Anablepsoides intermittens is a small, non-annual killifish described by Poeser in 1998 from the Rio Negro drainage of Amazonas state, Brazil, where it occupies permanent forest streams filtered through white-sand and laterite substrates. A member of the extensive South American rivuline radiation that was long accommodated under the genus Rivulus, it was reassigned to Anablepsoides following molecular phylogenetic revision of the family Rivulidae. It is a plant or mop spawner with adhesive eggs, living out its life in the soft, acidic waters typical of the upper Amazonian basin, and has not yet been formally assessed by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Anablepsoides intermittens was described by Frederik N. Poeser in 1998, with type material drawn from the Rio Negro basin in Amazonas state, Brazil. Poeser originally placed the species in the genus Rivulus, the catch-all genus that for much of the twentieth century contained nearly all South American non-annual rivulines. A subsequent molecular and morphological reanalysis of the family Rivulidae demonstrated that Rivulus sensu lato was polyphyletic, prompting the erection and resurrection of several genera to replace it; the valid combination Anablepsoides intermittens (Poeser, 1998) follows that revision, with the authority in parentheses indicating the original generic assignment was different.

Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the species in the family Rivulidae within the order Cyprinodontiformes. The genus name Anablepsoides alludes to a structural resemblance of the eye in certain members to the quadrupedal eye of the four-eyed fish Anableps; the suffix -oides (Greek: resembling) completes the compound. The specific epithet intermittens is Latin for 'intermittent' or 'interrupted', most likely referring to a patterning feature — the interrupted lateral-line series or the broken banding of the flank — that distinguished the species from congeners known to Poeser at the time of description.

Morphology

Anablepsoides intermittens is a slender rivuline reaching approximately 1–1.5 in standard length, placing it among the smaller representatives of the genus. The body form is the typical elongate, laterally compressed profile shared by non-annual South American rivulines: a slightly upturned mouth suited to surface feeding, a dorsal fin set well back over the anal fin, and a rounded caudal fin. The lateral line is incomplete, composed of a series of embedded neuromasts rather than a continuous canal system.

Sexual dimorphism follows the Anablepsoides pattern: males are the more vividly coloured sex, displaying metallic iridescence on the flanks — the exact colour arrangement of blues, greens, and reddish spotting in A. intermittens has not been extensively documented in the hobbyist literature — while females are drabber, typically brownish, and may carry a dark ocellus at the dorsal base of the caudal fin, a characteristic trait of female rivulines across the genus.

Habitat

The species is native to permanent forest streams of the Rio Negro basin in Amazonas state, Brazil — one of the world's great blackwater river systems, draining vast expanses of white-sand forest (campina and campinarana) and terra firme rainforest across the northwest of the Amazon basin. Streams in this system run darkly stained by dissolved humic and fulvic acids leached from decaying organic matter, are extremely nutrient-poor, and support very low conductivity.

Water conditions recorded from the FishBase summary reflect this blackwater origin: pH 5.5–6.5, hardness 1–4 dGH, and temperatures of 75–82 °F. These are among the softest and most acidic freshwater habitats in the world, and the species is adapted to conditions that would be lethal or at minimum highly stressful to most freshwater fish. The permanent nature of the streams — unlike the seasonal pools and savannah pools occupied by annual killifish — is consistent with the non-annual life history of A. intermittens, which does not produce diapausing eggs.

Feeding

In its natural habitat Anablepsoides intermittens feeds as a generalised small-prey carnivore, taking insects and other small invertebrates from the water surface and the upper water column. The blackwater forest streams of the Rio Negro support a low-density but diverse invertebrate fauna, including small chironomid larvae, terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface, microcrustaceans, and zooplankton. The upturned mouth of A. intermittens is well suited to intercepting prey at or just below the surface film.

In captivity the species accepts a range of small live and frozen foods appropriate to its size. Drosophila melanogaster, baby brine shrimp (freshly hatched Artemia nauplii), small Daphnia, and frozen cyclops are all suitable. Care should be taken not to overfeed — the soft-water blackwater species tend to be sensitive to accumulation of organic waste, and water quality is more important than feeding volume.

Mating

Anablepsoides intermittens is a non-annual killifish. It inhabits permanent water and does not produce eggs with an obligate diapause phase; it is a plant or mop spawner, not a peat-burying annual. Pairs deposit individual adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, Java moss, rootlets, or the fibres of floating spawning mops over a period of days or weeks, with no concentrated mass-spawning event. Each egg is attached individually and left without parental care.

Male courtship involves lateral display, spreading and fanning the fins to present the full extent of their iridescent colouration. The brief spawning act is followed by immediate departure; unlike bubble-nesting anabantoids or mouthbrooding cichlids, the rivulines invest nothing in egg or fry guarding. The daily egg output is modest — a few eggs per day sustained across a long period is the characteristic pattern of the non-annual rivulines — yielding a slow but continuous supply of eggs in a well-managed breeding setup.

Breeding

Eggs of Anablepsoides intermittens incubate in water at ambient temperature with no requirement for damp-peat storage or a dry phase. At the species' preferred range of 75–79 °F, incubation in non-annual South American rivulines typically runs 10–14 days. Fry are free-swimming immediately on hatching and are usually large enough to accept freshly hatched Artemia nauplii as a first food without the intermediate stage of infusoria or green water that the smallest fry of some species require.

A practical approach is to float one or more dark-coloured spawning mops in the breeding tank and remove them every few days to a small hatching container with soft, acidic water matched to the parent tank (pH 5.5–6.5, temperature 77–79 °F). Because the eggs carry no diapause and develop continuously in water, maintaining consistent soft-water conditions in the hatching container is more critical than in annual killifish breeding, where a dry storage phase resets the egg biology. Growth of fry is moderate and the species is comparatively long-lived for a killifish — several years under good captive care.

In the aquarium

Anablepsoides intermittens is best kept in a dedicated species or genus setup rather than a community tank. A small, tightly covered aquarium of 10–15 US gal, soft and acidic (pH 5.5–6.5, hardness under 5 dGH, temperature 75–81 °F), and heavily planted with fine-leaved plants and floating vegetation reproduces the blackwater forest stream environment. A tight-fitting lid is mandatory: killifish are accomplished jumpers, and gaps in the cover will result in loss.

Filtration should produce gentle flow — the still to slow-moving blackwater streams of the Rio Negro are not turbulent environments — but regular partial water changes with appropriately soft, acidic replacement water are important for maintaining the low conductivity and pH that this species requires. Peat filtration or the use of RO water softened with blackwater extract is recommended if tap water is hard or alkaline. Indian almond leaves and alder cones both release tannins and humic compounds that approximate the natural water chemistry and have a mild antimicrobial effect that benefits fish from acid blackwater habitats.

The species is rarely encountered in the commercial ornamental trade and is primarily maintained by specialist killifish enthusiasts through hobbyist networks such as the American Killifish Association. Its small size, soft-water requirements, and relatively obscure profile make it a fish for the dedicated rivuline keeper rather than the general aquarist, but for those equipped to manage its water chemistry needs, it is an undemanding and rewarding subject.

Conservation

Anablepsoides intermittens has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it carries a status of Not Evaluated, reflecting the lag in assessment coverage for the many hundreds of small Neotropical freshwater fish species described in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The absence of an IUCN assessment should not be read as ecological security.

The species is known from the Rio Negro basin in Amazonas state, a region that retains large areas of intact forest but is not entirely immune to the pressures affecting the broader Amazon: deforestation driven by cattle ranching, soy agriculture, and illegal logging has fragmented riparian corridors across parts of the basin, and artisanal gold mining introduces mercury contamination into river systems in northwestern Amazonia. The forest streams occupied by A. intermittens are also dependent on intact catchment vegetation for the supply of organic matter that drives the blackwater chemistry to which the species is adapted; disruption of canopy cover could alter stream chemistry significantly. A formal IUCN evaluation with range mapping and population trend data would be valuable for this and the many other understudied blackwater rivulines of the Rio Negro.
