Taxonomy & naming
Cynolebias porosus was described by the Austrian zoologist Franz Steindachner in 1876, with specimens from the São Francisco river drainage of Brazil. It is placed in the genus Cynolebias Valenciennes, 1840, the founding genus of the South American annual killifish clade — a group of small-to-medium cyprinodontiform fishes distributed across seasonal wetlands of eastern and central South America. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Cynolebias porosus Steindachner, 1876.
The genus Cynolebias has undergone substantial revision since the mid-twentieth century, with many former members redistributed to genera such as Austrolebias, Simpsonichthys, and Leptolebias as phylogenetic analyses have refined understanding of annual killifish relationships. Cynolebias in the current restricted sense is largely centred on the Atlantic drainages of eastern Brazil, and C. porosus is one of its larger species. Its specific epithet porosus is Latin for 'porous' or 'full of pores', likely an allusion to the prominent sensory pit-lines of the lateral line system visible on the head.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum total length of 6 in for Cynolebias porosus, making it one of the larger members of its genus. As in other Cynolebias, the body is moderately robust and slightly laterally compressed, with a rounded or truncated caudal fin typical of annual killifish. The head is broad and somewhat flattened dorsally, with a large, upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water prey capture.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced, as is characteristic of the South American annual killifish as a family. Males display vivid iridescent colouration — a body pattern of metallic blue-green spots or ocelli on a dark ground, the markings intensifying during courtship and display. Females are cryptically patterned in pale brown to olive with subtle spotting, an adaptation that affords camouflage while occupying breeding substrate. Females are also noticeably smaller and more rounded in the belly when gravid.
Habitat
Cynolebias porosus is an endemic of the São Francisco river basin, known from the middle and lower reaches of the drainage in Bahia and Pernambuco states, Brazil. Its habitat is the seasonal, shallow pools and temporary ponds that form on the floodplain during the rainy season and disappear entirely during the dry season — environments characterised by soft, often muddy substrates rich in organic detritus, the peat-like material in which the eggs are deposited.
FishBase records a temperature range of 72–86 °F, reflecting the warm, often sun-heated conditions of these exposed seasonal pools in Brazil's northeastern interior. Water chemistry in São Francisco floodplain pools tends toward soft and moderately acidic, though seasonal variation and evaporative concentration can shift parameters considerably over the life of a pool. The benthopelagic, non-migratory lifestyle of the adults reflects the bounded, fishbowl nature of their temporary home — once a pool forms, individuals live out their entire above-ground existence within it before the pool dries and only the buried eggs persist.
Feeding
Like most annual killifish, Cynolebias porosus is a predatory carnivore, taking invertebrates, small crustaceans, insect larvae, and other small aquatic organisms available in the temporary pools it occupies. The large upturned mouth is adapted for ambush predation at and near the surface film, where invertebrates falling onto the water or emerging from the substrate concentrate. In a seasonal pool with a limited food web, efficient and opportunistic foraging is essential — the fish must grow, mature, spawn, and complete its life cycle within a single rainy season.
In aquarium conditions, Cynolebias porosus accepts live and frozen foods readily. Bloodworm, Daphnia, Artemia, and small earthworms are suitable staples. Prepared pellets may be accepted by established individuals. FishBase notes this species is very difficult to maintain in aquarium conditions, suggesting that dietary variety and appropriate food size — given its large adult size — are especially important for keeping it in good health.
Mating
Cynolebias porosus follows the annual killifish breeding pattern: substrate-diving courtship and spawning in soft bottom sediment. In seasonal pools, the brief window of availability — a few weeks to a few months of water, depending on rainfall — drives accelerated sexual development and intense reproductive behaviour. Males establish and defend territories within the pool, displaying vivid iridescent colouration to attract females and deter rival males.
Courtship involves the male orienting alongside or beneath the female, both fish arching and pressing together before diving simultaneously into the substrate. This dive-spawning behaviour deposits a single fertilised egg deep enough in the mud or peat to survive the pool's evaporation. The pair surface and may repeat the sequence many times over a spawning session, distributing eggs at intervals rather than depositing a mass clutch. Competition between males is vigorous, and the conspicuous sexual dichromatism — brilliant male versus cryptic female — reflects strong sexual selection operating over the compressed annual life cycle.
Breeding
The eggs of Cynolebias porosus are buried in the substrate and pass the dry season in diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development that allows survival without free water. As documented in research on annual killifish eggs by the American Killifish Association, annual killi embryos undergo multiple discrete diapause periods before completing development, a mechanism that both synchronises hatching with the return of rain and provides a hedge against unpredictable wet-season timing. FishBase records an incubation period of 5–7 months for this species, consistent with a dry-season duration of that length across its range in northeastern Brazil.
In the aquarium, the standard approach mirrors the natural cycle. Spawning pairs are provided with a deep layer of peat, coir, or fine, slightly moist soil as substrate. After a spawning period of several weeks, the substrate containing the eggs is removed, lightly wrung to squeeze out excess water, and stored sealed in a plastic bag or container at room temperature for the diapause period — typically 3–6 months. The substrate is then re-wetted with soft, slightly acidic water, and hatching follows within days to weeks. Fry are large enough at hatching to accept small Artemia nauplii immediately and grow rapidly. Given the species' large adult size of up to 6 in, grow-out space is an important consideration — adults require more room than the small annual killifish more commonly kept in the hobby.
In the aquarium
FishBase explicitly rates Cynolebias porosus as very difficult to maintain in aquarium conditions — a caution that distinguishes it from the easier annual killifish popular in the hobby. Its large adult size (to 6 in), specific water and temperature requirements, and the need to replicate the complete annual cycle with a mandatory diapause phase all demand an experienced keeper committed to the species' particular husbandry. It is not a beginner fish and is not suited to a community aquarium.
Dedicated killifish hobbyists working with this species typically maintain pairs or trios in species-only tanks of at least 15–20 US gal, with a deep spawning substrate, subdued lighting, and water in the soft-acidic range at 72–82 °F. Regular partial water changes and excellent filtration are important — in a temporary pool the fish can escape deteriorating water quality by exploiting the entire pool, and replicating that dynamic in a fixed tank requires attentive maintenance. The American Killifish Association maintains a species profile for C. porosus and is the primary hobbyist resource for sourcing eggs, obtaining care guidance, and connecting with breeders experienced with this demanding species.
The rewards for the specialist keeper are considerable: a large, brilliantly coloured male in full display is among the more impressive sights in the annual killifish hobby, and successfully hatching a new generation from stored peat — watching fry appear from apparently dry substrate — remains one of the more remarkable experiences the group offers.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Cynolebias porosus as Least Concern in May 2022 (assessment date 18 May 2022). The species is endemic to the middle and lower São Francisco river drainage in Bahia and Pernambuco states, Brazil — a basin that has seen substantial agricultural development, including expansion of irrigated fruit farming and row crops. The IUCN assessment notes that expansion of agriculture and fruit farming constitutes the primary threat to the species, through conversion of the seasonal floodplain pools and wetlands on which it depends for reproduction.
The assessment also notes that no conservation programs for this species exist in Brazil, and that studies on subpopulation structure, population trends, and basic biology are needed before a more refined assessment can be made. For a seasonal-pool endemic whose entire life cycle is tied to ephemeral wetlands that are actively targeted for drainage and conversion, the Least Concern rating reflects current data rather than confirmed security. The combination of restricted geographic range, habitat specificity, and growing agricultural pressure warrants continued monitoring. Hobbyist breeding populations maintained through the American Killifish Association and affiliated clubs represent a secondary reservoir of genetic material, though ex-situ collections are not a substitute for the conservation of the seasonal wetland habitats of the São Francisco valley.
