Taxonomy & naming
Fundulopanchax puerzli was first described by Arthur Christian Radda and Jørgen J. Scheel in 1974, with type material drawn from tributaries of the Wouri river basin in western Cameroon. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the valid combination as Fundulopanchax puerzli (Radda & Scheel, 1974), placed within the large West and Central African killifish genus Fundulopanchax in the family Nothobranchiidae. The authority appears in parentheses because the species was originally described under a different generic arrangement before being transferred to Fundulopanchax.
The genus Fundulopanchax is sometimes treated as a subgenus of Fundulosoma or split into several groups; current consensus under the Catalog of Fishes retains Fundulopanchax as a valid genus encompassing the majority of the Nigerian–Cameroonian non-annual or semi-annual forest killifishes. Within the genus, F. puerzli is not assigned to a formal species group in the same way as the gardneri or sjoestedti complexes, though it is ecologically and biogeographically linked to other lower-elevation Cameroonian forest species.
The species epithet honours Eduard Pürzl, an Austrian aquarist, collector, and underwater photographer who was instrumental in importing and distributing West African killifishes in European hobbyist circles during the 1970s and 1980s. The American Killifish Association records that at least 25 articles in the Journal of the American Killifish Association (JAKA) have covered this species, reflecting the sustained hobbyist interest it has attracted since its original collection.
Morphology
Fundulopanchax puerzli is a moderately sized killifish, reaching a maximum of 3 in total length according to FishBase, with typical aquarium specimens measuring 3 in, as documented by British Killifish Association contributors. The body plan is the laterally compressed, elongate-fusiform shape typical of the genus, with a slightly upturned mouth adapted for surface and mid-water feeding.
Males display a striking colouration: the flanks are greenish-blue to turquoise, overlaid with vivid red vertical splashes or bars, the dorsum is olive, and the gill covers carry red markings. The fins bear red spotting or patterning. This is a relatively flamboyant species within the genus. Females are notably more colourful than is typical for Fundulopanchax — the British Killifish Association notes that females of F. puerzli carry a beautiful colour pattern, setting them apart from the commonly drab females of related species. This makes the species particularly attractive to hobbyists who want to maintain mixed-sex groups in which both sexes contribute visual interest.
Habitat
Fundulopanchax puerzli is a Lower Guinea endemic, native to the Henda, Nkwoh, and Wouri river systems of western Cameroon. Collection localities documented in the hobbyist literature include Yabassi, Dibeng, Ndibeng, Ndokama, the Bonepoupa-Yabassi area, and the vicinity of the Douala-Edea road crossing — all within the lowland and sub-montane rainforest zone of the coastal plain. The Wouri estuary lies downstream of the main collection region; the species inhabits the middle and upper catchment in permanently forested terrain.
FishBase classifies the habitat as swamps and the shallow, swampy margins of brooks and small streams within intact lowland rainforest. The British Killifish Association records a biotope of a small tributary stream of the Wouri, measured at 1°dGH hardness, pH 6.4, and a temperature of 78 °F — typical of the soft, slightly acidic, tannin-influenced water of a Cameroonian forest stream. FishBase gives the broader tolerance range as pH 6.0–7.0, hardness 5–8 dH, and temperature 70–75 °F. Sympatric species at the same sites include Fundulopanchax riggenbachi and Epiplatys sexfasciatus, both characteristically West African forest killifishes.
Despite the non-seasonal classification from FishBase — reflecting that the Wouri catchment is not subject to complete annual drying at the regional scale — local microhabitats such as small forest pools and the shallow margins of streams do experience seasonal fluctuation in water level, which appears to influence the reproductive behaviour of wild populations.
Feeding
Like all Fundulopanchax, F. puerzli is a carnivore in the wild, feeding on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, zooplankton, and small surface-drifting prey — in its forest-stream habitat. The slightly upturned mouth is adapted for picking prey from or near the water surface, though the species also forages through mid-water and along the substrate margin in shallow areas.
In captivity the species is easily fed. Live and frozen foods are readily accepted: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), tubifex, and similar invertebrate foods form the core diet. The species will also take high-quality dried foods if these are offered from the outset or after acclimatisation. For conditioning breeding adults and maintaining full colour expression in males, regular feeding with live or frozen invertebrate prey is recommended over reliance on dried foods alone.
Mating
Fundulopanchax puerzli is a substrate spawner whose mating behaviour is characteristic of the genus: males court females with lateral displays and fin-spreading, the vivid red splashes and turquoise flanks serving as both mate-attraction and rival-assessment signals. Spawning occurs close to or at the substrate, with eggs deposited individually into soft bottom material, leaf litter, or peat. The species lacks the dramatic jumping and chasing of some annual killifishes; courtship is comparatively deliberate.
The British Killifish Association describes the species as appearing to behave as an annual fish in the wild, despite the non-seasonal classification of its river system — a pattern consistent with the semi-annual Fundulopanchax life-history strategy, in which eggs are adapted to tolerate periods of reduced moisture even if full diapause is not obligatory. Males compete for access to females, and in aquarium settings multiple males will display persistently; the attractive female colouration of this species, unusual in the genus, suggests that female choice may play a meaningful role in mate selection, though this has not been formally studied.
Breeding
Fundulopanchax puerzli is a bottom and substrate spawner with a flexible incubation strategy — one of its most practically useful features for hobbyists. The British Killifish Association documents two viable approaches: water incubation, in which eggs are left in water at 72 °F and hatch in 30–32 days; and dry storage, in which eggs are removed from the substrate and stored slightly moist at 72 °F for 7–8 weeks, a technique that reportedly produces stronger fry. FishBase records the incubation period as approximately 2 months under standard conditions. This dual-mode tolerance is characteristic of the semi-annual Fundulopanchax reproductive strategy, where eggs are adapted for survival in substrate that may partially dry but do not require the full desiccation diapause of true annual species.
Eggs are laid singly into peat, fine sand, or the interstices of mop fibres placed near or at the substrate. Spawning is a near-daily activity in well-conditioned pairs rather than a single seasonal mass-spawning event. Fry are relatively large for a killifish and accept newly hatched Artemia nauplii as a first food from the outset, making early rearing straightforward compared with some annual species. Maintaining the parents on high-quality live or frozen foods before and during the breeding period improves egg output and fertilisation rates.
In the wild, the apparent annual behaviour noted by BKA collectors suggests that even where the main river channel retains water year-round, the small tributary pools and swampy margins that F. puerzli occupies may partially dry seasonally, selecting for egg survival through at least a brief damp resting phase.
In the aquarium
Fundulopanchax puerzli is a rewarding aquarium killifish for hobbyists who can provide the soft, slightly acidic water it prefers and the appropriate diet. A species or colony tank is ideal: a well-planted aquarium of 15–20 US gal with a dark substrate, floating plants or surface cover to subdue light, and driftwood or leaf litter to replicate the forest-stream environment. The dim, tannin-stained conditions bring out full colour in males and encourage spawning behaviour. Water parameters should be maintained within the range of pH 6.0–7.0, hardness below 10 dH, and temperature 70–77 °F, though the species tolerates modest variation.
In community settings the species can be kept with small, peaceful West African fish — small tetras, dwarf Corydoras, or other killifishes of similar size — provided the water chemistry requirements overlap. Multiple males can be maintained together if sufficient visual cover is provided, though persistent fighting in a small tank will stress subordinate males and reduce their colouration. Females should outnumber males to distribute male attention.
The species has attracted sustained hobbyist interest: the American Killifish Association records 25 JAKA articles on F. puerzli, and the British Killifish Association maintains dedicated care notes. Strain maintenance and exchange through killifish associations are the principal means by which captive populations are kept genetically healthy, since collection from wild Cameroonian populations is difficult and infrequent.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Fundulopanchax puerzli as Least Concern in February 2009 (published 2010), noting an unknown population trend and a range restricted to the Lower Guinea biodiversity hotspot of western Cameroon. The Wouri river basin and its tributaries lie in one of the most rapidly deforesting regions of Central Africa: the coastal lowlands around Douala and extending inland toward Yabassi have experienced significant habitat loss to subsistence agriculture, logging, and expanding agricultural estates over the past three decades.
As a species confined to shallow, swampy forest-stream margins and small tributary pools, F. puerzli is inherently vulnerable to the degradation of riparian forest cover. Deforestation raises water temperatures, increases sedimentation, alters the chemistry of naturally soft, acid streams, and eliminates the leaf litter and forest canopy that structure its microhabitat. Unlike large-river species, forest-pool killifishes cannot track connectivity across degraded landscapes; local extirpation in a modified catchment is essentially permanent.
The LC assessment predates the most acute phase of forest loss in the Lower Guinea region and has not been formally updated since 2009. The population trend is recorded as unknown, and given the trajectory of habitat change in the Wouri lowlands, a precautionary approach to the species' conservation status is warranted. Captive populations held by killifish associations in Europe and North America represent an important insurance collection for the species, even if re-introduction capacity into protected habitat in Cameroon remains limited.
