Capoeta saadii is a medium-sized cyprinid barb endemic to southern and central Iran, found in the river basins draining toward the Persian Gulf — principally the Mand, Dalaki, and the internally draining Kor basin in Fars Province. Growing to roughly 9 in standard length, it is a benthopelagic fish of slow to moderately flowing rivers over muddy and gravel substrates, with a light golden-yellowish or silvery-grey body that may be marked with occasional dark blotches. First described by Heckel in 1847, C. saadii has historically been confused with related congeners; it was confirmed as a distinct species from C. coadi, a close relative described in 2016 from the Karun River drainage. It holds Least Concern status on the IUCN Red List as of 2019, reflecting a currently stable population within its restricted Iranian range.

Taxonomy & naming

Capoeta saadii was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Johann Jakob Heckel in 1847, with the type locality given as a spring near Persepolis associated with the Pulwar River in the Kor basin of Fars Province, Iran. The species name honours the medieval Persian poet Saadi (Muslih al-Din Saadi Shirazi), whose shrine and literary legacy are closely tied to Shiraz, the nearest major city to the type locality — a culturally resonant naming choice reflecting Heckel's practice of honouring regional figures.

The genus Capoeta belongs to the family Cyprinidae and is distributed across Anatolia, the Caucasus, the Iranian plateau, and the broader Middle East — a distinctly western Palearctic assemblage of large-bodied, often herbivorous barbs. The genus Capoeta has long carried a complex synonym history, and C. saadii was for some time confused with related species across the Persian Gulf drainages. A 2016 study that described C. coadi from the Karun River clarified that the Karun drainage fauna differs from C. saadii, confirming the latter's restricted range to the Mand, Dalaki, and Kor basins. Nine species of Capoeta are now recognised in Iran alone. The valid combination Capoeta saadii (Heckel, 1847) is recognised by the Catalog of Fishes as the authority for valid names.

Morphology

Capoeta saadii reaches a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 9 in, a size consistent with the genus Capoeta broadly — notably larger than the small ornamental barbs familiar to aquarists. The body is moderately elongated and laterally compressed, with the robust, somewhat cylindrical build typical of riverine Capoeta.

Coloration is a light golden-yellowish to silvery-grey on the flanks, sometimes with occasional dark or black blotches irregularly distributed along the body. The genus name implies a horny rostral cap characteristic of many Capoeta — a hardened keratinous structure on the lower jaw used for scraping algae and biofilm from rocks and gravel, a morphological feature reflecting the group's predominantly herbivorous ecology. Sexual dimorphism in Capoeta species generally follows the cyprinid pattern of females being larger and deeper-bodied when gravid, though specific data for C. saadii in this regard are sparse in the available literature.

Habitat

Within Iran, Capoeta saadii occupies the Mand and Dalaki river basins, which drain westward to the Persian Gulf, as well as the internally draining Kor basin in Fars Province — a semi-arid catchment centred on Persepolis and Shiraz. FishBase characterises the species as benthopelagic, inhabiting slow to moderately flowing rivers with muddy bottoms and gravel substrates, a habitat profile typical of larger Capoeta across the Iranian plateau.

Water chemistry data from the broader Karun system (a congener's range to the north) gives a sense of regional conditions: the Beshar River — a Karun tributary — measured pH 8.5, water temperature around 74 °F, TDS 190.2 mg/L, conductivity 395 µS/cm, and dissolved oxygen of 9.89 mg/L. These figures reflect moderately hard, alkaline, and well-oxygenated conditions characteristic of Iranian plateau rivers. A related study on Capoeta alborzensis from fast northern streams recorded roughly 75 °F and pH 7.1 over gravel. For C. saadii in the warmer southern drainages, conditions are likely similar or somewhat warmer given the arid inland climate of Fars Province, with alkaline and moderately hard water over gravel and silt substrates.

Feeding

Capoeta saadii, like most members of the genus, is a predominantly herbivorous or omnivorous feeder. Diet studies on Capoeta species in Iran and adjacent regions consistently find phytoplankton and algae dominating gut contents — one study of a congener at Sanandaj dam found phytoplankton comprising 60.8% of the diet, with the remainder composed of zooplankton. The hardened rostral cap of Capoeta is an adaptation for scraping periphyton and biofilm from rock and gravel surfaces, a grazing mode common among the group.

In practice, the species feeds throughout the water column and along the benthos, taking algae, diatoms, plant detritus, and small invertebrates as available. This flexible herbivory-omnivory suits the seasonally variable rivers of the Iranian plateau, where primary production may shift with flow regime and temperature across the annual cycle.

Mating

Like all barbs, Capoeta saadii is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No parental care of any kind has been recorded in Capoeta, and the genus follows the standard cyprinid pattern in which spawning males pursue gravid females, stimulating egg and milt release without forming pair bonds or defending territory beyond transient courtship behaviour.

In large Iranian river barbs, spawning is generally seasonal, tied to water temperature and flow conditions — often occurring in spring or early summer as rivers rise or temperatures moderate following winter. Eggs are broadcast over gravel, rock, or other substrates, and no nest is built. Adults play no further role in egg or larval development after spawning.

Breeding

Specific captive breeding data for Capoeta saadii are not reported in the available literature. The species is not commonly maintained in the ornamental aquarium trade, and its relatively large adult size — up to roughly 9 in — makes typical hobbyist spawning setups impractical. What is established from the genus broadly is that Capoeta are seasonal broadcast spawners: eggs are scattered over gravel or rocky substrates in flowing water, fertilised externally, and then abandoned entirely by both parents.

The larvae are initially yolk-sac dependent before becoming free-swimming. In the wild, juveniles likely seek shelter among substrate interstices and marginal vegetation while growing rapidly over their first season. Captive reproduction, if attempted, would require large tanks replicating the alkaline, moderately hard Iranian plateau conditions of the native range, with cool-to-warm seasonal temperature shifts to condition the fish.

In the aquarium

Capoeta saadii is not an established aquarium species and is essentially absent from the ornamental trade. Its maximum size of roughly 9 in SL, combined with the specialised habitat conditions of the Iranian plateau (alkaline, moderately hard, well-oxygenated water over gravel and silt), means it falls well outside the profile of common aquarium barbs. It is a species encountered in ichthyological fieldwork and regional fisheries surveys rather than in hobbyist tanks.

For keepers with large, appropriately equipped systems who obtain specimens through specialist channels, the care requirements would centre on the species' natural conditions: moderately alkaline and hard water (consistent with Iranian plateau rivers), temperatures in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, strong filtration and flow to maintain oxygen levels, and a diet weighted toward algae, plant matter, and small invertebrates. Given the endemic and regionally restricted nature of this fish, wild collection for the aquarium trade would be inadvisable.

Conservation

Capoeta saadii is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated in September 2019. The species is endemic to southern Iran — specifically the Mand and Dalaki basins draining to the Persian Gulf and the internally draining Kor basin in Fars Province — and while its range is geographically restricted, the population was considered stable at the time of assessment with no evidence of major decline.

The rivers of the Iranian plateau face ongoing pressures common to arid-zone freshwater systems: water extraction for agriculture and urban use, dam construction altering flow regimes and barriers to seasonal movements, and pollution from agricultural runoff and urban wastewater. The Kor River system in particular is heavily modified by dams, irrigation diversions, and the demands of the city of Shiraz. Although these pressures are real, they had not triggered a population-level decline sufficient to change the LC designation as of 2019. Given the species' restricted endemic range, future reassessments will be important to track whether intensifying water use in this semi-arid region begins to affect the population.
