Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus seiteri was described by Dirk F. E. Thys van den Audenaerde in 1972, originally placed in the genus Caecomastacembelus — one of several African segregate genera erected to accommodate spiny eels that differed slightly from the Asian type. A phylogenetic revision of the Mastacembelidae published in 2005 concluded that Caecomastacembelus, Aethiomastacembelus and Afromastacembelus were not well-supported as distinct from Mastacembelus, and all three were synonymised; M. seiteri is accordingly the accepted combination today. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for this placement.
Mastacembelidae belongs to the order Synbranchiformes, making spiny eels close relatives of the swamp eels (Synbranchidae) rather than of the true eels (Anguilliformes). Their eel-like shape is convergent. The genus Mastacembelus now encompasses roughly 60 or more species distributed across tropical Africa and Asia, with the African contingent heavily concentrated in the rift lakes and the major river basins of the Congo, Niger and Nile systems.
Morphology
Like all spiny eels, Mastacembelus seiteri has a greatly elongated, laterally compressed body covered in tiny embedded scales and heavy mucus rather than the visible scales of most teleosts. The snout terminates in a fleshy, trunk-like rostral proboscis tipped with tubular nostrils — the characteristic probe that members of this family use to search substrate for food. A row of short, stiff spines runs along the dorsal midline anterior to the soft dorsal fin, giving the family its common name; the soft dorsal continues around the tail and connects with the anal fin.
FishBase records the maximum standard length for M. seiteri at 14.5 in SL. The coloration of this species is not well described in the literature beyond the general brownish or olive tones typical of West African riverine mastacembelids. There is no documented external sexual dimorphism, though ripe females of spiny eels typically become noticeably fuller-bodied in the belly.
Habitat
Mastacembelus seiteri is endemic to the Sanaga River basin in Cameroon, making it a narrow-range West African endemic. The Sanaga is the largest river entirely within Cameroon, draining a broad highland catchment before flowing southwest to the Atlantic coast. FishBase characterises this species as demersal and freshwater, inhabiting slow streams with sandy bottoms — the soft, benthic substrate typical for a burrowing spiny eel.
Like other mastacembelids, it is presumed to be nocturnal and to spend much of the day buried in or sheltering beneath sandy substrate, emerging after dark to forage. West African lowland rivers in the Sanaga basin offer warm water with relatively soft, slightly acidic to neutral chemistry, in contrast to the hard, alkaline conditions of the rift-lake Mastacembelus species. Precise temperature, pH and hardness records for this species in the wild are not available in the published literature.
Feeding
Mastacembelus seiteri is a benthic carnivore. No detailed dietary study of this species has been published, but its anatomy and family affinity leave little doubt about its feeding ecology: the fleshy, probing snout is adapted for rooting insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and other invertebrates from soft substrates, and small fishes are likely taken opportunistically.
In the aquarium, spiny eels of this size should be offered meaty benthic foods in the evening — bloodworm, tubifex, earthworm pieces and other frozen or live invertebrates. Feeding after lights-out is advisable because newly settled fish can be reluctant to feed while exposed or under bright lighting.
Mating
Mastacembelus seiteri is a spiny eel and, as such, is an egg-scattering freshwater spawner — not a true eel, and it does not undertake any marine migration to breed. No published account of courtship behaviour exists for this species specifically. Across the family, spawning is thought to be triggered by seasonal cues — rising water temperature, increased rainfall and the flooding of marginal habitats that the wet season brings in tropical West Africa.
Where spiny-eel courtship has been observed, a compatible pair will circle, entwine and move into shallow marginal vegetation before scattering adhesive eggs. There is no nest construction, no pair bond that persists beyond the spawn, and no territorial behaviour by either parent following spawning.
Breeding
Mastacembelus seiteri has not been recorded as breeding in the home aquarium. Diet, care and breeding data are noted as sparse in FishBase, and it is a genuinely obscure species that is seldom encountered in the ornamental trade. The genus-level expectation for African spiny eels of comparable size is that spawning occurs in fresh water among fine vegetation or leaf litter, with adhesive eggs scattered and then abandoned; no parental care is given, and the eggs hatch within a few days under warm conditions.
Any hobbyist who obtained a pair and wished to attempt breeding would likely follow the protocol used for related species: a large, well-established aquarium with a soft sand bed, a diet of live and frozen invertebrates to bring the fish into condition, and a simulated wet-season trigger via a series of large, slightly cooler water changes. Success remains undocumented in the available literature.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus seiteri is rarely available in the ornamental trade and can be considered a specialist or oddity fish rather than a staple of the hobby. At a maximum of around 14.5 in SL it is a mid-sized spiny eel, suited to a well-filtered aquarium of modest to moderate dimensions — considerably smaller than the demands of the fire eel or tire-track eel — but it still requires the essential features of any mastacembelid setup: a deep bed of soft sand for burrowing, caves and shaded retreats, and dim or indirect lighting to coax it into daytime activity.
Like all spiny eels it is scaleless and acutely sensitive to copper-based medications and to deteriorating water quality; a stable, mature system and attention to water change discipline are essential. The most important husbandry rule for any spiny eel is a fully sealed, weighted lid — these fish are consummate escape artists that will squeeze through the smallest gaps, come to rest on the floor, and desiccate. Tankmates should be peaceful and too large to be swallowed; the species is likely nocturnal and will hunt small fish after dark. Given sand, cover and evening feeds, it should prove a long-lived, personable inhabitant of a West African biotope or species display.
Conservation
Mastacembelus seiteri is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessed 2009). Despite its status as a narrow-range endemic confined to the Sanaga River basin in Cameroon, there is no evidence of an ongoing population-level decline sufficient to qualify for a threatened category at the time of assessment.
Nevertheless, narrow endemism is an inherent vulnerability. The Sanaga basin faces pressures including hydroelectric development — the river hosts several dams and further infrastructure is planned — as well as agricultural runoff, artisanal fishing pressure and downstream sedimentation. A species with this restricted a range could see its assessment change if targeted surveys reveal range contraction or if habitat degradation intensifies. It is currently too data-poor and too rarely traded to face meaningful collection pressure from the aquarium industry, but its long-term security depends on the health of its single river system.
