Fundulopanchax spoorenbergi was described by Berkenkamp in 1976. The type locality lies in the Calabar–Mamfe area straddling the Nigeria–Cameroon border — a lowland forest region whose drainages feed into the Cross River system. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & van der Laan) treats the name as valid within the genus Fundulopanchax, the West and Central African aplocheiloid killifishes belonging to the family Nothobranchiidae.
Fundulopanchax is a large and taxonomically active genus. The species has historically been co-imported and, at times, confused with F. ndianus, a neighbouring species from the same border zone; the two are distinguished by colour pattern and collection locality rather than by obvious morphological discontinuity. The 2019 IUCN assessment specifically flagged this co-importation as a complicating factor in resolving the species' true distribution. The authority is cited in parentheses — (Berkenkamp, 1976) — following standard nomenclatural practice to indicate the original generic placement differed from the current one.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum total length of 3 in for F. spoorenbergi, making it a moderately sized member of its genus — robust and relatively deep-bodied compared to slender forest killifish. The species is described in hobbyist literature as colourful, with males carrying the vivid red and blue patterning characteristic of Fundulopanchax killies from the Niger Delta and Cross River forest zone.
As in virtually all aplocheiloid killifishes, males are considerably more intensely coloured and slightly larger-bodied than females, which are cryptically brownish to olive with little ornamentation. The fins of the male are extended and patterned; the caudal fin in particular carries the pigment bands and edging typical of the genus. Females develop a rounded abdomen when gravid. Habitat
The species is a lowland forest killifish native to south-eastern Nigeria — specifically the Owom locality near the Mamfe region — and the immediately adjacent Cameroonian border zone. This is ecologically the Cross River–Manyu drainage, characterised by dense rainforest, seasonal rainfall, and a network of small streams, forest pools, and boggy clearings whose water tables fluctuate with the wet–dry seasons.

The assessors specifically noted that the species is often co-imported with F. ndianus from the Nigerian–Cameroon border, which has made it difficult to determine where populations of each species actually begin and end. The lowland forest zone of south-eastern Nigeria is under substantial human pressure: agricultural expansion, logging, and oil-sector infrastructure in the Niger Delta and Cross River region have reduced and fragmented forest cover. Small, slow-moving forest streams and pools of the kind F. spoorenbergi inhabits are disproportionately affected by catchment deforestation, which increases siltation, reduces canopy shading, and alters the water table dynamics on which semi-annual killies depend. Introduction of invasive mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) has been documented as a threat to small killifish in parts of West Africa.
