larvae do not develop at sea. This makes it fundamentally different from the cling-gobies of the Sicydiinae and from many other gobies whose hatchlings are swept to the ocean. For the keeper, this residency is the critical fact: the species can, in principle, complete its full breeding cycle in the aquarium without access to saltwater.
Males of rhinogobiid gobies are territorial and establish and defend a spawning site — a crevice, an undersurface of a stone, a cave, or a hollow in the substrate — well before females come into breeding condition. Courtship involves display behaviour in which the male intensifies his colouration and extends his fins to attract the female to the prepared site. In a tank with multiple males, territorial interactions will be frequent; caves and line-of-sight breaks are essential to prevent chronic harassment.
Breeding
Rhinogobius filamentosus breeds by the standard cave/substrate-spawning method shared across the resident gobies: the female enters the male's defended site and deposits a clutch of small adhesive eggs on a firm surface — the underside of a stone, the roof of a cave, the wall of a crevice or a shell. Once spawning is complete she departs, and from that point the male alone guards and tends the eggs, fanning them continuously with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygen flow and removing any unfertilised or fungused eggs.
Incubation at the cool-to-subtropical temperatures natural to the species — roughly 64–72 °F — typically takes seven to ten days. The newly hatched fry are small and require very fine first foods: infusoria, rotifers or a commercial liquid fry food in the early days, transitioning to copepod nauplii and newly hatched brine shrimp as growth proceeds. This is genuine parental care by the male, a trait common across Rhinogobius, and it makes careful observation of the male's activity the most reliable indicator that spawning has occurred. For higher fry survival, the egg-bearing surface or cave can be moved to a separate rearing vessel once spawning is confirmed.
In the aquarium
A species-only tank or a carefully chosen community with small, non-competitive bottom-dwellers suits Rhinogobius filamentosus best. The tank should be set up to mirror a cool East Asian stream: strong filtration providing good current and high dissolved oxygen, a gravel-and-stone substrate with plenty of flat rocks and caves to serve both as territorial landmarks and spawning sites, and minimal sediment. Unlike tropical community fish, many Rhinogobius species are intolerant of warm water; temperatures in the 59–72 °F range are appropriate, and some individuals or populations may require a seasonal cool-down period to come into breeding condition. Confirm the temperature range from the source population where possible.
The tank must be covered securely — gobies are accomplished jumpers and a gap in the lid is a death sentence for a small benthic species. Males are territorial toward one another and will fight persistently in a confined space; provide caves and broken sight lines even in a single-pair setup. This species does not need salt. Feed primarily on live and frozen small invertebrates rather than relying on dry food, and maintain excellent water quality with regular partial water changes. Keep it away from large or fast competitive fish that will outcompete it at the feeding site; small schooling fish in the mid-water are a compatible and useful dither pairing.
Conservation
Rhinogobius filamentosus has not been formally evaluated on the IUCN Red List and carries the status Not Evaluated (NE); no published conservation assessment has been located for this species. The absence of an assessment does not imply the species is secure — small range-restricted stream gobies across East Asia are routinely NE or Data Deficient simply because the assessment resources have not been directed at them.
The wider threats to Rhinogobius habitats in East Asia are well-documented: dam construction, water abstraction, agricultural run-off, channelisation and invasive species have degraded or fragmented stream systems across China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Species with limited natural ranges are most vulnerable to these pressures. Where Rhinogobius filamentosus falls on this spectrum is unknown without a completed range survey. Trade pressure is likely to be low given the lack of a common name and the species' relative obscurity in the hobby; most fish encountered in the trade under the genus name are bred in captivity or collected from common widespread species rather than this one specifically.
