Carasobarbus saadatii is a large, deep-bodied barb described in October 2024 from the Karun River drainage in Khuzestan Province, south-western Iran. Known from the lower Karun drainage in the Persian Gulf basin and from the Great Zab in the Tigris drainage, this recently recognised species was named in honour of Mohamadali Saadati, the first Iranian ichthyologist to carry out systematic freshwater fish taxonomy studies in the country. It inhabits deeper river sections and reservoirs with slower currents, abundant aquatic vegetation and rocky substrates, and reaches a recorded standard length of nearly 7.5 in. As a species described less than two years ago, it has not yet been assessed for the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Carasobarbus saadatii was formally described in October 2024 by Jouladeh-Roudbar, Kaya, Vatandoust and Ghanavi in a study that combined morphological characters with mitochondrial DNA sequence data (COI and cytochrome b). The description was published in Scientific Reports (Nature portfolio) and simultaneously treated in a broader phylogenetic reanalysis of the genus Carasobarbus published via PMC/NCBI. The species is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of 38–40 lateral line scales and a relatively short head length of 19–20 percent of head length, together with mitochondrial COI divergence values greater than 2 percent from all previously known Carasobarbus species.

The genus Carasobarbus (from the Arabic himris, a vernacular name for large barbs) belongs to the subfamily Torinae within the family Cyprinidae and encompasses large-bodied barbs distributed across western Asia, the Middle East and north-western Africa. The group occupies rivers and lakes with warm to temperate, neutral to alkaline, moderately hard water — a chemistry reflecting the semi-arid and Mediterranean basins these fishes inhabit.

As a species described in 2024, Carasobarbus saadatii does not appear in older literature and currently has no established vernacular name in English or Farsi.

Morphology

The holotype measured 7.5 in standard length (SL); paratypes ranged from 5–7 in SL, placing the known size of this species at roughly 4.5–7.5 in SL, consistent with the larger members of Carasobarbus. The body form is deep and moderately compressed, as typical of the genus.

Diagnostic scale counts of 38–40 scales along the lateral line separate C. saadatii from congeners, as does the proportionally short head (19–20% HL). Coloration and additional meristic data are not comprehensively detailed in available literature at the time of writing; full morphological characterisation follows the original description by Jouladeh-Roudbar et al. (2024). Sexual dimorphism has not been documented for this species.

Habitat

Carasobarbus saadatii is recorded from the lower Karun River drainage in Khuzestan Province, Iran (Persian Gulf basin), with the type locality at Gotvand (32.27°N, 48.84°E), and from the Great Zab in the Tigris drainage. The Karun is Iran's most water-rich river, draining the southern Zagros Mountains and flowing across the Khuzestan plain into the Persian Gulf; its lower reaches and associated reservoirs (including the Gotvand reservoir, one of the largest in Iran) provide the sluggish, deeper-water habitats this species apparently favours.

The original description notes a preference for deeper river sections and reservoirs with slower currents, abundant aquatic vegetation and rocky substrates — conditions markedly different from the fast, turbulent reaches that characterise many smaller torinine barbs. Water chemistry in these western Iranian drainages is generally neutral to slightly alkaline and moderately hard, reflecting the limestone and marl geology of the Zagros foothills.

Feeding

Specific feeding data for Carasobarbus saadatii have not been published. By analogy with other large Carasobarbus species, which are omnivores taking algae, aquatic plants, invertebrates and organic detritus in relation to their size and habitat, a similar broad diet is probable. The deep-bodied form and preference for vegetated, slower-current sections of the river are consistent with benthic and mid-water foraging across a range of food types.

Data on diet composition from gut-content analysis await future study of this newly described species.

Mating

No specific observations of courtship in Carasobarbus saadatii have been published. As with all cyprinid barbs, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Courtship in large riverine barbs typically involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female, with the pair releasing eggs and milt over coarse substrate, gravel or among aquatic vegetation.

Large-river Carasobarbus species in general undertake seasonal spawning movements tied to spring floods and rising water temperatures, gathering in shallower gravel reaches to broadcast eggs before retreating to deeper water. No pair bond is formed beyond the act of spawning.

Breeding

Carasobarbus saadatii is an egg-scattering, broadcast spawner with no parental care, following the reproductive pattern universal among cyprinid barbs. Eggs are scattered over the substrate — likely gravel or rocky bottom and among aquatic vegetation in the shallows — and left to develop without guarding. Adults eat their own eggs if they encounter them.

No captive-breeding accounts exist for this species. Given that it was described only in 2024 and reaches adult sizes of 4.5–7.5 in SL, it is not a fish that has entered the aquarium hobby or the attention of ornamental-fish breeders. Breeding biology details will require field study in its native Iranian drainages.

In the aquarium

Carasobarbus saadatii is not currently known in the aquarium hobby and is unlikely to be available in the trade. Adults exceed 6 in SL and inhabit large river systems; the species is not suited to typical home aquaria. Were specimens to become available, its requirements would mirror those of other large western Asian Carasobarbus: a very large, well-filtered aquarium with neutral to moderately alkaline, moderately hard water, strong filtration to handle the bioload of a large cyprinid, and a diet combining plant matter, aquatic invertebrates and prepared foods.

No husbandry data exist at this time.

Conservation

Carasobarbus saadatii was described in October 2024 and has not yet been assessed for the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE). The species is known from the lower Karun drainage in Khuzestan Province, Iran, and the Great Zab in the Tigris system — two drainages subject to significant hydrological modification. The Karun has been heavily dammed; the Gotvand Dam, whose reservoir is the type locality for this species, is one of the largest dams in Iran and has substantially altered flow regimes and water quality in the lower Karun.

Aquifer depletion, agricultural water extraction, pollution from oil-industry activities in Khuzestan, and reservoir construction all represent ongoing pressures on freshwater fish diversity in this region. Whether Carasobarbus saadatii has a restricted range making it particularly vulnerable, or whether it is more widespread across the Tigris–Karun system than currently documented, remains unknown pending survey work prompted by its recent description.
