Taxonomy & naming
Mogurnda cingulata was described by the Australian ichthyologist Gerald R. Allen in 1996. The genus Mogurnda — often called the purple-spotted gudgeons or mogurnda gudgeons in Australian parlance — belongs to the family Eleotridae, the sleepers, which the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) places alongside other Australasian eleotrids such as Hypseleotris (carp gudgeons), Oxyeleotris (sleeper perch) and the New Guinean Tateurndina. These are not true gobies. The true gobies (families Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, Oxudercidae) carry their pelvic fins fused into a cup-like adhesive disc; the eleotrids keep both pelvic fins free and separate — the easiest single character for distinguishing the two lineages in the hand.
The species epithet cingulata derives from the Latin cingulum (belt, girdle), referring to the banded or girdled patterning along the flanks. The genus Mogurnda has a complex taxonomic history within Australian ichthyology, and several species have passed through synonymies under earlier combinations, but Mogurnda is the current accepted generic placement under the Catalog of Fishes. The hobbyist trade often markets these fish as "gobies," but "gudgeon" or "mogurnda" is the more accurate designation.
Morphology
Mogurnda cingulata is a small, stout-bodied sleeper reaching approximately 2.5–3 in in total length. Like all mogurnda gudgeons it has a broad, depressed head, a large upturned mouth suited to ambush predation, and a robust body tapering towards the tail. The name cingulata describes the most prominent feature of the colour pattern: a series of bold transverse bands or saddles across the flanks, overlaid on a base of pale to mid-brown or olive tones; the exact expression of banding and any associated spots or blotches varies between individuals and may differ between the sexes.
As in other Mogurnda, the pelvic fins are conspicuously separate — there is no fused sucker disc. The dorsal fin is divided into a spiny anterior portion and a soft-rayed posterior section. Sexual dimorphism in the genus is typically expressed as larger body size in males and fuller coloration during the breeding season, with males often showing more vivid patterning and larger, more extended fins. Species-level colour data for M. cingulata specifically are sparse in the available literature.
Habitat
Mogurnda cingulata is a freshwater endemic of northern Australia, inhabiting warm subtropical and tropical streams, pools, and slow-moving reaches typical of the Australian monsoonal north. Mogurnda gudgeons generally favour sheltered microhabitats — slower sections of stream, backwater pools, vegetated margins, and areas with submerged wood, rocky substrate, or accumulated debris that provide cover and ambush points consistent with their predatory lifestyle.
The species occupies freshwater throughout its life; it is not amphidromous and does not require a marine larval phase, nor does it tolerate or benefit from added salt. Water conditions in the streams of tropical northern Australia are warm — temperatures commonly in the mid-twenties to low thirties Celsius during the wet season — and can range from moderately soft to harder depending on local geology. Specific water-chemistry data for M. cingulata in the field are sparse, but the general Mogurnda template of warm, freshwater habitat with structured cover holds.
Feeding
Mogurnda cingulata is a micro-predator, hunting small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans, and other invertebrates by stealth from cover. The large mouth and ambush posture of the mogurnda gudgeons are adaptations to this sit-and-wait strategy rather than active pursuit; the fish lunges at prey that venture within range rather than chasing it through open water.
In the aquarium, M. cingulata should be offered a varied diet of small live and frozen foods: bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, and similar invertebrate-based foods are the core of a healthy diet. It may learn to accept good-quality sinking pellets or other dry foods in time, but a diet heavy in live and frozen offerings will maintain better condition and colour. Like most eleotrids, it tends to ignore, or at best poorly accept, flake food intended for more generalised community fish.
Mating
Mogurnda gudgeons are resident freshwater cave or substrate spawners, and M. cingulata is presumed to follow the standard genus pattern. Males establish and defend a territory centered on a chosen spawning site — a cave, crevice, hollow log, undercut stone, or similar sheltered cavity — and court ripe females at that site. Courtship in Mogurnda involves fin displays and colour intensification; the male flares and angles himself to show the female the quality of his chosen site and his own readiness.
Because the whole reproductive cycle takes place within fresh water with no marine larval phase, pairs can in principle form and mate within the confines of a well-structured aquarium, given adequate cover and appropriate conditioning. Males are territorial towards other males, particularly during courtship, and a tank with enough line-of-sight breaks reduces aggression to a manageable level.
Breeding
In common with other members of the genus, M. cingulata is a cave or substrate spawner with male parental care. The female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on the roof or wall of the chosen cavity or on a hard, sheltered surface, after which the male takes over sole responsibility: he guards the clutch, fans the eggs continuously to maintain oxygenation, and drives off any intruder that approaches. Incubation time in tropical temperatures is typically in the range of five to ten days.
Hatchlings are small and require appropriately fine first foods — infusoria or similarly sized micro-organisms initially, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp and microworm as the fry grow. The male's dedicated guarding through incubation means that in a mature, well-planted tank with suitable cave structures, fry can appear with relatively little keeper intervention, though transferring the egg-laden cave or slate to a separate rearing vessel once the female has spawned is standard practice for maximising survival. Species-specific breeding accounts for M. cingulata are sparse, but the pattern described here is consistent with the genus.
In the aquarium
Mogurnda cingulata suits a species tank or a community of similarly sized, non-nippy Australian natives; the compact 2.5–3 in adult size makes a tank of 15–20 US gal reasonable for a pair or small group, with larger volumes accommodating a small colony and providing the territory separation that males need. The tank should be structured: rocks, pieces of driftwood, dense planting or even purpose-built ceramic caves give the fish shelter, reduce inter-male tension, and provide the spawning sites the species needs to breed. A darker substrate and some leaf litter are not required but are welcomed.
Water quality should be warm (roughly 72–86 °F, consistent with Australian tropical streams), well-filtered but not heavily turbulent, and strictly freshwater — no salt is required or beneficial. The diet must be meaty: offer bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, and similar small frozen or live invertebrate foods as the dietary staple. A lid is advisable; like most eleotrids, mogurnda gudgeons are capable of jumping. Compatible tank mates in an Australian-themed setup might include small rainbowfish or other native gudgeons, though the mogurnda's predatory mouth sets a lower bound on fish size: anything that fits in that mouth is at risk.
Conservation
Mogurnda cingulata has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; we record it here as Not Evaluated (NE) rather than assign a status that has not been determined. Small Australian freshwater endemics of this kind are often simply overlooked in global assessment cycles, even when they may be moderately restricted in range.
The broader pressures on freshwater fish in tropical northern Australia — altered hydrology, introduced predators (including tilapia and gambusia), grazing-induced bank erosion, and water extraction — are real and apply in principle to any range-limited endemic. There is no evidence of a trade-driven decline for M. cingulata, and the species has limited representation in the international hobby trade compared with more widely kept Mogurnda species. Any wild-collected specimens should be sourced from responsible, licensed Australian suppliers, and captive propagation, which is achievable given the genus's amenable breeding biology, is the preferable route when fish can be obtained.
