Mogurnda aurifodinae, the goldfields gudgeon, is a small Australian freshwater sleeper — and, like all the gudgeons in this atlas, it is not a true goby. It belongs to the family Eleotridae, the sleepers and gudgeons, a sister lineage to the true gobies whose pelvic fins remain separate rather than fusing into the cup-shaped sucker disc that defines a real goby. Endemic to coastal Queensland streams in eastern Australia, this compact benthic fish is a resident freshwater cave-spawner whose male guards the eggs — a breeding strategy that keeps the whole life cycle in fresh water and makes the species at least potentially feasible to breed in captivity, unlike the amphidromous gobies whose larvae must develop at sea.

Taxonomy & naming

Mogurnda aurifodinae was described by the Australian ichthyologist James Douglas Ogilby in 1898, with the type locality in Colosseum Stream near Colosseum, Queensland, Australia. The Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — places it in the genus Mogurnda and the family Eleotridae. This is a sleeper or gudgeon, not a true goby: the true gobies (Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, Oxudercidae) carry their pelvic fins fused into a cup-like sucker disc, while the eleotrids, including all the Australian gudgeons, keep their pelvic fins separate. The hobby sometimes calls these fish gobies regardless, but Mogurnda is squarely in the sleeper camp.

The genus Mogurnda was established by Gill in 1863 for the Australian purple-spotted gudgeons and their relatives. It is one of several endemic Australian and New Guinea eleotrid genera — alongside Hypseleotris, Oxyeleotris, Philypnodon and others — that make Australasia the core of eleotrid diversity. Mogurnda aurifodinae appears to have been described directly under Mogurnda by Ogilby; no confirmed earlier combination under Eleotris or Gobius is established in the literature, though older eleotrid synonymy is complex and the Catalog of Fishes should be consulted for any revision.

Morphology

Mogurnda aurifodinae is a small, bottom-dwelling fish estimated at roughly 1.5–3 in standard length, consistent with the size range of similar Mogurnda species. Like other gudgeons it is somewhat cylindrical in cross-section anteriorly, with a large blunt head, broad mouth suited to seizing prey, and tapering body. The species name aurifodinae — golden mines — is thought to refer to a golden-spotted or golden-barred patterning on the body, a hallmark of the prettier Mogurnda species.

The pelvic fins are separate and unmodified — the definitive character separating this fish from the true gobies, whose pelvic fins are fused into the diagnostic sucker disc. The two dorsal fins are distinct, the first spiny and the second soft-rayed, which is typical of the Eleotridae. Detailed colour descriptions and exact mensural data for this species are sparse in the readily accessible literature; accounts based on closely related Mogurnda species indicate males tend to be larger and more intensely coloured than females, but species-specific dimorphism data for M. aurifodinae are not confirmed in the available sources.

Habitat

Mogurnda aurifodinae is a freshwater endemic of coastal Queensland, Australia. Its type locality is Colosseum Stream at Colosseum, Queensland, and it appears to be restricted to streams of the coastal Queensland drainage. Typical habitat for small Australian gudgeons of this kind consists of clear, flowing streams with rocky or mixed substrates, patches of aquatic vegetation and leaf litter, and well-oxygenated water.

This is a strictly freshwater species. Unlike several Indo-Pacific sleepers — Dormitator, Eleotris, Bostrychus, Ophiocara — that routinely use brackish estuarine habitats, Mogurnda aurifodinae shows no known tolerance for or reliance on salt water, and it is not amphidromous: its entire life cycle takes place within fresh water. Water temperatures in coastal Queensland streams span roughly 64–79 °F across seasons, with pH in the neutral to mildly acidic range (approximately 6.5–7.5) typical of Australian drainage systems.

Feeding

Mogurnda aurifodinae is a micro-predator, as are the other small Mogurnda gudgeons. It forages along the bottom, taking small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, worms and similar small prey — from among the substrate and leaf litter. It is a benthic ambush predator by disposition, resting quietly and lunging at prey rather than actively swimming in mid-water.

In the aquarium this translates to a diet of small live and frozen foods: bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops and similar small-calibre invertebrate foods are ideal. Like most small eleotrids it is likely to ignore or refuse dry flake food, and a diet of only prepared foods will see it lose condition. Offering a variety of live and frozen invertebrate foods sized to its relatively small mouth is the surest path to good health and colour.

Mating

Mogurnda aurifodinae follows the resident Eleotridae breeding strategy rather than the amphidromous route: it does not send larvae to sea, but completes its full reproductive cycle within fresh water. A conditioning male secures and defends a cave, crevice, hollow log or firm overhanging surface as a nest site, and courts females into that territory. Males of Mogurnda are typically larger and more vividly coloured than females, and use colour and fin displays during courtship — a pattern consistent across the genus.

Courtship involves the male displaying at the entrance of the chosen spawning site and herding or leading a ripe female inside to spawn. Because no larvae disperse to the sea, pairs can in principle reproduce entirely within a well-maintained aquarium that provides suitable spawning sites.

Breeding

Breeding in Mogurnda aurifodinae follows the adhesive-egg, male-guarder mode typical of the resident Eleotridae. The female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on the roof or wall of the chosen cave or crevice and then withdraws. The male takes over: he guards the site, fans the eggs with his fins to maintain oxygenation and remove waste, and defends the nest against disturbance until the eggs hatch. This is genuine parental care — comparable to the cave-spawning cichlids — rather than the open-water egg-scattering of cyprinids or the mouthbrooding of African cichlids.

Species-specific captive breeding data for M. aurifodinae are not well-documented in the available hobbyist literature, and the species is not widely kept. Given the typical Mogurnda biology, a pair kept in appropriate conditions with cave spawning sites, clean water and a diet of live and frozen foods could be expected to breed following the pattern described above. Fry would be small at hatching and require micro-foods such as infusoria or paramecia before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Mogurnda aurifodinae is an obscure species in the hobby and is not commercially available through the mainstream trade; it occasionally appears through Australian aquarists and specialist collectors. For those who obtain it, care follows the general pattern for small resident eleotrids: a modest aquarium with clean, well-filtered fresh water, some flow, and ample hiding places in the form of caves, rock crevices, coconut shells, lengths of pipe or dense planting.

Water conditions should reflect its native Queensland streams: temperature 64–79 °F, pH around 6.5–7.5, and no added salt. It is not a community fish in the conventional sense — males can be territorial and will compete over caves and hiding spots — but it is not aggressive toward fish that are too large to eat. A species tank or a carefully selected community with fish of similar size and temperament gives best results. Like all eleotrids it is a potential jumper and the tank should be covered. Diet should be live and frozen invertebrate foods; dry flake is likely to be ignored. Given the species' limited captive history, careful observation is advisable when first establishing a group.

Conservation

Mogurnda aurifodinae has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigning a status the available evidence does not support. It is a range-restricted Queensland endemic — this alone means any habitat degradation in its native drainages carries outsized risk for the species. Threats typical of Queensland coastal streams include water extraction, catchment clearing, introduced species (particularly predatory fish such as tilapia and mosquitofish), and periodic drought intensified by a changing climate.

The species is essentially absent from the mainstream aquarium trade, so there is no significant collection pressure, and any specimens encountered in the hobby are likely wild-caught Australian natives for which collection is regulated under Queensland fisheries law. Conservation data are sparse, and the species would benefit from formal survey work and a proper IUCN assessment to establish its range and population status.
