The Monrovia panchax is a small, slender killifish from the coastal swamps and quiet brooks of Liberia and neighbouring West African lowlands, where it haunts shallow, tangled vegetation at or near the water surface. A non-annual species with a comparatively long lifespan for a killi, it deposits adhesive eggs on fine plant leaves and spawning mops over a protracted breeding season rather than burying eggs in mud as the seasonal annuals do. Long marketed in the aquarium hobby under the closely related name Epiplatys dageti monroviae — and still sold that way in much of the trade — it was formally reinstated as a full species by Arnoult and Daget in 1965 on the basis of its distinct colouration and type locality at Monrovia.

Taxonomy & naming

Epiplatys monroviae was described by Jean Arnoult and Jacques Daget in 1965, with the type locality recorded as Monrovia, Liberia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) treats the name as valid, placing it in the genus Epiplatys within the family Nothobranchiidae — the African killifishes. The genus Epiplatys is the largest of the West African panchax groups and is characterised by a dorsal fin set well back on the body, an upturned mouth suited to surface feeding, and non-annual biology in permanent or near-permanent water.

For much of the twentieth century the fish circulated in aquarium literature as Epiplatys dageti monroviae, a subspecies of the closely related fire-mouth panchax E. dageti. Killi-Data and the current Catalog of Fishes treatment separate monroviae at full species rank, partly on the basis of distribution (the two forms have largely non-overlapping ranges along the West African coast) and partly on differences in male colouration. The synonymy has generated some confusion in older hobbyist sources, and fish sold under either name should be compared against type-locality collection data where provenance matters.

The genus name Epiplatys combines the Greek epi (upon) and platys (flat, broad), a reference to the flattened dorsal profile and near-surface habit shared across the group. The specific epithet monroviae is a toponym, Latinised from Monrovia, the capital of Liberia and the type locality of the species.

Morphology

Epiplatys monroviae is a slender, pike-shaped killifish reaching a maximum standard length of approximately 1.5–2 in, though most aquarium adults fall in the 1.5 in range. Aquarium Glaser lists the trade size as 1.5–2 in total length, consistent with published data. The body is elongate and laterally somewhat compressed, tapering to a rounded caudal fin. The dorsal fin is set far back, roughly over the anal fin, giving the fish the characteristic forward-leaning silhouette of the Epiplatys genus. The mouth is strongly upturned, an adaptation for taking prey from the water surface.

Colouration is the distinguishing character. Males are olive-green to brownish-green on the back and upper flanks, shading to a silvery or yellowish-green below. The flanks carry a series of dark, transverse bars or dashes that become less distinct with age. Most striking is the throat and chin of the male, which develops a vivid red or orange-red flush in mature individuals — the feature that earned the fish the common name Red-chinned Panchax and distinguishes it most readily from closely related species. Females are plainer, lacking the red chin, with more diffuse barring and a rounded dorsal fin profile. The sexes are thus easily distinguished in adult fish, with males additionally showing a more pointed dorsal and anal fin.

Habitat

The native range of Epiplatys monroviae centres on Liberia, with records from around Monrovia, Harbel, and Robertsport, extending into adjacent parts of Côte d'Ivoire and possibly Ghana along the coastal lowlands. The species inhabits permanent or near-permanent shallow freshwater habitats: coastal swamps, sluggish forest streams, roadside ditches, and flooded marginal vegetation. It is a surface-oriented species, typically found in the upper water column among overhanging vegetation, fallen leaves, or floating plant matter where it hunts small invertebrates at or just below the surface film.

Water conditions in these coastal West African swamp habitats tend toward the soft and mildly acidic to neutral. Seriously Fish records the range as pH 5.0–7.0 with temperature 68–86 °F; FishBase gives pH 6.0–7.0, hardness 5–12 dH, and temperature 70–73 °F for closely related E. dageti. The habitats are generally shaded, with modest water movement or none. Unlike the ephemeral pools inhabited by annual killies, the swamps and forest streams colonised by E. monroviae persist year-round, removing the evolutionary pressure for drought-resistant diapausing eggs. The species may occasionally tolerate mildly brackish conditions in tidal-influenced coastal margins, consistent with observations on related Epiplatys in the region.

Feeding

Epiplatys monroviae is a micropredator feeding primarily on small invertebrates at and near the water surface. In nature the diet consists of insects and their larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and other invertebrates that fall onto or live in the surface film — prey items consistent with the strongly upturned mouth and surface-patrol behaviour of the species. Seriously Fish describes congener E. dageti as feeding on small invertebrates in the same manner, and the feeding ecology of monroviae is understood to be essentially identical.

In the aquarium the species accepts a wide range of appropriately sized live and frozen foods: Drosophila fruit flies, small crickets, mosquito larvae, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm, and Daphnia. Dry foods — micro-pellets and flake crushed small enough to be taken at the surface — are accepted by well-settled individuals, though a diet heavy in live and frozen invertebrates maintains the best colouration and condition. Feed small amounts two or three times daily; the small stomach capacity of a fish this size means heavy single feedings are less effective than regular, modest portions.

Mating

As a non-annual killifish, Epiplatys monroviae pairs in a prolonged, low-intensity courtship rather than the explosive rainy-season spawning of annual species. Males in peak condition display their vivid red-orange chin colouration to females, erecting fins and circling below or alongside a potential mate in a slow lateral display. Courtship is relatively gentle for a killifish; males may show some chasing and mild fin-nipping during competition, but serious aggression is less typical than in some of the more aggressive Aphyosemion or annual killifish genera.

Spawning is a plant-spawner mode: the pair move together into fine-leaved vegetation, plant roots, or a floating spawning mop, where the male curves alongside the female as one to three eggs are deposited and fertilised per embrace. This is repeated over many days or weeks in small daily batches rather than in a single concentrated event. The deposited eggs are adhesive, attaching to plant fibres or mop strands, and are left without parental attention. Both sexes remain in good breeding condition for extended periods, consistent with the species' comparatively long lifespan — Aquarium Glaser notes that it lives as long as livebearers such as guppies and mollies, a telling contrast with the months-long lifespan of annual killifishes.

Breeding

Breeding Epiplatys monroviae in captivity is straightforward by killifish standards and accessible to a hobbyist with modest experience. The standard approach is to place a conditioned pair or a small group (one male, two females) in a dedicated breeding tank of 10–15 US gal furnished with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or a clump of synthetic spawning mop floated at the surface. Water should be soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.0, temperature 72–79 °F. Live or frozen invertebrates fed generously to both sexes before and during the spawning period improve egg production and male colour.

Eggs are deposited individually on plant leaves or mop strands over days and weeks. Seriously Fish records an incubation period of approximately 11–14 days at 70 °F; at warmer temperatures development is faster. The eggs are small, clear, and adhesive; they can be picked from the mop by hand or the mop can be moved to a separate hatching container to protect fry from being eaten. Newly hatched fry are free-swimming almost immediately and small but not especially delicate — they accept Artemia nauplii and micro-worm from the first day, unlike the infusoria-dependent fry of some annual species. Regular small water changes in the fry container and good hygiene promote steady growth. The fish reach sexual maturity in a few months under optimal conditions.

In the aquarium

Epiplatys monroviae is well suited to small, dedicated killifish setups and makes an attractive display fish in a well-planted nano or species tank. A tank of 10–15 US gal with dense surface vegetation — floating plants such as water sprite or Indian fern, fine-leaved rooted plants — replicates the shadowed West African swamp environment and encourages natural behaviour. The fish spends most of its time in the upper water column, cruising just below the surface. A tight-fitting lid is essential; like most killies, it will jump through any gap.

Water parameters should be soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.0, temperature 72–79 °F, with gentle filtration providing flow without strong surface agitation. The species can be kept in a species tank or alongside other small, peaceful West African fish that occupy the lower water layers — small Phenacogrammus tetras or pygmy Synodontis can coexist without competing directly with the surface-hunting panchax. Avoid boisterous or fin-nipping tankmates. A single male can be kept with two or more females; multiple males may be housed in a spacious, well-planted tank but should be monitored for aggression.

Aquarium Glaser notes that the species has a lifespan comparable to that of guppies and mollies — considerably longer than annual killies — making it a lower-commitment option for hobbyists curious about the Epiplatys group. It remains a specialist fish rather than a mainstream community species, but its striking red chin, manageable size, and relatively easy breeding make it a rewarding choice for the planted nano tank or killifish collection.

Conservation

Epiplatys monroviae has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; the species carries a status of Not Evaluated. Its closest relative in the trade, Epiplatys dageti, was assessed as Least Concern in 2019, reflecting that species' relatively broad West African coastal distribution. The conservation situation for E. monroviae is less clear precisely because it is a narrowly distributed species centred on the Monrovia coastal region of Liberia — a country whose freshwater habitats have experienced substantial pressure from urbanisation, logging, artisanal mining, and agricultural expansion in recent decades.

The coastal swamps and forest streams that Epiplatys monroviae inhabits are among the most threatened freshwater habitats in West Africa. Forest clearance for subsistence agriculture and industrial logging reduces canopy cover and destabilises stream hydrology; urban expansion around Monrovia has degraded wetlands through filling, drainage, and pollution; and the introduction of exotic species — particularly mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), widely released for mosquito control across the region — poses a predation and competition threat to small surface-dwelling killies. The hobby's long-standing aquarium population, maintained through generations of breeding from original wild-caught stock, may constitute a meaningful backup for the species if wild populations decline.

Formal IUCN assessment of E. monroviae is warranted. Its apparent range restriction to the Liberian coastal lowlands, combined with documented habitat loss in the region, suggests the species may qualify for a threatened category under range-size and population-quality criteria once surveyed.
