Taxonomy & naming
Stiphodon martenstyni was described by the German zoologist Georg Pfeffer in 1893. It belongs to the genus Stiphodon — a large, morphologically diverse group of small rheophilic cling-gobies found from the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka east through South and Southeast Asia to the Pacific islands and Japan. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) places Stiphodon in the family Oxudercidae and the subfamily Sicydiinae, the amphidromous stream gobies.
This is an important taxonomic point: Stiphodon martenstyni is a true goby. The true gobies (Gobiidae sensu lato, including Oxudercidae and Gobionellidae) are distinguished from the sleeper gudgeons (Eleotridae) by the fusion of the pelvic fins into a cup-shaped sucker disc — the character that allows cling-gobies to cling to and climb smooth wet rock in fast current. The sleepers and gudgeons (Eleotridae) keep their pelvic fins separate. Gobies are overwhelmingly a marine family; freshwater Stiphodon are the exception, belonging to a lineage that secondarily colonised inland streams but retained an obligate marine larval phase.
Earlier literature may refer to members of this genus under old combinations such as Sicydium or Gobius, but the Catalog of Fishes lists Stiphodon as the valid genus. No synonyms specific to martenstyni are widely documented in accessible sources.
Morphology
Stiphodon martenstyni is a small goby; field and aquarium records place adults at roughly 1–1.5 in standard length, in line with most Stiphodon. The body is slender and slightly cylindrical, typical of stream-adapted gobies that spend much of their time pressed against current-swept rock. The pelvic fins are fully fused into the cup-like sucker disc characteristic of true gobies, and this disc is the fish's main anchor in fast water.
As in many Stiphodon, males in breeding dress are substantially more colourful than females, often showing bright iridescent tones along the flanks and a darker head and dorsal stripe; females and juveniles are typically more cryptically barred in brown and grey. The first dorsal fin is relatively high. Specific colour descriptions for this species remain poorly documented in the accessible literature, and detailed accounts should be sought in primary ichthyological revisions of the genus.
Sexual dimorphism is marked in the genus as a whole: males are often more vivid and slightly larger, while females are plainer. Given the sparse published record for martenstyni specifically, any precise account of markings should be regarded as provisional.
Habitat
Stiphodon martenstyni is a rheophilic species, found in clear, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated freshwater streams. Like other Stiphodon, it favours rocky-bottom sections with strong current where biofilm, diatoms and fine algae coat the upper surfaces of stones. Water in these habitats is typically cool to warm (depending on altitude and latitude), well-oxygenated, and relatively low in organic matter. The fish spends most of its time on the rock surface in or just above the main current.
Based on the authority record and the general Stiphodon distribution in the eastern archipelago belt of Southeast Asia, the species is associated with streams of Borneo and the Indonesian island system, though the original description locality and full range require confirmation in a primary revision. These streams are the antithesis of the still, tea-stained blackwater so often imagined for tropical Asian fish: they are clear, fast, and thoroughly aerated, fed by upland drainages and emptying eventually to the coast — the same coastal connection that makes amphidromous larval dispersal possible.
Feeding
Stiphodon martenstyni is an aufwuchs grazer. It scrapes biofilm — a thin matrix of diatoms, cyanobacteria, green algae and associated microorganisms — from the upper surfaces of submerged rocks using its modified, comb-like or spatulate teeth. This is the dominant and essentially exclusive food source in the wild; there is very little evidence that Stiphodon actively hunts invertebrate prey, and the gut contents of Sicydiinae more broadly are dominated by algae and diatoms with minor amounts of organic detritus.
In the aquarium, this feeding specialisation is the principal challenge. A fish that has just been introduced to a bare, freshly set-up tank will find nothing to eat and will weaken and die within days. Success depends on maintaining a tank whose rocks are thoroughly colonised by biofilm and fine green algae before the fish arrives — a tank run for at least six to eight weeks under good light and with moderate nutrients. Once biofilm is established, it can be supplemented with blanched greens (zucchini, spinach, cucumber), algae wafers and spirulina-based sinking foods, plus the occasional small frozen food. Flake at the surface is not appropriate and will largely be ignored.
Mating
Stiphodon martenstyni follows the amphidromous Sicydiinae breeding pattern, in which adults mate and spawn entirely in fresh water. Males are territorial and defend a patch of bedrock or a suitable smooth stone surface, which also serves as the egg-deposition site. Courtship involves display of the male's colour and erect fins toward the female, with the male leading a ripe female to the chosen rock surface to spawn.
Because the entire adult phase is freshwater and the spawning act is contained within the stream, pair formation can theoretically occur in captivity. However, what follows spawning makes true captive breeding all but impossible.
Breeding
Spawning produces a clutch of small, adhesive eggs attached to the underside or a sheltered face of the chosen rock. The male remains with the eggs, guarding and fanning them until they hatch. The larvae, however, are not the self-sufficient young of a resident cave-spawner: they are tiny, unformed hatchlings that must immediately enter flowing water to be carried downstream to the sea. In the sea, they spend weeks to months as marine plankton, feeding and growing as pelagic post-larvae before metamorphosing and seeking a freshwater stream to ascend.
This makes Stiphodon martenstyni effectively impossible to breed in the home aquarium. Even if spawning occurs, the resulting larvae cannot be sustained in fresh water — they require a marine planktonic phase. The species in trade must therefore be sourced as wild-caught adults or sub-adults that have completed their marine phase and returned inland. Aquarists should not expect or attempt to raise larvae, and should regard any individuals purchased as irreplaceable wild fish to be kept with appropriate care.
In the aquarium
Stiphodon martenstyni is a specialist fish for the prepared keeper. It requires a mature, heavily biofilm-colonised aquarium with strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen, and clean water. A dedicated hillstream or high-flow setup is appropriate: smooth river pebbles and slate, a powerhead or wavemaker to simulate river current, and a tank that has been running for at least six to eight weeks to establish a biofilm culture on the rocks. Without that biological base, the fish starves.
Because all fish in trade are wild-caught, they may carry parasites or bacterial infections from collection and transport stress; a careful quarantine period in a mature tank with established algae is advisable. The tank must be securely covered — like most small gobies, Stiphodon are capable jumpers and will exit through any gap. Water temperature in the mid-twenties Celsius suits the species; pH should be neutral to mildly alkaline to reflect the clear, moderately hard stream water of its native range. Salt is not needed or appropriate.
Males can be territorial with each other in small spaces; the safest approach is a single male or a male–female pair in a dedicated species tank, or a larger biotope with multiple hiding zones. This is not a community fish for the generalist aquarist, and it is not a beginner species. Success is very achievable with preparation, but the biofilm requirement is non-negotiable.
Conservation
Stiphodon martenstyni is assessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, the highest threat category short of extinction in the wild. For years the species had no formal Red List assessment at all; the sparse published record and the narrow, imperfectly delineated range described above are consistent with a species now recognised to be under severe pressure.
The principal threats to rheophilic stream gobies across Southeast Asia are deforestation and sedimentation of clear-water streams, dam construction that blocks larval dispersal and adult migration routes, water extraction, and pollution. Amphidromous species are particularly vulnerable to physical barriers between the freshwater and marine environments: even a modest dam or weir that prevents ascending post-larvae from reaching adult habitat can locally extirpate a population — and for a species with as narrow and poorly surveyed a range as this one, such a loss could remove a large share of the entire known population. Because the species is wild-caught for any trade, collection pressure is an additional consideration, though demand for small specialist cling-gobies is limited. Aquarists should favour reputable suppliers who can demonstrate responsible wild-collection sourcing, and should recognise this as one of the more threatened fish covered in this atlas.
