Taxonomy & naming

Anablepsoides elongatus was described by William Louis Fink in 1971, with the type locality in the Amazon basin of Peru. The parentheses around the authority (Fink, 1971) indicate that the species has been transferred from its original genus since its description. For decades it was accommodated in Rivulus, the broad catch-all genus historically used for Neotropical rivulines, and it subsequently passed through Cynodonichthys — the name still employed by some databases. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the current valid combination as Anablepsoides elongatus (Fink, 1971), placing it in the family Rivulidae.

The genus Anablepsoides was resurrected to group a coherent assemblage of non-annual rivulines distributed across tropical South America and extending into Central America and the Lesser Antilles. The genus name alludes to a superficial resemblance in eye shape to Anableps, the four-eyed fish. Within the genus, A. elongatus is one of the species for which aquarium and field data remain limited, and it seldom appears in the hobbyist literature. FishBase records it under species ID 49750 and confirms the Peruvian Amazon distribution.

The specific epithet elongatus is Latin for 'elongated', referring to the notably slender, attenuate body form that distinguishes this species within the genus — a characteristic that likely gave taxonomists an immediate impression when the type specimens were examined.

A spawning vessel need not be large — a 5.5–10 US gal tank with mature, soft, slightly acidic water, a spawning mop or clump of Java moss, and subdued lighting is adequate. The pair is introduced, allowed to spawn for several days, and then removed; alternatively, eggs are collected daily from the mop and moved to a shallow hatching tray.

Eggs of non-annual rivulines incubate in water, typically hatching in ten to fifteen days at around 75 °F.
