Taxonomy & naming
Fundulopanchax mirabilis was described by the Austrian killifish specialist Arthur C. Radda in 1970, with type material taken from what is now understood to be the Upper Cross River system or associated Mo drainage in south-western Cameroon. The authority parentheses in (Radda, 1970) reflect the standard ICZN convention for a name that has been transferred from its original combination since description; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records it under the valid genus Fundulopanchax.
The genus Fundulopanchax is a large, diverse assemblage of West and Central African killies that spans the entire Gulf of Guinea rainforest zone from Nigeria eastward into Cameroon and Gabon. Within the genus, F. mirabilis belongs to the informal grouping sometimes called the 'splendid killies' — species with elaborate male colour patterns and a broadly non-annual life history. The genus sits within the family Nothobranchiidae, the African killifishes.
In the killifish hobby the species is often encountered as Fundulopanchax aff. mirabilis, a label applied to various collection-locality strains whose precise taxonomic status relative to the type population has not been formally resolved. The American Killifish Association lists location variants from Takwai, Mbio, Nehemba, Bator, Nguti, Tinto, and Dagua, all within or close to the species' known Cameroonian range. This population-level diversity is ecologically real and of conservation relevance: each locality strain may represent a partially isolated lineage.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum standard length of 3 in for Fundulopanchax mirabilis, placing it among the mid-sized members of the genus. Like other Fundulopanchax, the species shows pronounced sexual dichromatism: males are vivid, with a body patterned in blue, red, and orange tones arranged in spots, blotches, or reticulations depending on the collection locality; the caudal fin is often elaborated with colour and may show extended rays in some populations. Females are substantially plainer, cryptically brown with little patterning.
The body form is typical of the genus: moderately elongate and slightly laterally compressed, with a terminal mouth adapted for surface and mid-water foraging on small invertebrates. The dorsal and anal fins are set well back on the body, a characteristic arrangement in Nothobranchiidae.
Habitat
In the wild, Fundulopanchax mirabilis inhabits brooks and small streams within the West Central African rainforest biome of south-western Cameroon, specifically in the Upper Cross and Mo drainage systems (FishBase). These are typically shallow, slow-moving to gently flowing forest watercourses with abundant overhanging riparian vegetation, leaf litter on the substrate, and water stained amber-brown by dissolved tannins and humic acids from decaying plant material.
Water chemistry in this habitat is characteristically soft and mildly acidic. FishBase records a pH range of 6.0–6.5, hardness of 1–6 °dH, and temperature of 72–77 °F — cool, very soft, slightly acidic water typical of the West African forest-stream environment. The benthopelagic lifestyle noted by FishBase indicates the fish occupies the water column from the bottom upward, hunting among leaf litter and fine debris as well as at the surface.
Feeding
Fundulopanchax mirabilis is a carnivore, feeding primarily on small invertebrates in the wild. In the forest streams it inhabits, the diet likely includes small aquatic insects, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and any other invertebrates small enough to be taken at the surface or in the water column. The terminal, upward-angled mouth is well suited to surface foraging, and Fundulopanchax generally take a high proportion of aerial insects that fall onto the water surface.
In captivity, the species accepts a broad range of small live and frozen foods — Drosophila, bloodworm, Artemia, Moina, small Tubifex, and similar items form the staple diet of most hobbyists maintaining this fish. Dry foods may be accepted once the fish is settled, though most keepers rely heavily on live or frozen foods to maintain condition and colour in the males.
Mating
Fundulopanchax mirabilis is a polyphyric spawner — FishBase records a mating system in which one male courts and spawns with multiple females. Males are brightly coloured and display actively, and competition between males in groups is intense; in captivity a single dominant male will harass subordinates unless the aquarium provides sufficient cover and broken sightlines. The non-annual life strategy means that unlike the strict annual killifishes, F. mirabilis does not require a complete dry season and diapausing eggs to complete its reproductive cycle.
Courtship follows the typical Fundulopanchax pattern: the male displays with flared fins and intense colouration, driving the female toward the substrate or a clump of fine-leaved plants. Spawning takes place in or around fine vegetation or soft substrate at or near the bottom. Eggs are deposited individually or in small batches and are adhesive, attaching to plant material or burrowing loosely into peat or fine substrate particles.
Breeding
Fundulopanchax mirabilis is best described as a semi-annual or facultative substrate-spawner. Unlike strict annual killifishes of the genus Nothobranchius, it does not depend on complete desiccation and a true diapause to hatch; however, eggs show some tolerance of extended or partially damp incubation and in the wild the water table of forest streams can fluctuate seasonally. In the hobby, the species is typically bred using a peat moss substrate or spawning mops placed on or near the bottom of a small tank.
Eggs deposited in peat can be collected by squeezing the peat gently and storing the moist mass in a sealed bag or container at room temperature for several weeks to a couple of months before rehydrating — a practice borrowed from annual killi husbandry that works well for this semi-tolerant species. Alternatively, eggs can simply be left in water and allowed to hatch in situ. Incubation in water at 72–75 °F typically yields fry in three to four weeks. Fry are small at hatching and require appropriately tiny first foods — freshly hatched Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, or paramecia — before graduating to larger live foods as they grow.
In the aquarium
In the hobby Fundulopanchax mirabilis is kept primarily by killifish specialists, and FishBase flags the species as difficult to maintain in the aquarium — a caution that reflects its requirements for cool, very soft, acidic water (pH 6.0–6.5, dH 1–6, 72–77 °F) that many general hobbyists find harder to provide than neutral or slightly alkaline conditions. A small, well-planted species tank or a dedicated killi breeding setup suits it well: a tank of 10–15 US gal per pair or trio, with peat-filtered or RO-reconstituted water, dim lighting, and abundant fine-leaved plants or spawning mops.
The American Killifish Association maintains a photo gallery of multiple collection variants, and the species is available through killi specialist clubs and AKA affiliates, often traded as specific locality strains (e.g. Takwai, Nguti, Nehemba). Aquarists keeping multiple strains should take care to prevent cross-breeding, as the locality variants may represent biologically meaningful population differences. Water quality and temperature stability are more important than specific chemistry targets within the recommended range; the fish do not tolerate warm or hard water well. Males are best kept one per tank unless the setup is large enough to allow retreat and visual separation.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Fundulopanchax mirabilis as Data Deficient (DD) in 2009 (Moelants, T. 2010, assessment ID 6635260). Data Deficient status reflects an absence of sufficient information on distribution, population size, and trend rather than a judgement that the species is secure — and for a fish confined to the Upper Cross and Mo drainage systems in south-western Cameroon, the concern is real.
South-western Cameroon sits within a biodiversity hotspot under sustained pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion (including oil palm and rubber cultivation), logging, and road construction. The small forest brooks that F. mirabilis inhabits are sensitive to canopy removal, sedimentation, and water-chemistry changes caused by land-use conversion in the catchment. The species' multiple locality-differentiated strains suggest a naturally fragmented distribution of small, semi-isolated populations, each of which would be vulnerable to local extirpation. A formal assessment with field survey data is needed to establish whether any population warrants a threatened listing under IUCN criteria.
