Mogurnda furva, the black mogurnda, is a Critically Endangered sleeper gudgeon found only in Lake Kutubu, a highland lake in the Southern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea. Like all members of the family Eleotridae, it is not a true goby: its pelvic fins remain separate rather than fusing into the cup-shaped sucker disc that defines the true gobies (Gobiidae), making it a gudgeon — a sleeper — despite the hobby's loose use of the word "goby" for the whole assemblage. Described by Gerald R. Allen and J. Renyaan in 1996, M. furva is one of thirteen endemic fish species confined to Lake Kutubu's unusual lacustrine habitat, a place that has faced severe ecosystem degradation from oil and gas extraction over recent decades. It is rare in the aquarium trade and listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Mogurnda furva was described by Gerald R. Allen and J. Renyaan in 1996 from specimens collected in Lake Kutubu, Papua New Guinea. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) places it in the family Eleotridae — the sleepers and gudgeons — within the diverse Australasian genus Mogurnda. The genus currently contains around a dozen species distributed across New Guinea and Australia, several of them known from restricted lake or river systems.

The critical taxonomic point for the hobbyist is that Mogurnda is not a true goby. The true gobies belong to the families Gobiidae, Gobionellidae and Oxudercidae; they carry their paired pelvic fins fused into a single concave disc that functions as a sucker, allowing them to cling to rocks in fast current. The eleotrids — Mogurnda and its relatives — retain separate, unfused pelvic fins. This single character immediately separates the two lineages, and it explains why sleepers and gudgeons cannot anchor themselves to substrates the way a Stiphodon or Sicyopterus can. The species epithet furva is Latin for "dark" or "dusky", describing the fish's colouration.

Morphology

Mogurnda furva reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 4.5 in (males/unsexed), placing it among the larger members of the genus. The body follows the typical Mogurnda form: moderately elongate, slightly compressed, with two distinct dorsal fins. FishBase records 9 dorsal spines and 11–12 dorsal soft rays, 1 anal spine and 10–13 anal soft rays, and 33 vertebrae.

The common name "black mogurnda" refers to the species' generally dusky or darkened colouration, which distinguishes it from the more boldly patterned purple-spotted gudgeon (M. adspersa) and related species. The pelvic fins are separate — the diagnostic character of the family Eleotridae — and not fused into a sucker disc. Direct data on sexual dimorphism in M. furva are sparse in the published literature; related Mogurnda species typically show males with brighter or more extended fins, and females with a fuller body when gravid, but this has not been specifically documented for M. furva in available sources.

Habitat

Mogurnda furva is a strict endemic of Lake Kutubu, a highland lake in the Southern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea sitting at approximately 2625 ft above sea level. Lake Kutubu is described by researchers as the most unusual lacustrine habitat in the New Guinea–Australia region, supporting 13 endemic fish species found nowhere else on Earth. Within the lake, M. furva is associated with rocky substrates, where it presumably shelters among the stones and hunts small invertebrates.

The lake's waters are warm to warm-temperate for a highland system. Related Mogurnda species from lower elevations in New Guinea and Australia thrive at 59–77 °F (59–77 °F) and broad pH ranges, but precise water-chemistry data for Lake Kutubu itself — and specifically for M. furva's microhabitat — are sparse in the publicly available literature. This is a strictly freshwater fish with no brackish or estuarine component to its range.

Feeding

Mogurnda furva is a micro-predator, as are all members of the genus. Related Mogurnda species hunt small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and other benthic prey items, and the same diet can be inferred for M. furva from its family membership and rocky-substrate habitat.

In the aquarium, related Mogurnda (notably M. adspersa) are maintained on a diet of bloodworms, brine shrimp, frozen invertebrates and live prey. Like most eleotrids they are not dry-food enthusiasts and typically perform best on a varied schedule of live and frozen items. Larger specimens of the genus will also take small fish. Flake and pellet foods are often refused or accepted reluctantly; keepers who have maintained related species emphasise that varied live and frozen feeding is the key to good condition and colour.

Mating

Mogurnda furva belongs to a group of resident freshwater eleotrids — a category that includes the peacock gudgeon (Tateurndina ocellicauda) and the purple-spotted gudgeon (M. adspersa) — whose entire reproductive cycle takes place in fresh water. This contrasts with the amphidromous gudgeons (Eleotris, Dormitator, Gobiomorphus, Giuris) whose hatchlings must reach the sea to develop; because M. furva and its close relatives are full residents, they are at least in principle capable of completing their life cycle in a closed aquarium system.

Broadly across the genus and family, males hold and defend a cave, crevice or sheltered hard surface and court ripe females to that site. Direct courtship data for M. furva specifically are not available in the published sources accessed, but the pattern observed across Mogurnda and in Eleotridae generally is male territory-holding with fin-display courtship leading the female to the chosen spawning site.

Breeding

Members of the family Eleotridae, including Mogurnda, are cave and substrate spawners: the female deposits adhesive eggs on the wall or roof of a crevice, cave or hard surface, after which the male takes sole charge of the clutch — guarding the site, fanning the eggs with his fins and driving away intruders until the eggs hatch, typically within 8–10 days at tropical temperatures. This genuine paternal parental care is one of the hallmarks of the resident eleotrids and is well documented for the family as a whole.

Direct breeding accounts for M. furva in captivity are absent from available literature — the species is rare in the trade and its Critically Endangered status makes any captive population very small. The breeding mode can be inferred with confidence from family and genus membership: cave/substrate spawner with male egg-guarding, not egg-scattering and not mouthbrooding. Any keeper who does obtain a pair should provide multiple cave options (coconut shells, terracotta pipes, slate overhangs, hollow wood) and stable, high-quality water to encourage spawning.

In the aquarium

Mogurnda furva is extremely rare in the aquarium hobby and essentially unavailable through normal trade channels. Its Critically Endangered status, strict lake endemism and the environmental pressures on Lake Kutubu mean that wild-caught individuals are unlikely to appear legally or ethically in the trade, and no established captive-breeding program for the species is documented in the sources available.

For aquarists fortunate enough to obtain related Mogurnda species — such as M. adspersa or the various New Guinean Mogurnda — the husbandry principles that apply to the genus apply here by extension. A tank of at least 23.5 in for a pair, with rocky cover, caves or crevices for shelter and spawning, and subdued lighting suits the genus's habits. Water should be clean, well-filtered fresh water at 59–77 °F (59–77 °F), pH in the neutral to slightly alkaline range. Diet should centre on live and frozen invertebrates — bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, chopped earthworms — rather than dry foods. Males of this genus can be aggressive toward one another and toward smaller fish that can be swallowed; tankmates should be chosen with care. A lid is advisable, as eleotrids are capable jumpers.

Conservation

Mogurnda furva is assessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List — one of the most severe conservation categories, indicating very high risk of extinction in the wild. The principal driver of its decline is ecosystem degradation of Lake Kutubu, which has been subjected to decades of oil and gas extraction activity in and around the lake's catchment. These activities have altered the lake's hydrology, water chemistry and benthic habitats, threatening the entire endemic fish assemblage of which M. furva is a part.

Lake Kutubu's thirteen endemic fish species represent an extraordinary concentration of uniqueness for a single lake, and the pressures on them are ongoing. For M. furva specifically, the combination of an extremely small natural range — confined to a single lake — and persistent industrial pressure on that lake's ecosystem creates the conditions for rapid population collapse. The species is not established in captivity in any meaningful numbers, and there is no reported ex-situ conservation program for it. Hobbyists should be aware that any specimen offered for sale would almost certainly be wild-caught from an already highly stressed population, and acquisition should be treated with great caution.
