The Gabon killi is a small, non-annual killifish endemic to the coastal rainforest drainages of Gabon, where it inhabits the permanent streams, swamps, and forest pools of the lower Ogooué and Ngounié river basins. Described by the Austrian killifish specialist Arthur Radda in 1975, Aphyosemion gabunense belongs to one of the most species-rich genera of African egg-laying cyprinodontids, a group renowned for extraordinary colour diversity and highly localised distributions. Unlike the seasonal annual killies that bury eggs in drying mud, this species is a plant-spawner that deposits adhesive eggs in vegetation and roots in permanently watered habitats — a biological strategy that makes it comparatively long-lived and forgiving to keep, and one that has earned it a steady place in the specialist killifish hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyosemion gabunense was described by Arthur C. Radda in 1975, with the type locality in Gabon. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Aphyosemion gabunense Radda, 1975. The species belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae as currently constituted, within which Aphyosemion — in the broad, traditional sense — is a large, paraphyletic assemblage of small West and Central African killifish undergoing continuing taxonomic revision. The authority is not parenthesised, indicating the species has remained in the genus to which Radda originally assigned it.

The specific epithet gabunense is a Latinised adjective meaning 'of Gabon', directly referencing the country where the species was collected and described — a straightforward toponym that has the merit of pinning the species unambiguously to its native territory. The genus name Aphyosemion derives from Greek: aphyō (small fish or fry) combined with sēmeion (sign or mark), a compound that alludes to the vivid patterning characteristic of the group. FishBase lists 'Gabon killi' as the English vernacular name.

The genus Aphyosemion is in a state of active systematic revision, with molecular studies repeatedly demonstrating that it is not monophyletic as classically defined. Some authorities place populations formerly attributed to Aphyosemion into segregate genera. Until a comprehensive revision is formally accepted and taken up in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, Aphyosemion gabunense remains the valid combination for this species.

Morphology

Aphyosemion gabunense is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum of 2 in total length (FishBase; Seriously Fish gives 1.5–2 in). Males are more vividly coloured than females, as is typical across the genus, displaying intricate patterns of iridescent blue, green, red, and orange on the flanks and fins — the precise arrangement of spots, streaks, and fin colouration varies by collection locality and has been the subject of close attention from killifish collectors. The dorsal, caudal, and anal fins are pointed or lyre-shaped in males, often edged with red or yellow borders.

Females are considerably plainer: pale brownish to olive, sometimes with scattered dark speckling, and with rounded, smaller fins. Gravid females become noticeably deeper-bodied as the ovaries develop. The size differential between sexes is slight; males may be marginally more elongate. The body is typical of Aphyosemion in general build — tapering toward the caudal peduncle, with the dorsal and anal fins set well back and positioned opposite one another, characteristic of the cyprinodontid body plan.

Habitat

Aphyosemion gabunense is endemic to the lower Ogooué river basin and its Ngounié tributary in coastal Gabon, a region of dense equatorial rainforest. Within this range it occupies small streams, forest swamps, marginal pools, and still or sluggishly flowing waters associated with permanent water bodies — it is not a seasonal fish and is not associated with ephemeral pools that dry annually. This distinguishes it clearly from the annual killifish of the savanna zone that share the same family.

The water in these Gabonese forest systems is characteristically soft, low in dissolved minerals, and often lightly tannin-stained by leaf litter and rotting wood. FishBase and Seriously Fish record a temperature range of 72–77 °F and a pH of 6.5–7.2 with soft water (Seriously Fish gives 5–15 °dH). The fish is associated with fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, root masses, and leaf-litter accumulations near the water margins — features that provide both refuge from predators and substrates for egg deposition. Shade from the forest canopy keeps temperatures stable and light levels low.

Feeding

In the wild, Aphyosemion gabunense feeds on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and worms — consistent with the diet of the broader genus across West and Central African forest streams. The mouth is small and upturned, suited to intercepting items at or near the water surface and within the water column rather than to bottom-feeding.

In the aquarium the species accepts small live and frozen foods readily: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), tubifex, and white mosquito larvae are all suitable. Seriously Fish notes that it will also accept quality dried food, though live and frozen items are preferred for conditioning breeding pairs. Small particle size is important; large pellets or chunks should not be offered. As with most small killies, varied feeding supports better colouration and reproductive condition.

Mating

Aphyosemion gabunense is a non-annual plant-spawner: pairs or small trios deposit adhesive eggs in fine-leaved aquatic plants, floating spawning mops, root masses, or other soft substrates rather than burying eggs in bottom sediment. Spawning takes place over days or weeks rather than in a single intense event, with a few eggs laid at each encounter between male and female. This continuous, low-intensity strategy is typical of non-annual Aphyosemion species inhabiting permanent water, where there is no selective pressure to pack all reproduction into a brief rainy-season window.

Males display actively to females, spreading their coloured fins and manoeuvring alongside or below the female before pressing against her and releasing eggs and sperm simultaneously among plant leaves or mop fibres. Competition between males in a colony or group can result in harassment of females; a ratio of one male to two or more females, or a well-planted tank with broken sightlines, reduces stress. Seriously Fish notes that spawning can be done in pairs or trios among substrate or vegetation.

Breeding

Eggs are deposited singly or in small clusters among plant leaves, floating mops, or root masses and adhere to the substrate on contact. They incubate in water at the ambient temperature — no drying, chilling, or peat storage is required, in contrast to annual killifish. At 72–77 °F incubation takes approximately 10–14 days (typical for non-annual Aphyosemion), after which the fry hatch free-swimming and large enough to accept Artemia nauplii immediately. Because parents may consume eggs and fry, eggs should be moved to a separate rearing container or the adults removed after each spawning cycle.

Rearing water should be soft and slightly acidic, matching the parents' preferred parameters. Regular small water changes maintain quality as fry grow rapidly. Sexual maturity is reached in a few months. The species' non-annual nature and continuous spawning pattern mean that a well-maintained pair can produce modest but steady numbers of fry over an extended period — quite different from the burst-and-rest pattern of annual species. Seriously Fish recommends dark peat moss as a substrate option for spawning setups.

In the aquarium

Aphyosemion gabunense is considered one of the more approachable Aphyosemion species for killifish beginners: it is non-annual, so it does not require peat-incubation technique, and it accepts a modest water-chemistry range (pH 6.5–7.2, 72–77 °F, soft to moderately soft water). A small, well-planted aquarium with a tight-fitting lid — essential, as all killifish are skilled jumpers — housing a pair or small group in species-only conditions is the standard approach. Dark substrate and floating plants or a spawning mop provide the shaded, structured environment the fish prefers.

The Gabon killi is not a community-tank fish in the conventional sense: it is small and timid, and will be outcompeted or harassed by most active community species. It does best either alone or alongside other small, gentle killifish or nano fish of comparable temperament. Regular water changes and a diet of small live or frozen invertebrates keep it in best condition and colour. Males display vivid colouration when settled and well-fed, making the species a rewarding subject for the specialist nano or killifish aquarist.

Conservation

Aphyosemion gabunense has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List, and its status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE). The species is confined to the lower Ogooué and Ngounié basins in Gabon — a restricted endemic range that, as a matter of principle, makes it inherently vulnerable to localised threats. The equatorial rainforest of coastal Gabon has to date been subject to less intensive agricultural conversion than forests elsewhere in Central Africa, but logging, road construction, and mineral extraction continue to expand into previously undisturbed drainages, with attendant risks of sedimentation, runoff contamination, and stream-channel alteration that could degrade the clear, soft-water forest streams the species requires.

In the hobby the Gabon killi is maintained in captive populations by killifish societies, and fish circulate under collection-code designations recording the original collection locality. These captive stocks serve an informal conservation function, preserving genetic diversity from populations that might later become difficult to re-sample in the wild. A formal IUCN assessment covering the species' range extent, population size, and habitat trend would be a valuable step toward understanding how secure this Gabonese endemic actually is.
