Barboides gracilis was described by Brüning in 1929. The genus Barboides belongs to the family Cyprinidae and represents a small cluster of diminutive West and Central African barbs separated from the broadly defined Barbus by their extremely small adult size and slender body form. The genus name Barboides signals its affinity with barb-like cyprinids (Barbus + the Greek suffix -oides, meaning 'resembling'), while the species epithet gracilis is Latin for 'slender' or 'graceful', apt for the delicate body plan.

Barboides is a small, largely obscure African genus; the literature on it is sparse, and detailed revisionary work at the genus level remains limited. Barboides gracilis is among the smallest barbs known, with adults typically reaching no more than approximately 1 in in total length. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, semi-transparent, allowing the vertebral column and internal organs to be partially visible through the flanks in live fish — a feature common in the genus.

Habitat
Barboides gracilis is native to the rainforest river systems of West-Central Africa, principally in Cameroon, within the Lower Guinea ichthyofaunal zone — one of Africa's most diverse freshwater regions. This zone encompasses the rivers draining the Atlantic-facing slopes of the Cameroonian highlands and the adjacent coastal lowlands.
Like other miniature West African cyprinids, it likely occupies the quieter, well-shaded margins of small forest streams, backwaters, and standing pools where water movement is minimal and leaf litter, submerged roots, and aquatic vegetation provide structure and refuge. The water chemistry of such forest streams in the Lower Guinea region is typically soft and acidic to neutral, with low mineral content and temperatures broadly reflecting the humid tropical climate — approximately 72–79 °F. Detailed habitat survey data for the species are sparse.
Feeding
No specific dietary study of Barboides gracilis appears in the accessible literature. By analogy with closely related miniature African cyprinids and the constraints of its very small mouth, the species is presumed to be a micropredator and micro-omnivore, feeding on small invertebrates — zooplankton, aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans — along with organic detritus and possibly algal films.

Its extreme small size — comparable to or smaller than the smallest danionins and devarios kept by nano-aquarium enthusiasts — means that any aquarium keeping would require a dedicated nano-species tank with very gentle filtration, similarly tiny tankmates, and water quality reflecting its native soft, warm forest-stream environment.
