Taxonomy & naming
Anablepsoides peruanus was first described by C. Tate Regan in 1903 under the original combination Rivulus peruanus, with type material from Peru. The authority is therefore presented in parentheses — (Regan, 1903) — to indicate that the species has since been moved to a different genus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes confirms Regan (1903) as the valid original authority and Anablepsoides peruanus as the current accepted name.
The genus Anablepsoides was resurrected to accommodate a suite of South American rivulines previously lumped broadly within Rivulus. Anablepsoides species are distinguished from the nominal Rivulus group by a combination of morphological and molecular characters, and the arrangement is followed by FishBase and the current ichthyological literature. The species was reported in older aquarium literature — including the works of Hoedeman and references compiled in Axelrod's Atlas — under the synonym Rivulus peruanus, a name that may still appear in trade documentation and historical hobby sources.
Morphology
Anablepsoides peruanus is a slender, laterally compressed killifish with the streamlined body plan characteristic of the genus. FishBase records a maximum total length of 2 in, making it a small species within Anablepsoides. The caudal fin is rounded, the dorsal fin is set well back on the body above or behind the anal fin — an arrangement typical of rivulines — and the mouth is small and upturned, suited to surface or near-surface feeding.
As with most rivuline killifish, males are more vividly marked than females, typically carrying iridescent blue-green or greenish flanks with red or orange spotting and bar patterns arranged in longitudinal rows; the precise pattern varies by population and condition. Females are plainer and brownish overall, with a small dark ocellus (the rivuline spot) on the upper base of the caudal fin — a characteristic shared across many Rivulidae — that may serve as a false eye to deter predators or confuse conspecifics.
Habitat
The species is native to the Amazon River basin of Peru, where it inhabits lowland forest streams and pools with the soft, acidic, humus-stained water characteristic of Amazonian blackwater systems. Biotope documentation of the Rio Ampiyacu drainage — a tributary of the Amazon flowing through Loreto Department in north-eastern Peru — records Anablepsoides peruanus in habitats with low conductivity, high tannin content, and minimal water movement, often near banks where overhanging riparian vegetation and submerged leaf litter accumulate.
Sympatric species documented in comparable Ampiyacu-basin biotopes include the banded knifefish Gymnotus carapo and the glass knifefish Eigenmannia virescens, indicating a community structure typical of slowly flowing or still Amazonian forest habitats. FishBase lists the species as tropical freshwater with a preferred temperature range of 72–79 °F, benthic in behaviour, occurring at low altitude in the Peruvian Amazon lowlands.
Feeding
Like other small rivulines of the South American lowlands, Anablepsoides peruanus is an opportunistic micro-predator. Its upturned mouth and position in the water column suggest a preference for surface and mid-water prey: small invertebrates, aquatic insect larvae, zooplankton, and emerging insects trapped in the surface film are the likely dietary staples in the wild.
In captivity the species accepts live and frozen small invertebrates readily — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, chironomid larvae (bloodworm), and Tubifex — and can be trained to accept high-quality micro-granules or flake foods, though live and frozen foods produce better condition and colour. As a small fish with a correspondingly small gape, food size matters: prey items should not exceed approximately a third of the fish's head width.
Mating
Anablepsoides peruanus is a non-annual killifish that reproduces continuously in permanent or near-permanent water bodies rather than in temporary pools subject to seasonal drying. Its reproductive mode is that of a plant-spawner: paired fish approach submerged or floating fine-leaved vegetation, moss, or hanging roots, where the male courts the female with lateral displays, spreading his finnage to present the full iridescent pattern of his flanks.
When the female is receptive, the pair press together and release a small number of adhesive eggs — typically one to several per mating bout — that adhere to plant surfaces or spawning media. This scatter-and-spawn behaviour is repeated over days or weeks, producing a steady trickle of eggs rather than a single large clutch. There is no parental investment beyond the spawning act; the eggs develop unattended, supported by the oxygen-rich water that surrounds them, and incubate in water without any requirement for a dry diapause period.
Breeding
Eggs of Anablepsoides peruanus are small, adhesive, and spherical, attached singly to plant leaves, moss clumps, or synthetic spawning mops suspended in the water column. Incubation under aquarium conditions — at temperatures of 72–79 °F and acidic, soft water replicating the blackwater conditions of the native habitat — typically takes two to three weeks, a duration in line with other non-annual rivulines of comparable size.
Hatchlings are small but relatively well developed compared with the larvae of egg-burying annuals; they become free-swimming quickly and can take freshly hatched Artemia nauplii or micro-worms as first foods within days of hatching. Because adults in a community setting will consume eggs and fry, spawning mops or moss bunches are best removed to a separate rearing vessel once eggs are visible. The species is comparatively long-lived for a killifish, with a natural lifespan likely extending to two or three years under good aquarium management — a reflection of its origin in stable, permanent water.
In the aquarium
Anablepsoides peruanus is infrequently encountered in the hobby relative to better-known South American rivulines, partly because it lacks the bright coloration of some congeners and partly because it has not been widely distributed through specialist killifish clubs. It is nevertheless a manageable species for intermediate-level killifish keepers willing to provide appropriate water conditions.
A small, well-filtered aquarium of 10–15 US gal with a dark substrate, floating or fine-leaved plants, a layer of floating cover, and a secure lid suits a pair or small group. Water should be soft (low conductivity), acidic (pH 5.5–7.0), and held between 22 and 79 °F; the species is sensitive to hard or alkaline water and to ammonia accumulation. It is peaceable toward fish too large to eat, but may harass smaller or longer-finned companions. Males may quarrel over territory in confined spaces, so one male with one or two females is the standard arrangement. Regular partial water changes and stable chemistry are more important than elaborate decoration; a spawning mop of dark wool or java moss for egg deposition completes the setup. FishBase notes the species is reported to be difficult to maintain, suggesting a degree of sensitivity to water quality that rewards attentive husbandry.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Anablepsoides peruanus as Data Deficient (DD) in April 2014, a status that indicates the absence of sufficient data to determine conservation risk rather than an absence of concern. The species is known from the Peruvian Amazon, a region that has experienced ongoing pressure from deforestation and forest degradation for agriculture, logging, and infrastructure development; lowland blackwater stream habitats of the type the species occupies are vulnerable to siltation and organic-pollution events linked to land-use change.
The Peruvian Amazon supports high fish diversity and endemism, and many small-bodied species confined to specific drainage basins or habitat types go unmonitored for extended periods between formal assessments. A future resurvey with modern environmental DNA tools or targeted netting in the Ampiyacu basin and adjacent systems could clarify whether A. peruanus is locally common, restricted to one or two populations, or has contracted in range since its original description. Until that data exists, the DD listing is the responsible position, and the species warrants inclusion in any regional freshwater biodiversity assessment for lowland Peru.
