Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius aspilus was first described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1907, published in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History (vol. 20), under the original combination Barbus aspilus. The parenthetical authority — (Boulenger, 1907) — marks the subsequent transfer out of Barbus into the current genus.
The genus Enteromius was consolidated to accommodate a large and diverse assemblage of African small barbs following the landmark 2012 revision by Pethiyagoda and colleagues that dismantled the old catch-all genus Puntius. Enteromius encompasses the majority of small, four-barbelled African barbs formerly grouped under Barbus, and the species sits within the subfamily Smiliogastrinae of the family Cyprinidae. The epithet aspilus has no published etymology note in standard references; the name has been applied consistently since the original description.
Research on the taxonomy and internal relationships of Central African Enteromius remains active. A study on the taxonomy and relationships of African small barbs (Cyprinidae) has documented E. aspilus as a deep-bodied form within the lower Guinea ecoregion, occurring sympatrically with other Cameroon barbs including E. guirali, with which it sometimes schools.
Morphology
Enteromius aspilus is described as a deep-bodied barb, a form that sets it apart from the more slender members of the genus. The laterally compressed, high-backed body shape is consistent with the general Enteromius bauplan — small, shoaling cyprinids with a fusiform profile accentuated by the elevated dorsal region. Data on maximum recorded size are sparse for E. aspilus in accessible sources. Habitat
Enteromius aspilus is endemic to Cameroon, where it is recorded from the Sanaga, Nyong, and Dja river systems — all draining the lower Guinea ecoregion of Central Africa. These rivers flow through a landscape of lowland rainforest and derived savanna, with the Dja running through the Dja Faunal Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The rivers of this region are typically warm, often moderately soft to slightly acidic where they drain forested substrates, and well oxygenated in faster-flowing reaches.
The genus Enteromius as a whole occupies a broad range of African freshwater habitats — rivers, streams, floodplains, and reservoirs — and tends to favour clean, well-oxygenated water. Habitat-specific physical chemistry data (temperature, pH, hardness) for E. aspilus are not documented in accessible sources, but the lower Guinea forest rivers generally run warm (approximately 72–81 °F) with moderate to low mineral content. The species is noted to be sympatric with E. guirali in portions of its range.
Feeding

Mating
Like all barbs, Enteromius aspilus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No pair bond is formed, and no territory or nest is maintained beyond a brief courtship event. A conditioned male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in a short, active spawning event.
Specific spawning behaviour for E. aspilus has not been documented in the published literature. The pattern inferred from the broader genus is one of opportunistic, seasonal reproduction timed to riverine conditions — rising water levels and temperature shifts associated with the seasonal rains of the lower Guinea region likely cue reproductive activity, as observed in related West and Central African Enteromius.
Breeding
Enteromius aspilus has not been reported in captive breeding accounts in accessible hobby or scientific literature. As an egg-scatterer, breeding would be expected to follow the standard barb pattern: adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved vegetation, roots, or over the substrate, with no parental care and a high risk of egg predation by the adults themselves if not separated promptly.
In the wild, spawning is likely seasonal and tied to the hydrological cycle of the Cameroon river systems. Eggs would hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming and feeding on fine zooplankton and infusoria shortly after. Given the species' rarity in the trade, captive reproduction has not been documented and its husbandry requirements remain poorly understood.
In the aquarium
Enteromius aspilus is not an established aquarium species and is rarely, if ever, encountered in the ornamental fish trade. No detailed husbandry accounts are available from hobby sources. As a Central African forest-river barb, it would likely be best maintained in warm, soft to moderately hard, well-oxygenated water with a neutral to slightly acidic pH — conditions approximating its native Cameroon river habitat.
As a schooling species, groups of at least six or more individuals would be appropriate; solitary or small-group keeping of social barbs typically increases stress and aberrant behaviour. Should E. aspilus become available to specialist collectors or public aquaria, a planted tank with subdued lighting and a gentle current would suit its forest-river origins. At present, it remains a scientifically documented but practically unstudied fish outside its native range.
Conservation
Enteromius aspilus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Its occurrence across multiple river catchments in Cameroon — the Sanaga, Nyong, and Dja — gives it a broad enough distribution within the lower Guinea ecoregion that no range-wide population decline has been identified. The lower Guinea ecoregion of Central Africa is under increasing pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion, and infrastructure development.
