Taxonomy & naming

Rhinogobius flumineus was described by Mizuno in 1960, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) — the authority for valid names — places it in the genus Rhinogobius, family Oxudercidae. The Oxudercidae are true gobies, one of the lineages within the broader Gobioidei that share the characteristic fused pelvic fins forming a sucker disc. The genus Rhinogobius is large and exclusively East Asian, encompassing dozens of freshwater stream species spread across China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan; many species remain undescribed or have been described only in Japanese or Chinese ichthyological literature, which accounts for the paucity of English-language records for this species.

The species epithet flumineus is Latin for 'of the river' or 'river-dwelling', directly naming the fluvial habitat this goby occupies. Earlier authors in the genus sometimes placed Rhinogobius species under older genus combinations (Gobius, Ctenogobius), but the genus Rhinogobius is well-established as the current valid placement. Morphology

As a member of Rhinogobius, this species shares the typical body plan of the genus: a somewhat cylindrical, streamlined form with a slightly depressed head, large eyes set high on the skull, and two dorsal fins. The pelvic fins are fully fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc — the defining morphological character of the true gobies (Oxudercidae and allies) — which the fish uses to cling to stones and hard substrate in current. Feeding

Rhinogobius flumineus is a micro-predator, as is typical for the genus. Flake and pellet foods are typically refused or taken only poorly, and fish kept solely on dry foods tend to lose condition. Offering a varied menu of small frozen and live invertebrate foods is the most reliable way to maintain health and prepare a pair for breeding. Food particle size should be matched to the small mouth typical of the genus.

Mating

Rhinogobius species are substrate and cave spawners with genuine male parental care — not egg-scatterers, and not mouthbrooders. The male establishes and defends a small territory centered on a suitable spawning site: a cavity beneath a flat stone, a crevice between rocks, a length of pipe, or a similar hard-surfaced enclosed space. Courtship involves the male displaying to females, intensifying any colour markings and performing lateral displays to advertise his territory and condition.

The whole mating and spawning cycle takes place in fresh water for resident Rhinogobius species; whether R. flumineus is fully resident or has any amphidromous larval phase is not confirmed in accessible records, but the genus includes both strategies. Resident species — which appear to be the majority — complete their entire life cycle in the river, which means they can in principle be bred in an aquarium without access to saltwater. If the species proves to be amphidromous (larvae swept to the sea), captive breeding would effectively be impossible, but this is not confirmed for this species.

Breeding

Based on the pattern of the genus, R. flumineus is presumed to be a substrate and cave spawner in which the female deposits adhesive eggs on the ceiling or walls of the chosen cavity and the male takes charge from that point, guarding the clutch and fanning the eggs with his pectoral fins to keep them oxygenated and free of debris until hatching. This is genuine parental care concentrated in the male, a pattern shared across most resident freshwater Rhinogobius species.

For keepers who successfully condition a pair, a spawning cave or inverted flat stone placed in the tank provides the necessary site. Hatching time in similarly sized gobies is typically around one week at cooler temperate temperatures. Fry are small and require micro-foods such as infusoria or rotifers initially, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp. Because accessible data for this species are sparse, keepers should treat the above as genus-level guidance and expect variation in detail. The amphidromous status of the species remains unconfirmed; if larvae require marine development, captive breeding will not succeed regardless of spawning conditions.

In the aquarium

Rhinogobius flumineus is a small, active, cool-water stream goby suited to a species or species-group tank rather than a warm community aquarium. A modest aquarium — 23.5 in or larger — aquascaped with a gravel and cobble substrate, flat stones providing potential cave sites, and a powerhead or filter outlet creating good current is appropriate. The tank must be covered: Rhinogobius are adept jumpers and will find any gap. Temperate or subtropical temperatures, estimated around 61–75 °F based on the genus, are more appropriate than the 79–82 °F of a tropical community setup; many East Asian Rhinogobius appreciate a seasonal cool period and may not thrive long-term in a permanently heated tank.

Males are territorial and will spar with each other; providing multiple cave sites and line-of-sight breaks with stones reduces aggression in a group. The diet must include live and frozen invertebrate foods — this is not a fish that will thrive on flake alone. Water quality must be high, as stream-dwelling gobies are sensitive to organic waste and low oxygen; good filtration and regular water changes are non-negotiable. Given the sparsity of English-language aquarium records for this species, keepers should look to the broader Rhinogobius hobby community in Japan and China for detailed experience reports.

Conservation

This is common for small, range-restricted East Asian stream endemics that fall outside the coverage priorities of global conservation programmes.
