The genus Aphyosemion is one of the most species-rich genera of killifish, and its internal classification has been repeatedly revised as molecular phylogenetics have refined relationships among the numerous small, often brilliantly coloured species of the Guinea Coast, Cameroon, and Gabon. Aphyosemion hera belongs among the non-annual members of the genus — species associated with permanent or near-permanent water bodies that do not produce diapausing eggs adapted to survive the desiccation of seasonal pools.
