Olbrecht's panchax is a moderately large West African killifish native to the tangled small rivers and swamp margins of Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia, where it hunts insects and small invertebrates at the water surface beneath a canopy of floating vegetation. A non-annual species tied to permanent or near-permanent forest streams, it differs fundamentally from the seasonal diapause killifish of open savannas — its eggs are adhesive, water-incubated, and hatch within two weeks without any dry rest. Though undemanding enough in captivity, it remains uncommon outside specialist killifish circles, and its IUCN status of Least Concern reflects a species whose coastal-forest range still retains some intact habitat but sits directly in the path of West Africa's continuing deforestation.

Taxonomy & naming

Epiplatys olbrechtsi was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1941 on the basis of material collected from the border zone between Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia, at the junction of the Maseni River with the Bon de Boan River, a tributary of the Noun River system. Poll placed it in the genus Epiplatys, the surface-hunting panchax killifish of West and Central Africa, where it has remained ever since. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the name as valid.

The species formerly embraced up to five described subspecies — olbrechtsi, azureus, dauresi, kassiapleuensis, and puetzi — reflecting the considerable colour variation found across its range in the Cavally, Nipoue, Sangwin, Mani, and Noun river drainages. Current usage treats these populations without formal subspecific rank, though hobbyists and killifish associations routinely maintain and label them by collection locality to preserve genetic integrity. The authority is presented in parentheses because Poll originally described the species under a different generic combination.

The epithet honours Professor F. M. Olbrechts, the original collector of the type material, in the standard Latinised possessive form — olbrechtsi, meaning 'of Olbrechts'.

Morphology

Epiplatys olbrechtsi is a slender, laterally compressed killifish with a pointed snout and a strongly upturned mouth — the classic profile of a surface-feeding ambush predator. Published size records range from approximately 3 in SL (FishBase) to 3.5 in total length (4 in TL, 3 in SL per J. J. Scheel's measurements cited in American Killifish Association references), with some males reaching close to 4 in under optimal aquarium conditions.

Male coloration is the chief attraction of the species: the body is overlaid with rows of red or orange spots or streaks on an olive to blue-green ground, giving the fish a jewelled appearance that intensifies during courtship. The finnage is pointed and often shows additional colour; males of the azureus population group in particular are notable for their brilliant blue iridescence. Females are comparatively plain — brownish to olive with faint patterning — and lack the extended or ornamented fins of the males.

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced and consistent: males are more colourful, more slender, and have longer, more pointed unpaired fins; females are deeper-bodied and shorter-finned, a pattern universal in Epiplatys.

Habitat

The species is native to the coastal-forest zone of West Africa on both sides of the Liberia–Côte d'Ivoire border, with its core range in the river systems draining to the Atlantic through the Cavally, Nipoue, Sangwin, and Mani drainages, and the Noun River tributaries of the Liberian interior. The American Killifish Association records 24 documented collection locations across this range, extending into south-eastern Guinea. The type locality is the small Maseni River on the Ivory Coast–Liberia border.

Within this range the fish inhabits small rivers, forest streams, and swamp margins — shallow, often shaded water where surface-floating vegetation provides cover and a concentration of terrestrial invertebrates falling from overhanging trees. It is a non-seasonal species tied to permanent or near-permanent water bodies rather than temporary seasonal pools, which distinguishes it ecologically from the annual Nothobranchius or Fundulopanchax that exploit ephemeral savanna pools.

Water chemistry at collection sites reflects the moderately soft, slightly acidic conditions of West African forest streams: the British Killifish Association records a hardness of around 1 dH and pH 6.3–6.8 at the type locality, with temperatures around 70–73 °F. FishBase notes a pH of 5.8 for the species. Best aquarium results are reported at the lower end of this pH range with minimal hardness.

Feeding

Like all Epiplatys, olbrechtsi is a surface and near-surface predator whose upturned mouth is anatomically optimised for snatching prey from the air–water interface. In the wild the diet consists primarily of aquatic and terrestrial insects, insect larvae, small crustaceans, and other invertebrates encountered at or near the surface beneath riparian vegetation.

In captivity the fish readily accepts a wide range of live and frozen invertebrate foods: fruit flies (Drosophila), bloodworm, mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, and small earthworm pieces are all eagerly taken. Dry foods are accepted by most individuals once acclimatised, particularly small floating pellets and flakes presented at the surface. Frequent feeding of varied, protein-rich foods is recommended for optimal colour development and conditioning prior to breeding.

Mating

Epiplatys olbrechtsi is a non-annual killifish and breeds in the manner typical of the genus: as a plant-spawner whose eggs are laid adhesively on fine-leaved vegetation, floating plants, or artificial spawning mops near the water surface, without diapause or any requirement for a dry resting period. This places it in a fundamentally different reproductive category from the annual soil-burying killifish of seasonal pools.

Courtship follows a brief, energetic pattern. The male approaches the female with rapid, short dashes — a characteristic Epiplatys display — that serve both to stimulate the female and to establish dominance. When the female is receptive, the pair come together side by side just below or at the surface and release a single egg with each brief spawning embrace. No damage to females during normal spawning has been reported, and the process is relaxed enough that pairs can be conditioned and bred without the elaborate conditioning or separation protocols sometimes needed with more aggressive killifish. Some breeders nevertheless separate the pair for a few days beforehand and condition them individually on live foods to prime reproductive behaviour.

Breeding

Eggs are deposited singly on fine-leaved floating plants such as Riccia fluitans or on spawning mops positioned near the water surface, and occasionally on the bottom of a mop as well. The eggs are moderately large and nearly transparent, adhesive, and water-incubated — there is no diapause and they must remain in water throughout development. Incubation temperature governs hatch time substantially: at 70 °F the British Killifish Association records hatching at around 15 days; the American Killifish Association cites an 8–14 day range across reported breeding accounts, consistent with the shorter end at higher temperatures.

Fry are small at hatching but robust by killifish standards, and they take nauplii of brine shrimp and fine-grade commercial fry foods from the first day of free swimming. Sexual maturity is reached at five to six months. Because adults do not pursue or consume eggs with the aggression of some killifish, the breeding setup can be as simple as a small tank with a clump of Java moss or a floating mop and a conditioned pair; eggs can be collected periodically for separate hatching or fry allowed to grow on with adults in a well-planted tank with adequate cover. Water should be kept soft (1 dH or lower) and slightly acidic (pH 6.3–6.8) for best results.

In the aquarium

Epiplatys olbrechtsi is regarded as moderately accessible among the West African panchax killifish — easier than many specialist killifish to breed and maintain, yet still somewhat demanding in its preference for soft, acidic water and its sensitivity to the sudden pH and hardness shifts that come with using hard tap water. FishBase characterises it as difficult to maintain, which in practice means that consistent water quality and chemistry attention, rather than any particular technical challenge, are the keys to success.

A pair or small group can be housed in a tank of 10–15 US gal or larger, heavily planted and covered (killifish are capable jumpers and any gap in the lid will be exploited). Surface cover from floating plants reduces stress and mimics the shaded forest-stream environment. The species is peaceful toward similarly sized tankmates but should not be kept with fish large enough to intimidate it or small enough to be eaten. Conspecific males can be kept together given sufficient space, though some territorial skirmishing at the surface is normal.

In killifish hobby circles the various population forms — particularly the vivid azureus lineage — are maintained by specialist breeders and traded through killifish association auctions and fish-of-the-month programmes. Because colour forms interbreed freely, maintaining separate labelled strains by collection locality is considered good practice within the killifish community.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Epiplatys olbrechtsi as Least Concern in 2020, with the evaluation conducted by Diallo, Snoeks, Lalèyè, and Contreras MacBeath. The assessment acknowledges a sufficiently wide distribution across both Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia, and the presence of 24 documented collection localities, as the basis for the LC determination. Both range countries are coded as high-importance occurrences.

Despite the LC rating, the species' reliance on intact coastal-forest streams places it in a habitat under sustained pressure. West Africa's Upper Guinean forest block — the broad biogeographic region encompassing the Cavally, Nipoue, and adjoining drainages — has experienced substantial deforestation over recent decades driven by agriculture, logging, and charcoal production. Canopy removal changes the hydrology, temperature, and chemistry of small forest streams, and silt loading from cleared hillsides can degrade the clear, shallow waters the species depends on.

Additional pressure comes from the introduction of the Nile tilapia and other non-native species into West African river systems, which compete with and prey on native small-bodied fish. The species does not appear in international trade in significant numbers and is not targeted by commercial fisheries, but localised threats at individual collection sites — particularly around the type locality on the Liberia–Côte d'Ivoire border — are plausible given the limited size of many of the small tributaries it inhabits. Continued forest conservation in the Upper Guinean region is the single most important factor for its long-term security.
