Taxonomy & naming
Aphyosemion etsamense was originally described by Arthur Claus Radda in 1975, placing it within the large and taxonomically complex West and Central African genus Aphyosemion. The valid authority is therefore presented in parentheses — (Radda, 1975) — indicating that subsequent revisors may have moved the species within the genus but the original describer's name is retained. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) lists Aphyosemion etsamense (Radda, 1975) as the currently accepted combination, placed in the family Nothobranchiidae.
The specific epithet etsamense is a toponym derived from the type locality, Etsam I, a forested stream site in northwestern Gabon. Such geographic epithets are standard practice in Aphyosemion taxonomy, where the genus contains several hundred species and subspecies, many of which are distinguished from close relatives largely on the basis of locality-linked colour pattern. The Monts de Cristal massif, from which this species is described, is a centre of endemism for forest biota in Gabon, and A. etsamense is one of several killifish endemic to that block.
Within Aphyosemion, the species falls among the so-called non-annual or permanently-watered species that occupy permanent or near-permanent streams. It should not be confused with the annual killifish of the genus Fundulopanchax or the true annual African killies that spawn exclusively in ephemeral pools.
Morphology
Aphyosemion etsamense is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length (SL) — a typical size for the smaller members of the genus. Like other Aphyosemion, the body profile is slightly arched at the dorsal surface, with a pointed snout, a terminal or slightly upturned mouth adapted for surface and mid-water feeding, and relatively large eyes. The caudal fin tends toward the lyre-shaped or rounded form common in the genus, and the dorsal and anal fins are set far back, nearly opposite each other — a characteristic placement in killifish.
Colour pattern in Aphyosemion is the primary diagnostic character at the species level, and males of A. etsamense display the vivid iridescent markings and red or blue spotting on a brown or greenish base that characterise the group. Females are more cryptically coloured, typically olive-brown with reduced or absent flank markings — a pronounced sexual dichromatism that is characteristic of the genus and of Aphyosemion in particular. Precise colour descriptions for etsamense from museum or field material are not widely documented in the hobbyist literature, consistent with the species' rarity in the trade.
The scales are cycloid and the lateral line is absent or reduced, as is typical for nothobranchid killifish. The fins lack spines.
Habitat
The known range of Aphyosemion etsamense is restricted to the Monts de Cristal area of northwestern Gabon, centred on the type locality at Etsam I. This region is covered by lowland and submontane Atlantic equatorial rainforest, one of Central Africa's most biodiverse and least-disturbed forest blocks. The streams it occupies are characteristic West African forest killies habitat: slow-moving to nearly still, shallow, with substrates of leaf litter and decomposing organic matter, heavily shaded by the rainforest canopy, and naturally tannin-stained to a light tea or amber colour.
Water chemistry at the type locality and in comparable Monts de Cristal streams is soft and mildly acidic. FishBase records a mean temperature of approximately 75 °F and a pH around 6.5, with very low hardness (around 10 dGH). These conditions reflect the limited buffering capacity of the ancient Precambrian basement rocks and the high organic acid load from decaying leaf litter — the same conditions found throughout the range of West African forest Aphyosemion. Dissolved oxygen levels are typically moderate to high in shaded forest streams of this type, in contrast to the stagnant, oxygen-depleted pools favoured by annual killies.
The permanent or near-permanent nature of Monts de Cristal streams is consistent with the species' non-annual life history: unlike annual killifish of seasonally desiccating savannas, A. etsamense does not need to complete its life cycle before a pool dries out.
Feeding
Aphyosemion etsamense feeds on small invertebrates, as is typical for the genus. In the wild, the diet consists primarily of microcrustaceans (copepods, cladocerans), small insect larvae, worms, and other zooplankton encountered at or near the water surface and in the mid-water column. The upturned mouth is well adapted for taking prey at the surface film, and insects falling onto the water from the surrounding forest canopy likely form a significant opportunistic food source.
In the aquarium, non-annual Aphyosemion such as A. etsamense accept a range of small live and frozen foods — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm, tubifex, and similar invertebrate-based offerings — and will often adapt to high-quality micro-pellets or granular dried foods. Variety in the diet supports good colour expression and condition, particularly in males whose vivid pigmentation is nutritionally linked. Overfeeding should be avoided, as the small permanent aquaria typically used for killies accumulate waste rapidly.
Mating
Aphyosemion etsamense is a non-annual, plant-spawning killifish. Rather than burying eggs in substrate to survive desiccation, pairs deposit small numbers of adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, floating roots, Java moss, or synthetic spawning mops positioned near the surface or close to the substrate. Spawning is not a single mass event but a protracted process in which the pair visit spawning sites repeatedly over days or weeks, laying only a few eggs at each contact — a strategy well suited to permanent-water environments where there is no urgency to complete a full clutch before the habitat disappears.
Male Aphyosemion in breeding condition display intensified coloration and engage in lateral displays and fin-spreading toward females and rival males. Spawning behaviour is generally gentle relative to annual killifish, and the male does not drive females aggressively. In the aquarium, a well-planted tank or a tank with spawning mops allows collection of eggs without disturbing the pair continuously. The male courts the female with spread fins before the two position side by side, the male pressing against the female as both release gametes simultaneously onto or among the spawning medium.
Breeding
Eggs of non-annual Aphyosemion are adhesive, small, and transparent to faintly amber. They incubate in water — there is no diapause and no requirement to store eggs in damp peat — and hatch after roughly two to three weeks at temperatures around 75 °F. The relatively long water-incubation period compared with annual killifish reflects the permanent-water life history: eggs need to be resistant to fungal attack and physical disturbance over the full incubation period without any protective dry storage phase.
Fry are very small at hatching and require fine first foods: infusoria, Paramecium cultures, or commercially prepared fry powder for the first days, followed by freshly hatched Artemia nauplii as they grow. Water quality in rearing vessels must be carefully managed; small volumes foul quickly. Growth is moderately fast under good conditions. Unlike annual killies, which must mature quickly before seasonal die-off, non-annual Aphyosemion are comparatively long-lived — adults may survive two to three years or more in optimal aquarium conditions, and the species can be kept in breeding pairs or trios (one male, two females) over extended periods.
The British Killifish Association's archives confirm the non-annual reproductive mode for A. etsamense, and hobbyist accounts of closely related Monts de Cristal Aphyosemion consistently describe the same mop/plant-spawner approach, with egg collection and water-incubation as standard breeding practice.
In the aquarium
Aphyosemion etsamense is rarely encountered in the hobby and is essentially a specialist's fish — sought mainly by killifish enthusiasts affiliated with organisations such as the American Killifish Association (AKA) or British Killifish Association (BKA), who maintain breeding loans and species preservation lists for less-commonly traded West African killies. When available, it can be kept in small, well-planted aquaria of 5.5–10 US gal, either as a species tank or with very small, peaceful companions that will not compete with or predate it.
Water should replicate the soft, mildly acidic forest-stream conditions of the Monts de Cristal: temperature 72–79 °F, pH 6.0–6.8, very soft to soft (low hardness). Gentle filtration — a small sponge filter is ideal — avoids the strong flow that killies do not favour. The tank should be tightly covered, as killies are accomplished jumpers. Dim lighting with floating plants or a leaf-litter layer suits the species' preference for shaded, tannin-stained water and tends to produce calmer, more colourful fish.
For comparative water chemistry guidance, non-annual Aphyosemion from similar West African rainforest habitats are maintained at pH 6.5–7.0 and around 75–77 °F; these figures align well with FishBase data for A. etsamense and can be used as an aquarium target in the absence of species-specific hobbyist records. Feeding on small live or frozen invertebrate foods, combined with small partial water changes several times a week, constitutes standard care for this group.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Aphyosemion etsamense in 2009 (assessor T. Moelants) and returned a Data Deficient (DD) verdict, noting insufficient information to determine whether the species meets the criteria for a threatened category. The assessment does not imply the species is unthreatened; it reflects the absence of reliable population size estimates, trend data, or detailed distributional information for a narrow-range endemic from a poorly surveyed region.
The Monts de Cristal is Gabon's oldest protected area and retains large areas of intact lowland rainforest, which provides some degree of habitat security for A. etsamense. However, the massif faces logging pressure at its margins, small-scale artisanal mining, and the gradual expansion of agricultural clearance. Any killifish with a very restricted distribution — apparently limited to the Etsam I drainage and close-by Monts de Cristal streams — is inherently vulnerable to a single habitat-disruption event, particularly if its range does not overlap substantially with the protected core of the massif.
No introduced mosquitofish (Gambusia) or other invasive predators are documented specifically from the type locality, but this threat is increasingly relevant across West Africa. The species' non-annual life history means it does not need to race against seasonal drying, but it also means adult and juvenile fish co-occur for extended periods in permanent streams, making established populations susceptible to localised overharvesting or pollution events. Given the global rarity of the species in the hobby, dedicated preservation breeding through killifish societies represents a meaningful contribution to its ex-situ conservation.
