Taxonomy & naming
Episemion krystallinoron was formally described by Sonnenberg, Blum & Misof in 2006 in Zootaxa 1361(1): 1–20. It was only the second species assigned to the genus Episemion, the first being Episemion callipteron — making the genus, at the time of description, a true pair. The genus Episemion belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae, the Old World killifishes of Africa, and is recognised as a valid genus under the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & van der Laan). Hobbyist literature occasionally references the species under the older combination Aphyosemion (Episemion) krystallinoron, reflecting a time when Episemion was treated as a subgenus of the large and historically heterogeneous Aphyosemion assemblage; the American Killifish Association's listing under that combination preserves that usage.
The specific epithet krystallinoron is derived from the Greek krystallos (crystal, clear) and a reference to the pellucid, fast-flowing streams in which the species was found — streams notably clearer and more oxygenated than the tea-coloured, tannin-stained blackwater streams many West African killifishes occupy. The combination thus encodes the habitat itself in the name. The genus epithet Episemion is from the Greek episēmon, meaning 'conspicuous' or 'distinguished by a mark', likely an allusion to the vivid colour patterning that characterises males.
Morphology
Episemion krystallinoron is a small killifish, with the original description recording a maximum size of 1.5 in standard length (approximately 1.5 in SL). Males are distinguished from females by vivid colour patterning, the details of which prompted the species' description as distinct from E. callipteron; the specific colour pattern of the krystallinoron males constitutes the primary diagnostic character separating the two Episemion species. As is typical of nothobranchiid killies, the body is elongate and moderately compressed, with the dorsal and anal fins positioned posteriorly and the mouth directed slightly upward.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced and is the most immediately apparent field character. Males carry the elaborate colouration characteristic of the genus; females are cryptically coloured, as is common across Aphyosemion-allied genera. The original description in Zootaxa provides the detailed morphometric and meristic data for the species.
Habitat
The type locality of Episemion krystallinoron lies in the Monts de Cristal, the highland massif of northwestern Gabon, and the species is known from that area and the immediately adjacent southeastern corner of Equatorial Guinea. The streams inhabited are small — FishBase records widths of approximately 13–16 ft and depths of 3 ft — with fast flow, sandy substrates, and no submerged aquatic vegetation. The stream banks carry dense overhanging terrestrial vegetation that shades the water and supplies allochthonous invertebrate input.
Water chemistry measured at the type locality indicates conditions typical of highland equatorial forest streams: a temperature of around 77 °F, near-neutral pH of approximately 6.8–7.0, and very low mineralisation (approximately 50 mg/L total dissolved solids; hardness around 5 dGH). This profile is softer and more acidic than most savanna-stream killies but less extreme than the pH < 5 blackwater conditions of some West African lowland forest species. The benthopelagic, fast-water ecology is unusual in the genus and within the wider killi hobby context, where most comparable species prefer slower or still water.
Feeding
Like the majority of small nothobranchiid killifishes, Episemion krystallinoron is an opportunistic invertivore. The original description and associated field notes indicate a diet of small invertebrates and detritus, consistent with the benthopelagic lifestyle in fast-flowing forest streams where drifting invertebrate prey and fine organic particles are the predominant food sources available near the substrate and mid-water column.
In captivity, the species is presumed to accept the range of small live and frozen invertebrate foods standard for killifishes of this size class — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, small bloodworm, and micro-worm — along with fine prepared foods. Its small maximum size limits the prey it can take, and feeds should be sized accordingly.
Mating
Episemion krystallinoron is a non-annual killifish. It inhabits permanent or near-permanent highland forest streams and reproduces as a plant spawner (or fine-substrate adhesive spawner), depositing adhesive eggs on fine-leaved vegetation, roots, or spawning mop fibres rather than burying eggs in a peat substrate to undergo diapause. This reproductive mode is the defining distinction between the non-annual killifishes of the Aphyosemion alliance — which include Episemion — and the annual killifishes of seasonally ephemeral pools.
The original description notes that breeding in the wild is year-round, modulated by the annual rainfall cycle of the Monts de Cristal region rather than by a dry season during which an adult population would perish and eggs would diapause in soil. Males display vivid colour patterning that functions in mate choice and intersexual competition; the dimorphism is strong, with females showing no equivalent ornamental coloration. Pairs deposit eggs individually or in small numbers over extended periods, a reproductive pace consistent with the plant-spawner mode.
Breeding
In the aquarium, Episemion krystallinoron is bred by the same methods used for non-annual West African killifishes of comparable genera. Pairs or trios (one male, one or two females) are conditioned on live and frozen invertebrate foods and placed in a well-planted tank or one furnished with fine-fibred spawning mops. Eggs are deposited singly or in small numbers on plant leaves or mop fibres over a period of days to weeks, and are collected by hand-picking or by removing the mop and replacing it with a fresh one.
Collected eggs are incubated in shallow water or on damp medium — typically peat fibre or a fine spawning substrate — at around 72–75 °F. Hatching time varies with temperature but generally occurs within two to three weeks. Fry are small at hatching and require fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial fry powders, graduating to newly hatched Artemia nauplii and micro-worm within days. Growth is steady in clean, warm, well-fed conditions. Because the species is a highland stream fish accustomed to moderate flow and good oxygenation, still, oxygen-poor water should be avoided during rearing.
In the aquarium
Episemion krystallinoron remains an uncommon species in the hobby, but it has attracted the attention of specialist killifish keepers drawn to the unusual ecology of the genus — a group of small, brilliantly coloured fish from fast-flowing highland streams rather than the swamps and still forest pools most hobbyists associate with West African killies. Its small size (under 1.5 in SL) makes it suitable for modest setups; a well-planted or moss-furnished 10–15 US gal aquarium is adequate for a pair or trio.
Water conditions should reflect the type-locality profile: soft (hardness 2–5 dGH), slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.5–7.0), and around 72–77 °F. Some gentle flow is beneficial given the fast-stream origin. The tank should be well covered, as killies are accomplished jumpers. A dark substrate and subdued lighting bring out the male's colours; floating plants help maintain a diffuse light level and provide surface cover. Tankmates, if any, should be small, peaceful, and not competitive with the killies at feeding time. The species is best kept as a dedicated breeding project rather than a community display.
Conservation
Episemion krystallinoron has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This is a common situation for recently described, narrowly distributed killies that have not yet been reached by the assessment process. The species is known from a small geographic footprint centred on the Monts de Cristal highlands of northwestern Gabon and immediately adjacent Equatorial Guinea — a range that makes it inherently vulnerable to any localised threat affecting its handful of known stream localities.
The Monts de Cristal region supports significant intact Guineo-Congolian rainforest, which has historically buffered the watersheds inhabited by this and other endemic stream fishes. However, expanding logging concessions, artisanal and small-scale mining activity, and road construction in the broader northwestern Gabon region pose potential threats to water quality and stream integrity in upland catchments. As a small-range endemic confined to clear, fast-flowing highland streams with very low mineralisation, the species is likely sensitive to sedimentation and chemical pollution. Formal assessment and targeted surveys to determine the full extent of the range are the immediate conservation priorities.
