Aphyosemion pascheni was described by Ernst Ahl in 1928, and the authority is presented in parentheses because the name has been moved from its original generic placement since description. The valid combination Aphyosemion pascheni (Ahl, 1928) is recognised in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong), which is the authority for valid killifish names.
Within the genus Aphyosemion — a large West and Central African assemblage of non-annual killies in the family Nothobranchiidae — A. pascheni is classified in the A. pascheni species group. A subspecific form, Aphyosemion pascheni festivum, is recognised by hobbyists and the American Killifish Association and is associated with specific Cameroonian collection localities including Nyete, Mougue, and the Nkolbenda HLM 99/23 site. Whether festivum warrants formal subspecific rank under the current Code is a matter that remains to be settled in a comprehensive revision of the pascheni group.
The type locality is the Lobe River in Cameroon — a coastal rainforest drainage in the South Region of the country — and all wild material in the hobby traces ultimately to Cameroonian populations. Morphology
Aphyosemion pascheni reaches approximately 2 in total length (Aqualog), placing it in the mid-range for non-annual Aphyosemion. The body is slender and laterally compressed in the typical killifish fashion, with the dorsal fin set well back, close to the caudal peduncle, and the caudal fin showing the rounded to pointed lyrate shape characteristic of the genus.
The species' common name — gray beauty killifish — alludes to a base colouration that is more subdued than many of its genus-mates: males carry a steel-grey to blue-grey ground colour overlain with red or brick-red spotting and patterning, particularly vivid on the flanks and fins. The caudal and dorsal fins typically show coloured margins. Females are more cryptically coloured and lack the ornate fin patterning of males, with a brownish, less iridescent body. Habitat

In captivity it takes live foods eagerly: brine shrimp nauplii and adults, daphnia, micro-worms, mosquito larvae, and small bloodworms are all accepted.
