Fundulopanchax kamdemi is a compact, brilliantly coloured killifish endemic to Korup National Park in the coastal lowlands of Cameroon — one of the most species-rich protected rainforests in Africa. Males carry a distinctive red longitudinal band along the flanks, a character unique within the genus Fundulopanchax that immediately separates this species from its close relatives. Known only from shallow, tannin-stained forest pools inside a single protected area, F. kamdemi is a conservation-flagged microendemic that attracts specialist killifish hobbyists precisely because of its rarity and its vivid, taxonomically diagnostic colouration.

Taxonomy & naming

Fundulopanchax kamdemi was formally described in 2007 by Akum, Sonnenberg, Van der Zee and Wildekamp, with the type locality recorded as Korup National Park, Cameroon. The species is placed in Class 6 of the American Killifish Association classification system — the large and diverse Fundulopanchax species group, which encompasses many of the most popular West African killifishes in the specialist hobby.

The genus Fundulopanchax is treated as valid by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, and the authority for this species is correctly cited as Akum, Sonnenberg, Van der Zee & Wildekamp, 2007. The specific epithet kamdemi is toponymic, derived from the locality of collection within Korup National Park, honouring the place of discovery in the Cameroonian coastal forest belt.

Within the genus, F. kamdemi is notable for the male's prominent red lateral stripe — a character that has not been documented in any other Fundulopanchax, and which makes field and aquarium identification straightforward despite the genus's otherwise complex and visually similar species assemblage.

Morphology

Males reach approximately 3 in standard length (FishBase); females are slightly smaller. The body form is typical of the genus: moderately elongate and laterally compressed, with a slightly upturned mouth adapted to surface feeding and a rounded caudal fin. Scales are cycloid and moderately large.

Male colouration is striking. The flanks carry a vivid red longitudinal band that runs from behind the pectoral fin base to the caudal peduncle — the genus's unique diagnostic character for this species. Background body colouration is typically a rich blue-green or turquoise iridescence, set off by the contrasting red stripe and red-suffused unpaired fins. Females are considerably plainer: cryptic olive-brown or buff overall, with little patterning, consistent with the camouflage strategy of egg-depositing females that remain close to the substrate.

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced, as is standard for Fundulopanchax: males display brilliant structural and pigment colours while females are drab, a pattern driven by sexual selection in a genus where males actively court and compete for spawning access.

Habitat

Fundulopanchax kamdemi is known exclusively from shallow swampy pools and slow-moving forest water within Korup National Park, southwestern Cameroon. The park protects a large block of lowland Atlantic coastal rainforest — one of the oldest, least-disturbed forest ecosystems in Africa — where it receives some of the highest rainfall on the continent, producing the dense, shaded, leaf-litter-choked pools that West African killifishes favour.

Water chemistry at the type locality is soft and acidic. FishBase records a pH of approximately 5.0 and hardness of around 0.6 dH — values consistent with water draining through deep forest-floor humus and leaf packs, with minimal buffering capacity. Temperature at the type locality is recorded at approximately 70 °F, reflecting the thermally buffered microclimate beneath a continuous forest canopy. The water is almost certainly tannin-stained and low in dissolved minerals, as is typical for coastal lowland forest pools in this part of West Africa.

Feeding

Fundulopanchax kamdemi is insectivorous in the wild, as documented by FishBase — a diet characteristic of the genus and of West African forest killifishes generally. The upturned mouth points to surface and near-surface foraging, where the fish targets small insects, mosquito larvae, aquatic invertebrates, and the terrestrial insects that fall onto still forest pools.

In the aquarium, F. kamdemi readily takes small live and frozen invertebrate foods: Drosophila fruit flies, bloodworm, Artemia, Grindal worm, and Tubifex all serve as dietary staples. A varied diet with live insects as the primary component maintains the males' vivid colouration and promotes reproductive condition. Like most killies, it will accept high-quality micro-pellets when hungry, but insect-based foods should constitute the bulk of the diet for long-term health.

Mating

Fundulopanchax kamdemi, like other members of the genus, is a non-annual killifish. The water in its Korup forest pools does not dry out seasonally on the predictable schedule that drives true annual diapause in savanna-zone species; instead, the pools remain permanent or semi-permanent, and the fish spawns on a continuous or near-continuous basis rather than in a single pre-desiccation event.

Males are persistently active courters, displaying their vivid red-stripe pattern and iridescent flanks to females and competing vigorously with rival males for spawning access. The mating system is polygynous: a dominant male will spawn with multiple females, and in a group aquarium hierarchy forms quickly. Females signal receptivity through posture and movement rather than colouration. Spawning embraces occur among fine vegetation, mops, or at the substrate surface, with eggs deposited one or a few at a time over an extended session.

Breeding

Fundulopanchax kamdemi is a substrate and plant spawner. Eggs are deposited singly in fine-leaved plants, spawning mops, or soft peat fibres at or near the substrate surface. The eggs are relatively tough and adhesive, clinging to the medium in which they are deposited. Incubation in water at approximately 70–75 °F takes around two to three weeks, with some variation depending on temperature.

Unlike true annuals, the eggs of F. kamdemi do not require a dry or damp-peat resting period to complete development, though they tolerate a degree of extended incubation in damp peat — a trait consistent with the semi-annual ecology of Fundulopanchax in habitats where pools may occasionally fluctuate. Hobbyists typically choose between two methods: leaving the eggs on mops in the breeding tank (removing fry as they appear) or collecting eggs from the mop and incubating them separately in small containers at the same temperature, which simplifies fry management.

Fry are tiny at hatching and require infusoria or commercial micro-foods for the first days before accepting baby brine shrimp nauplii. Growth is steady in warm, soft, slightly acidic water. Males begin to show colour as they approach sexual maturity, which occurs at seven months or older; experienced breeders note that F. gardneri and related Class 6 killies often produce better results when the fish are fully mature before being used as a breeding pair.

In the aquarium

Fundulopanchax kamdemi is a manageable and rewarding species for the specialist killifish hobbyist. A small, heavily planted or mop-equipped aquarium of 10–15 US gal suits a pair or trio (one male, two females); the male's intense aggression toward rival males means only one male per tank unless the aquarium is very large and heavily broken up with cover.

Soft, slightly acidic, clean water matches the wild habitat: target pH 5.5–6.5, hardness below 5 dH, and temperature around 70–75 °F. Filtration should be gentle — air-powered sponge filters are ideal, as they maintain water quality without creating flow that disrupts the surface-feeding behaviour or unsettles eggs. A dark substrate and floating plants or Indian almond leaves that tint the water amber replicate the shaded forest-pool environment and bring out the best colour in males.

The species is not found in the mainstream trade and is typically available only through specialist killifish societies, club auctions, and dedicated breeders who maintain club-registered strains. Its beauty and its endemic status in a single African national park make it a fish kept primarily by those with a serious interest in killifish conservation and captive-breeding programmes.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Fundulopanchax kamdemi as Least Concern (LC) in 2009, in an assessment authored by Moelants. The designation reflects the species' occurrence entirely within the boundaries of Korup National Park — a protected area with strong international conservation support — which provides a degree of legal shelter unavailable to killies occurring in unprotected habitats. The park's large size and high forest integrity also mean that the immediate habitat is in relatively good condition compared to the heavily degraded forest pools found outside protected areas elsewhere in coastal Cameroon.

Nevertheless, the species' extremely narrow range — known from only a single national park — represents a genuine long-term risk. Any habitat degradation within Korup, whether from illegal logging incursions, changes in hydrology driven by upstream deforestation, or climate-driven shifts in rainfall seasonality, could affect the shallow swampy pools that F. kamdemi depends on. Invasive mosquitofish (Gambusia spp.) have not been documented in Korup's interior forest pools but represent a standing threat to West African killifishes wherever water bodies become accessible to them.

The species is maintained in small numbers in the specialist killifish hobby through organisations such as the American Killifish Association, and some hobbyist collections function as informal insurance against wild population decline. Given the single-locality nature of this endemic, periodic reassessment of its IUCN status — and continued monitoring of its habitat within Korup — would be prudent.
