Taxonomy & naming
Anablepsoides speciosus was described by Jean-François Fels and Patrick de Rham in 1981, based on specimens collected near Quisto Cocha, Loreto department, Peru, at approximately 3°56'S, 72°24'W and around 328 ft elevation. The original description appeared in the Revue française d'Aquariologie et Herpétologie (vol. 8, no. 3, pp. 65–66) under the combination Rivulus speciosus — the genus Rivulus was, at that time, the catch-all for New World rivulines. The authority is therefore rendered in parentheses in the current combination to indicate that the species has been transferred since its description.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) places the species in Anablepsoides Huber, 1992, a genus erected to accommodate a clade of South American rivulines formerly lumped in Rivulus. The synonym Rivulus speciosus Fels & de Rham, 1981, remains on record. The species has also been reported from Jenaro Herrera and from further localities near Quisto Cocha documented by Sven Kullander during surveys in 1981, though the current IUCN assessment treats the known population as a single location unit.
The species belongs to the South American rivuline lineage within Rivulidae, a family of New World killifishes distributed across tropical and subtropical South and Central America. Anablepsoides contains a number of small, brilliantly coloured species restricted to the western Amazon basin and Guiana region.
Morphology
Anablepsoides speciosus is a small fish, reaching a maximum recorded total length of 1.5 in (FishBase), making it one of the more diminutive members of its genus. The body is slender and cylindrical, typical of rivuline killifishes, with a slightly flattened dorsal profile. Meristic data from the original description include a dorsal fin of 6 rays, an anal fin of approximately 11 rays, and a lateral-line scale count of around 33 — proportions consistent with the genus.
The colouration of males is the feature that prompted the specific name: the flanks carry a pattern of brilliant red and green, rendered in a mosaic or reticulate arrangement that is vivid even by killifish standards. The fins are typically ornamented as well, with males showing more intense pigmentation than females. Females are more cryptic, displaying subdued coloration as is typical across the rivuline group. Eggs are notably large relative to body size, measuring approximately 0.5 in in diameter and amber-coloured — a trait noted by Frans Vermeulen in his care observations of the species.
Habitat
The known range of Anablepsoides speciosus is confined to the Peruvian Amazon lowlands near Iquitos, Loreto department, in the upper Amazon basin. The type locality, Quisto Cocha, is a small pond or oxbow system set within seasonally inundated várzea and terra firme transitional forest along the Iquitos–Nauta road corridor. The IUCN assessment classifies the habitat as inland wetlands — specifically small, temporary or near-temporary ponds fed by small streams that may become very shallow or partially dry during the dry season.
Despite the seasonal nature of its pools, the species is classified as non-annual: it does not bury diapausing eggs in the substrate to survive pool desiccation as true annual killifishes do, but instead is thought to persist in residual pools or recolonise from connected water bodies as conditions allow. Water in these lowland Amazonian ponds tends toward soft, slightly acidic to neutral conditions typical of the region, and the hobbyist literature recommends rainwater or similarly soft water for aquarium maintenance of the species.
The area of occupancy is assessed at just 6 mi², and no populations are known to fall within protected areas. The road corridor setting makes the habitat especially vulnerable to incremental human disturbance.
Feeding
Anablepsoides speciosus feeds primarily on aquatic invertebrates in the wild, as recorded in the IUCN assessment. This is consistent with the general diet of small South American rivulines, which typically take microcrustaceans, insect larvae, small worms, and other invertebrates living in shallow, plant-rich water.
In aquarium conditions, Frans Vermeulen's observations indicate the fish feeds readily on appropriately sized live and frozen invertebrate prey. Fry require infusoria or comparable first foods immediately after hatching, graduating to Artemia nauplii after approximately two weeks — a reflection of the relatively large egg size and correspondingly large, but still very small, hatchlings. Adults in good condition can produce three to five eggs per day, suggesting ongoing nutritional demands on the female that benefit from a varied, protein-rich diet.
Mating
Anablepsoides speciosus is a non-annual killifish and a plant or mop spawner. Unlike the seasonal annuals that pack their entire reproductive effort into a brief wet season and leave the next generation buried in diapause eggs, this species spawns continuously throughout adult life, depositing a small number of eggs daily among floating plants, roots, or spawning mops near the water surface or substrate. Each egg, at 0.5 in, is large for a fish of this size — a trait that correlates with a longer incubation period and larger, more developed hatchlings than those of annual species.
Courting males display their brilliant red-and-green patterning to females, and spawning pairs position themselves among fine-leaved vegetation or floating plant material where individual eggs are deposited and fertilised. There is no nest construction, bubble-nest, or extended mate-guarding: egg placement is the entirety of parental investment. Males may become aggressive toward one another, particularly if individuals that have been separated are reintroduced — an important consideration in aquarium management.
Breeding
In captivity, Anablepsoides speciosus spawns across an extended period provided conditions remain stable, producing three to five eggs per day in well-fed pairs. The eggs are amber-coloured, adhesive, and large relative to the female's body size. They can be collected from spawning mops or fine-leaved plants and incubated separately in small containers with a mild antifungal agent such as acriflavine; Frans Vermeulen notes that eggs remain viable for approximately 14 days when stored this way, giving the keeper flexibility in managing batches.
Hatching produces fry that require infusoria or very fine commercial fry powder as first food; after approximately two weeks they are large enough to accept freshly hatched Artemia nauplii. Growth is gradual relative to annual killifishes: sexual maturity is reached at five to seven months, and captive lifespan is two to three years. The combination of small adult size, continuous egg production, and extended maturation means pairs should be maintained long-term rather than managed as short-season breeders. Floating riccia, peat moss substrate or dark gravel, and regular water changes with soft water best replicate natural conditions and support consistent spawning.
In the aquarium
Anablepsoides speciosus is rated as very difficult to maintain — a designation it earns through sensitivity to water quality rather than aggression or specialist dietary needs. FishBase flags it as challenging, and Vermeulen's observations confirm that the species requires attentive husbandry: soft water (rainwater or equivalently demineralised water is recommended), regular partial water changes, and a stable, well-oxygenated environment without accumulated pollutants. Even small deviations in water quality can cause rapid deterioration in condition.
A small aquarium of 2.5 US gal or more is sufficient for a pair, heavily furnished with floating plants such as riccia, surface cover, and either peat substrate or dark fine gravel to reduce stress. A tight-fitting lid is essential — the species is an accomplished jumper and will exploit any gap. Males are not aggressive toward females but can be combative with one another; pairs or trios (one male, two females) work better than multiple males in a small tank. The small size and subdued behaviour make this species incompatible with any boisterous or predatory tankmate.
In the hobby, Anablepsoides speciosus has been collected and maintained by killifish specialists since soon after its discovery, but it has never become widely available. Its combination of extreme rarity in the wild, sensitivity in captivity, and Critically Endangered status means collection from wild sources is ethically problematic; captive-bred stock from specialist killifish societies is the appropriate source for any serious attempt at maintenance and propagation.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Anablepsoides speciosus as Critically Endangered (CR) under criterion B2ab(iii,v) in April 2014, with the assessment published in 2016. The designation rests on an area of occupancy of only 6 mi² at a single known location, combined with continuing decline in habitat quality and in the number of mature individuals. The assessors were Jorge Chuctaya and Hernán Ortega Torres of Peruvian ichthyology.
Two principal threat categories are documented. First, collection for the ornamental fish trade: the species' brilliant male colouration and locality near Iquitos — the principal hub of Amazonian ornamental fish export — makes it accessible to collectors, and harvest pressure on a population confined to 6 mi² is acute. Second, deforestation and cattle-raising in the Iquitos–Nauta road corridor cause erosion and sedimentation of the shallow pond habitats on which the species depends; as forest cover is removed and the watershed destabilised, the ponds fill with fine sediment, lose structural complexity, and become seasonally unsurvivable even for a non-annual species.
No portion of the known population falls within a formally protected area, removing the baseline legal shield that many range-restricted species rely on. The species' non-annual strategy, while more resilient than diapausing annual species in some respects, does not confer tolerance of severe habitat degradation: unlike a true annual that can survive pool desiccation in buried eggs, Anablepsoides speciosus requires at least some portion of its wetland network to persist through the dry season. Captive propagation within the specialist killifish community represents the most realistic near-term conservation measure, alongside any advocacy for habitat protection in the Quisto Cocha area.
