Fundulopanchax scheeli is a small, jewel-coloured killifish endemic to the coastal rainforest streams and ponds of the lower Cross River system in southeastern Nigeria and the adjacent Ndian River drainage in southwestern Cameroon. Reaching about 2.5 in, males carry a mosaic of iridescent green and red that has earned the fish the hobbyist nickname 'emerald killifish'. Unlike the seasonal annual killies of savanna habitats, F. scheeli inhabits permanent forest water and spawns continuously on mops or soft substrate — behaviour that makes it unusually approachable for aquarists new to the genus. The species is assessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, driven by accelerating deforestation and habitat loss across its narrow West African coastal-forest range.

Taxonomy & naming

Fundulopanchax scheeli was described by the Austrian killifish specialist Arthur C. Radda in 1970. The authority is presented in parentheses because the species was originally placed in a different genus before being transferred to Fundulopanchax. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Fundulopanchax scheeli (Radda, 1970), placing it in the family Nothobranchiidae — the African egg-laying toothcarps. Fundulopanchax is a West and Central African genus encompassing a diversity of non-annual and semi-annual killies, distinct from the strictly annual genera such as Nothobranchius.

The species epithet scheeli honours Jørgen Georg Scheel, the influential Danish killifish biologist and taxonomist whose extensive fieldwork and writings shaped the modern understanding of West African Aphyosemion-group killies. The British Killifish Association records the holotype as 2 in total length with a body length of 1.5 in, and notes a distinctive open pattern of lateral-line organs across the front top of the head as a diagnostic morphological character. Scheel's original range note placed the species in the southern Nigeria (Niger Delta region), though subsequent collections and the current understanding now centre on the lower Cross River and the Ndian River drainage across the Nigerian–Cameroonian border.

Morphology

F. scheeli is a moderately slender killifish reaching approximately 2.5 in total length (FishBase) to 2.5 in standard length (Seriously Fish), with males substantially more colourful than females. Males display a vivid ground colour of iridescent blue-green to emerald on the flanks, overlain with red or orange spotting and reticulation that intensifies toward the posterior. The unpaired fins are coloured and patterned, often with blue-green iridescence and red or orange margins. The overall impression is of a densely saturated, jewel-like fish befitting the genus.

Females are considerably plainer: a beige to olive-brown body, smaller fins, and an absence of the male's iridescent patterning. This pronounced sexual dimorphism is typical of Fundulopanchax. The British Killifish Association records head length at 22–27% of body length and body depth at 19–23% of body length, indicating a moderately deep, compact body plan. The open pattern of lateral-line organs on the frontal region of the head is a noted diagnostic feature separating this species from related Fundulopanchax.

Habitat

F. scheeli inhabits small streams and ponds embedded within coastal lowland rainforest in its narrow endemic range — the lower Cross River system of southeastern Nigeria and the Ndian River drainage in southwestern Cameroon. FishBase characterises the habitat as permanent, non-seasonal water, consistent with the stable, shaded environment provided by intact West African coastal rainforest rather than the seasonally drying savanna pools occupied by annual killifish.

Water in these forest habitats is typically soft and acidic, stained by tannins from leaf litter and decaying wood. Seriously Fish records temperature of 73–79 °F, pH around 6.0, and hardness of approximately 3 (moderately soft). The forested canopy moderates temperature fluctuations, and the soft, low-conductivity water reflects minimal mineral input — conditions found throughout the Guineo-Congolian forest zone of West Africa. Notably, this is permanent water: unlike the seasonal pool species in the same region, F. scheeli does not experience regular desiccation of its habitat, which is reflected directly in its non-annual reproductive strategy.

Feeding

In the wild, F. scheeli feeds on the small invertebrates available in forest stream habitats — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and terrestrial invertebrates that fall onto the water surface. The species is an opportunistic micropredator, as is typical for Fundulopanchax and related West African killies.

In the aquarium, the species is easily fed. Seriously Fish notes acceptance of small live or frozen foods such as daphnia and bloodworm, as well as quality flake or micro-pellets. A diet weighted toward live or frozen meaty items keeps males in the best colour. Because of the small adult size, food items should be appropriately scaled — large frozen bloodworm is taken, but very small live foods such as freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and microworm are valuable supplements, particularly for conditioning spawning pairs.

Mating

Fundulopanchax scheeli is a non-annual killifish: it does not go through a diapause phase and does not require eggs to be dried or incubated in damp peat. In its permanent forest-stream habitat, individuals survive year-round and spawn continuously when conditions are suitable, without the hard dry-season die-off that characterises annual species.

Males are actively competitive and display vigorously to females and rival males, spreading fins and intensifying colour to signal fitness. Courtship involves the male approaching and displaying laterally alongside the female before driving her into vegetation or substrate to deposit eggs. Because the species spawns on both mops and directly into soft substrate in the aquarium (killi.co.uk reports approximately 60% of eggs deposited on spawning mops, 40% laid or settled in long-term tank substrate), there is flexibility in the exact site used, but no strict pairing or nesting behaviour. Spawning is diffuse and ongoing rather than concentrated in a single event.

Breeding

F. scheeli is among the more straightforward Fundulopanchax to breed. Both mop-based collection and long-term substrate incubation work reliably. In the mop method, fine-leaved spawning mops are placed in the tank; eggs are picked from the mop every few days and incubated on damp peat or tissue, or placed into shallow water, at around 68–73 °F until they eye-up and hatch. Incubation typically takes several weeks; the killi.co.uk profile records a preference for moderately soft, acidic water (pH 6.5) during incubation.

In a long-term planted or heavily decorated species tank, fry simply appear among the adults — confirming the species' tolerance for low-level predation pressure on its own eggs, or at least the capacity for enough fry to survive to detectable size under normal conditions (reported by the Aquarium Coop BAP report). Breeding pairs or trios (one male, two females) are the conventional approach; multiple males in a small space leads to stress and fin damage. Fry accept newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii from the start and grow steadily at temperatures in the mid-twenties Celsius.

In the aquarium

F. scheeli is considered an easy killifish — unusual in a genus that includes some demanding species — and a reasonable entry point for hobbyists exploring West African killis for the first time. A well-planted tank of 10–15 US gal or larger is sufficient for a pair or trio; the species is not strongly territorial and trios work well. The tank should be covered tightly: like all killies, F. scheeli is an accomplished jumper.

Water quality should replicate the soft, slightly acidic conditions of coastal-forest streams: temperature 73–79 °F, pH 5.5–6.5, soft to moderately soft. Regular partial water changes are important for long-term health and colour. Dark substrate, floating plants, and peat filtration mimic the natural environment and typically intensify male colouration. Tankmates, if any, should be small, peaceful, and suited to soft, warm, acidic water; in practice, species tanks are preferred, as the male's colour and behaviour are most evident without competition from other fish. The species has been widely kept in the hobby and is generally available through killifish societies and specialist breeders.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Fundulopanchax scheeli as Critically Endangered (CR), with the assessment dated 5 September 2019. The primary driver is habitat loss: the lower Cross River basin and the Ndian River drainage of southwestern Cameroon sit within one of the most biodiverse and most rapidly deforested sections of the West African coastal rainforest. Agricultural expansion, logging, and oil-palm cultivation have reduced and fragmented the forested stream habitats on which this species depends. Unlike annual killies that can persist as dormant eggs in dry soil between seasons, F. scheeli requires permanent, intact forest water — making it acutely sensitive to the drainage and clearing of its habitat.

The species' endemic range is extremely restricted: the lower Cross River system and adjacent Ndian drainage span a relatively small geographic area straddling the Nigeria–Cameroon border. This means that regional deforestation events can affect a substantial proportion of the global population simultaneously. There is no indication that the species has been formally protected in situ, and its survival in the wild depends on the preservation of intact coastal-forest remnants in this part of West Africa. It is maintained in the aquarium hobby through killifish societies, providing an insurance population, but captive populations cannot substitute for wild habitat protection in the long run.

The Critically Endangered designation places F. scheeli among the most threatened freshwater fish of the Guineo-Congolian forest zone, and conservation efforts for the broader lower Cross River ecosystem — a global biodiversity hotspot that also supports Cross River gorillas and Nigerian-Cameroon chimpanzees — would directly benefit this species.
