Enteromius chlorotaenia is a small African barb described by George Albert Boulenger in 1911, native to river systems in Central or West Africa. The species epithet — from the Greek chloros (green) and taenia (stripe or band) — points to a pale greenish lateral stripe that sets it apart within the genus Enteromius, a large and diverse assemblage of small African cyprinids that was once lumped into the broad catch-all genus Puntius. Like all barbs, E. chlorotaenia is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner; it has not been formally assessed by the IUCN, a situation common among small, rarely collected African endemics.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius chlorotaenia was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1911. Boulenger placed a great many African small barbs in the genus Barbus, and the species was subsequently moved through various combinations — including the once-widespread Puntius — before settling under Enteromius following the broader reorganisation of African cyprinids in the early twenty-first century. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Enteromius chlorotaenia (Boulenger, 1911) as the valid combination; the parenthetical authority marks the shift out of Boulenger's original genus placement.

Enteromius is one of the largest genera of sub-Saharan freshwater fishes, encompassing well over 100 species of small to medium-sized barbs distributed across rivers, streams, and floodplains from West Africa to the East African rift. Many species in the genus are superficially similar — slender to moderately deep-bodied cyprinids with lateral spots, stripes, or a combination of both — and the taxonomy of several species complexes remains incompletely resolved. E. chlorotaenia is distinguished by its greenish lateral banding, which gave rise to its epithet.

Morphology

Enteromius chlorotaenia is a small barb, estimated at roughly 1.5–2.5 in in standard length based on the typical size range of closely related Enteromius species from Central and West Africa. Like most members of the genus it has a moderately slender, fusiform body with the typical cyprinid profile: a slightly arched back, a rounded snout, and small terminal mouth. Two pairs of barbels are reported for many Enteromius species, though barbel count is a taxonomically variable character within the genus.

The species name references a greenish lateral stripe — chloros (green) and taenia (stripe) — which runs along the mid-flank and is the defining external character noted at the time of description. The ground colour is likely a pale silver or straw-yellow, as is common in sympatric Enteromius, with the stripe providing the principal contrast. Detailed meristic and mensural data from the original description have not been restated in accessible secondary literature.

Habitat

Enteromius chlorotaenia is an African river barb, likely inhabiting the streams, forest-edge rivers, and savanna waterways of Central or West Africa — the region indicated by the type locality data associated with Boulenger's 1911 collecting series, which drew heavily from Cameroon and adjacent basins in the Congo drainage periphery. African Enteromius occupy a wide spectrum of freshwater habitats, from soft, slow forest streams to faster, harder savanna rivers, and water chemistry can vary considerably across a species' range.

Small barbs in this group typically prefer shallow, well-oxygenated sections of streams and river margins, sheltering among aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, and leaf litter. They are benthopelagic in habit, spending most of their time in the lower water column and along the substrate. Seasonal variation in flow and water chemistry is characteristic of sub-Saharan river systems, and most Enteromius are adapted to tolerate fluctuating conditions tied to wet and dry cycles.

Feeding

Like the majority of small African barbs, Enteromius chlorotaenia is almost certainly omnivorous, taking a mix of small invertebrates, algae, and organic detritus from the substrate and water column. Closely related Enteromius species for which gut-content data exist feed primarily on diatoms, filamentous algae, detritus, and small aquatic insects and their larvae, with the balance shifting according to season and local food availability.

In an aquarium setting, small African barbs of this type accept standard prepared foods — quality flakes and small sinking pellets — supplemented with live and frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp. Vegetable matter in the diet helps maintain condition. E. chlorotaenia is rare in the trade, so aquarium feeding data specific to this species are limited.

Mating

Enteromius chlorotaenia follows the reproductive strategy universal among barbs: egg-scattering with no pair bond and no parental care. When a gravid female comes into condition, one or more males pursue her actively through vegetation or across the substrate in brief, energetic chases. At the peak of the drive, the fish press together and simultaneously release eggs and milt in small batches.

No territory is established and no nest is constructed. The adhesive eggs settle among plants, on fine gravel, or in leaf litter, where they are left entirely to chance — adults do not guard or tend them, and given the opportunity will consume their own eggs. This scatter-and-abandon approach is the ancestral cyprinid strategy and is consistent across the entire genus.

Breeding

In the wild, spawning in African river barbs like E. chlorotaenia is likely tied to seasonal cues — rising water levels, warming temperatures, and improved food availability at the onset of the rainy season — that signal optimal conditions for the next generation. Eggs are adhesive and small, scattering among fine-leaved vegetation, root masses, or the upper layer of substrate. No parental care is provided at any stage; the adults play no role in hatching or larval development.

Breeding in captivity has not been documented for this species in accessible hobbyist literature, reflecting its rarity in the trade. General principles for breeding small African Enteromius apply: a shallow, well-planted spawning vessel with soft, slightly acidic water, a mesh or fine-gravel base to protect the eggs from the adults, and separation of the spawners after egg deposition. Larvae typically become free-swimming within a few days of hatching and can be raised on fine live foods.

In the aquarium

Enteromius chlorotaenia is essentially unknown in the hobby. It does not appear in regular trade and is not documented in mainstream aquarium care guides. As a small Enteromius from Central or West Africa it would be expected to behave similarly to other small African barbs in the genus: an active, shoaling fish best kept in groups, undemanding in its feeding, and suitable for a community with similarly sized, peaceful tankmates.

Aquarium conditions reflecting its probable origin — clean, well-oxygenated water with a temperature in the mid-twenties Celsius, a broadly neutral to slightly acidic pH, and moderate hardness — would provide a reasonable starting point. Fine-leaved plants and some open swimming space suit the typical Enteromius profile. Any aquarium interest in the species would depend on wild collection, as captive-bred stock does not exist in commerce.

Conservation

Enteromius chlorotaenia has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List — a situation shared by many small, localised African barbs for which population data, precise range information, and threat-level quantification remain unavailable. The absence of an assessment does not imply the species is under no pressure; African freshwater fish diversity is routinely underrepresented in formal conservation inventories.

Central and West African river systems face increasing pressure from deforestation, agricultural runoff, small-scale artisanal mining, and the expansion of infrastructure into forested catchments. For a species with a potentially restricted range tied to a specific basin or drainage system, habitat degradation of this kind poses a real, if currently unquantified, risk. Greater survey effort in the rivers of Cameroon and adjacent basins would help clarify the species' true distribution and abundance before its status can be formally assessed.
