Taxonomy & naming
Aphyosemion bivittatum was described by the Swedish zoologist Einar Lönnberg in 1895, and the authority is accordingly presented in parentheses to indicate the species has been moved from its original genus placement. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing reference for the valid combination Aphyosemion bivittatum (Lönnberg, 1895). The species has circulated in the literature and in trade under the synonym Chromaphyosemion bivittatum, reflecting a period when molecular and morphological work suggested this group of Atlantic-coast Aphyosemion warranted separation at genus level. Current treatment retains bivittatum within Aphyosemion sensu lato; hobbyists and older literature may use either name for the same fish.
The type locality is given as the Ndian River waterfall in southwestern Cameroon. The specific epithet bivittatum is Latin for 'two-banded', describing the pair of longitudinal dark stripes that run along the flanks of both sexes — a constant character across the species' range. The genus name Aphyosemion combines the Greek aphyo ('small fish') with semeion ('banner' or 'flag'), alluding to the ornate, flag-like finnage of the males.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 1.5–2 in standard length (FishBase records a maximum of 2 in SL; Seriously Fish gives 2 in SL), placing bivittatum firmly among the smaller members of the genus. The body is slender and laterally compressed, tapering to a caudal peduncle that in males may support extended, lyre-shaped or pointed fin tips — the 'lyretail' of the common name. Males are substantially more colourful than females: the body ground colour is typically an iridescent blue-green or turquoise overlaid with red or brick-red spots, blotches, or streaks, with the two defining dark stripes of the eponymous pattern running from behind the eye to the caudal region. Finnage is orange, red, and blue in varying proportions, with the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins often carrying coloured marginal bands.
Females are considerably plainer — brownish or olive in ground colour, with the two lateral stripes visible but without the iridescent overlay or coloured finnage of males. This strong sexual dichromatism is the rule in Aphyosemion and makes sexing straightforward even in juveniles once colour begins to develop. The overall build is robust for a fish of this size, consistent with a benthic and mid-water lifestyle in flowing or slowly flowing forest streams.
Habitat
Aphyosemion bivittatum is restricted to the coastal lowland rainforest zone along the Cameroon–Nigeria border, with distribution centred on the coastal plains near the Cross River and Korup National Parks (Cameroon) and Cross River National Park (Nigeria). The type locality, the Ndian River waterfall area, lies within this block. The species inhabits small, shallow forest brooks and stream margins, typically in water no deeper than about 12 in, with dense overhanging or submerged vegetation, fallen branches, and accumulations of decaying leaf matter providing cover at the bottom and along the banks.
A distinctive feature of this species' ecology, noted in the FishBase summary, is its association with streams running over calcium-containing (calcareous) soils — an unusual preference within a genus that predominantly favours soft, acidic blackwater. Water chemistry data from published sources records a pH of approximately 5.5–6.0, a temperature around 73 °F, and very soft to soft conditions (1–3.5 dH). The combination of modest acidity, cool temperature, and physical clarity (these are not blackwater swamps but shaded forest brooks) reflects the particular hydrological character of the Cameroonian coastal escarpment.
This species is NOT a seasonal or temporary-pool inhabitant. The streams it occupies persist year-round, and bivittatum does not undergo the egg diapause associated with annual killies. It is a permanent-water species tied to the integrity of intact lowland forest in one of West Africa's most biologically rich but also most threatened landscapes.
Feeding
In the wild Aphyosemion bivittatum is an opportunistic omnivore, as documented by FishBase. The diet in natural habitat is composed of small invertebrates encountered at or near the water surface and in the water column — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and other invertebrate prey — with some plant material and detritus ingested incidentally. The species forages actively, using the relatively good eyesight common to small killies and the advantage of operating in clear, shallow water.
In the aquarium the fish accepts a wide range of prepared and live foods. Small live or frozen foods — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, bloodworm, and Tubifex — are taken eagerly and support the best colouring in males. Small granular or micro-pellet prepared foods are also accepted, though as with many small killies, a diet heavy in live and frozen invertebrates produces noticeably better condition. Overfeeding is a common husbandry error with small species in small aquaria; modest, twice-daily feeding keeps water quality manageable.
Mating
Aphyosemion bivittatum is a non-annual killifish that reproduces by depositing adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, moss, roots, or fibrous spawning mops — a mode entirely unlike the soil-buried, diapausing eggs of annual species. Spawning is not a single seasonal event but a continuous, low-level process: a compatible pair will spawn intermittently day after day, scattering small numbers of eggs into vegetation near the substrate or in mid-water mops rather than releasing a mass clutch.
Male courtship is active and persistent. Males display to females with spread fins and colour intensification, positioning themselves alongside or below the female and nudging her toward spawning sites. The actual spawning embrace is brief — the male wraps alongside the female and fertilises each egg individually as it is deposited and pressed adhesively onto plant material or mop fibres. A male kept with a single female may harass her excessively; spawning groups with two or three females per male, or pairs separated with a rest period, reduce stress and improve egg production.
Breeding
Eggs are small — approximately 0.5 in in diameter — clear, and adhesive, clinging firmly to plant matter or mop fibres. Incubation occurs in water at the ambient temperature (around 73 °F), and the period from laying to hatching is approximately three weeks, as recorded by Fishipedia. Unlike annual killies, there is no diapause and no need for a peat-drying phase; the eggs simply develop at the water temperature and hatch when fully developed.
In a planted aquarium with willing adults, some fry may survive without intervention, hiding among fine vegetation. Dedicated breeders collect eggs regularly by inspecting spawning mops, transferring eggs individually to small containers with shallow water and a few drops of methylene blue to suppress fungal infection, and hatching them separately from the adults. Fry are small but manageable; newly hatched Artemia nauplii and micro-worms are appropriate first foods. Growth is steady in warm, clean water, and juveniles can be raised communally without significant cannibalism from conspecifics. The fish reach sexual maturity well within their first year and can live for two to three years in well-maintained aquaria — a substantially longer lifespan than annual killifish.
In the aquarium
Aphyosemion bivittatum is kept by specialist killifish enthusiasts and is available through killifish clubs and specialist importers, though it is not a mainstream aquarium species. It is rated as intermediate to advanced in difficulty (Aquadiction), primarily because of its requirement for stable, soft, slightly acidic water and its sensitivity to water-quality deterioration — nitrate should be kept below 50 mg/L with regular, modest water changes of 20–30% monthly rather than large infrequent changes that stress the fish.
The aquarium should be small (a 10–15 US gal species tank suits a pair or trio), tightly covered (killies are persistent jumpers), and well-planted with fine-leaved vegetation or furnished with dark Java moss and spawning mops. Lighting should be subdued; the fish comes from shaded forest streams and will display more freely in dimmer conditions. Water temperature around 73 °F suits the species; the FishBase recommendation records pH 6 and about 3.5 dH as representative parameters, though the range pH 5.5–6.5 is tolerated. The species should not be mixed with larger, aggressive species; it does well with other small, peaceful West African forest fish of similar water requirements, though a species-only setup is most practical for breeding.
The two-banded lyretail is not commonly encountered in the general trade but is maintained in the killifish hobby through club networks; the American Killifish Association and European killifish societies list it among their distributed species. Its relative hardiness compared to annual species (no peat, no diapause protocols) makes it a good entry point into West African Aphyosemion for aquarists transitioning from mainstream community fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Aphyosemion bivittatum as Least Concern, with the assessment dated 5 September 2019 and referenced against Red List Version 2025-2. The LC listing reflects the species' occurrence within large, protected forest blocks — principally Korup National Park in Cameroon and Cross River National Park in Nigeria — that provide substantial habitat security. Within these parks, stream habitats remain largely intact and the species presumably maintains stable populations.
Despite this, bivittatum's conservation situation warrants attention. Its range is genuinely restricted to a small slice of coastal forest between the Cameroon highlands and the Atlantic; it does not occur broadly across West Africa. The calcareous-soil stream habitat it requires is a specific subset of the available forest environment, further constraining the effective population area. The lowland forest of the Cameroon–Nigeria border region faces ongoing pressure from agricultural encroachment, artisanal logging, and oil palm expansion on its margins, even where national park boundaries provide formal protection. The species has no tolerance for seasonal drying and cannot survive in degraded or intermittent streams.
Collection for the aquarium trade has occurred but does not appear to constitute a significant threat at current levels, given the species' occurrence within protected areas. Monitoring of population trends within park boundaries and maintenance of forest connectivity between protected areas are the conservation measures most relevant to the species' long-term security.
