Hypsolebias nielseni is a South American annual killifish endemic to the floodplain pools of the São Francisco River basin in Minas Gerais, Brazil, where it lives out its entire life cycle in shallow, reddish, acidic seasonal waters that dry completely for five to nine months of every year. Like all members of its genus, it survives the dry season only as buried, drought-resistant eggs locked in developmental diapause — a remarkable reproductive strategy that ties this small, vividly coloured fish to the rhythm of its unpredictable savanna landscape. Taxonomy & naming

Hypsolebias nielseni was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 2004, with the type locality given as the floodplains of the São Francisco River near Pirapora, Estado de Minas Gerais, Brazil, at an altitude of approximately 1640 ft. The authority is cited in parentheses because the name was originally placed in a different generic arrangement; under the current treatment accepted by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Van der Laan), the valid combination is Hypsolebias nielseni (Costa, 2004).

The genus Hypsolebias was first proposed as a subgenus of Simpsonichthys and was elevated to full generic rank by Costa in 2006. The elevation transferred a number of South American annual killifish species — many from the São Francisco basin — out of Simpsonichthys and into the newly recognised genus. It Rains Fishes and the killifish literature record H. nielseni as part of this Hypsolebias reassignment, reflecting the ongoing refinement of Neotropical aplocheiloid systematics as molecular and morphological studies have clarified relationships within the family Rivulidae.

The specific epithet nielseni honours Dalton T. B. Nielsen, a recognised figure in killifish research and hobbyist circles, following the tradition in Neotropical ichthyology of naming new annual killifish species for collectors and naturalists who contributed specimens or field data. The species has no widely accepted English common name in the scientific literature or mainstream hobby trade.

Morphology

Hypsolebias nielseni is a small, laterally compressed annual killifish typical in body plan of the South American rivulid radiation. Males display the bold colouration that characterises the genus: vivid iridescent pigmentation on the flanks, typically in combinations of blue, green, and red depending on individual and population variation, set against a dark base that intensifies the display effect. Fins in males tend to be elaborated with colour and extension relative to the functional minimum. Females are cryptically coloured, as is universal in annual killifish, with drab brownish or olive flanks that afford camouflage in the darkly tinted pool water.

The body form follows the robust, slightly deepened Hypsolebias profile, with the dorsal fin positioned posteriorly and the anal and dorsal fins roughly symmetrical in placement — an arrangement shared across the South American annual killifish genera and linked to the pair's synchronised dive-and-spawn mechanics. Scales are relatively large and cycloid. Precise meristic data for H. nielseni are available in Costa's original description; no independently verified maximum standard length is reported in the sources available, and rather than speculate a figure is not given here.

Habitat

Hypsolebias nielseni is known from the São Francisco River floodplain near Pirapora, Minas Gerais, Brazil, at approximately 1640 ft altitude — a seasonally inundated cerrado (Brazilian savanna) landscape where shallow, ephemeral pools form during the wet season and dry completely each year. Field surveys of annual killifish habitat in the São Francisco basin describe the pools as dark, reddish, slightly acidic water bodies reaching depths of only 19.5–23.5 in at their maximum. This characteristic colouration reflects dissolved organic matter — tannins and humic acids — leached from the surrounding vegetation and accumulated leaf litter.

The hydrological regime is strictly seasonal. Pools fill with the return of rainfall, typically from September or October through to April, and then desiccate completely from approximately May onward, with the dry period lasting five to nine months. During this phase no surface water remains at the type locality, and the fish population exists solely as diapause eggs buried in the substrate. The surrounding cerrado biome is characterised by alternating wet and dry seasons, with the rainfall driving both pool formation and the reproductive cycle of the fish.

Feeding

In the wild, Hypsolebias nielseni almost certainly feeds opportunistically on the invertebrate fauna of its ephemeral pool habitat — small crustaceans, aquatic insect larvae, and microcrustaceans (copepods, cladocerans, ostracods) that colonise or persist in seasonal pools during the wet phase. This is the feeding ecology documented broadly for South American annual killifish in the São Francisco basin and is consistent with the short, high-intensity growing season that annual species experience.

In the aquarium, H. nielseni responds well to small live and frozen invertebrate foods — Artemia nauplii and adults, Daphnia, Moina, and chironomid larvae (bloodworm) are appropriate staples. Small, high-quality dried foods accepted by rivulids may supplement the diet but should not form the sole ration, as the fish is adapted to the nutritionally rich invertebrate prey of its native pools. Because the adult life span under annual conditions is short, maintaining condition through varied, protein-rich feeding supports both colour development and reproductive output.

Mating

Like all annual killifish in the São Francisco basin, Hypsolebias nielseni is a substrate-spawning species whose entire mating system is built around the ephemeral pool cycle. Spawning takes place during the wet season, when the pool is full and the fish are in peak condition, and is driven by the urgency of a life history in which the adults must reproduce before the pool disappears. Males display intensely to females using their iridescent lateral colouration — raising fins, spreading the body laterally, and positioning themselves directly alongside or beneath the female to draw her toward the substrate.

When a pair is ready to spawn, they align side-by-side and dive together into the soft pool substrate — the peat, mud, or organic detritus layer at the bottom — burying themselves partially or fully for the brief moment of egg deposition and fertilisation. This paired plunge-dive is the defining spawning behaviour of peat-spawning annual killifish and contrasts sharply with the plant-spawning and mouthbrooding strategies of other killifish groups. A single dive deposits only a few eggs; pairs repeat the sequence many times over the course of a spawning session and across the season.

Breeding

Eggs deposited in the substrate by Hypsolebias nielseni are encased in tough, drought-resistant chorions and are left entirely without parental attention. As the pool begins to dry, the eggs enter diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development in which metabolic activity is suspended and the embryo can survive desiccation for months. Research on annual killifish egg biology has shown that eggs may pass through multiple distinct diapause phases (diapause I, II, and III) before completing development, and that the timing of hatching is flexible: a population of eggs from the same clutch may not all hatch simultaneously, spreading the risk of failed rains across individual embryos.

Hatching is triggered by re-wetting when the seasonal rains return. Larvae emerge rapidly and growth is fast — the fish must reach sexual maturity, reproduce, and bury a new generation of eggs before the pool dries again, often within a window of a few months. Wild adults typically do not survive to see a second wet season. In the aquarium, hobbyists replicate this cycle by spawning the fish onto a peat or coir fibre substrate, removing and semi-drying the medium, and storing it at room temperature for six to twelve weeks before re-wetting over warm, slightly acidic water to trigger hatching. Fry are small at emergence and should be offered appropriate first foods — Artemia nauplii, microworm — immediately.

In the aquarium

Hypsolebias nielseni is kept by specialist annual killifish hobbyists rather than the general aquarium trade, and its husbandry follows the standard protocol for South American annual rivulids. A small, well-covered aquarium of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a breeding group; these fish do not require large footprints. Water should be soft and slightly acidic — matching the dark, tannin-stained pool water of the São Francisco cerrado — with temperatures in the range of approximately 72–79 °F. Gentle filtration is appropriate; the fish are not adapted to strong currents.

The essential husbandry requirement is a spawning substrate of boiled peat or coconut coir fibre deep enough for the fish to dive into — a layer of 1–2 in is sufficient. Pairs spawn repeatedly over weeks; the keeper collects, semi-dries, and stores the peat medium for the diapause period before re-wetting to hatch fry. The American Killifish Association and the British Killifish Association both provide detailed colony-management guides for the species and the broader South American annual group. Because wild populations are under conservation pressure, captive-bred stock from responsible hobbyist societies is strongly preferred over any wild-caught material, and hobbyist networks are an important repository of genetic diversity for threatened São Francisco annual killifish.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypsolebias nielseni as Endangered (EN) in 2018, reflecting the species' narrow endemic range within the São Francisco River floodplain system and the severe, ongoing degradation of its ephemeral pool habitat. The São Francisco basin in Minas Gerais has experienced extensive agricultural conversion of cerrado vegetation over recent decades, with the seasonal floodplain pools that annual killifish depend on particularly vulnerable to drainage for cultivation and cattle pasture. Loss of the shallow, soft-bottomed pools eliminates not just the adult habitat but the soil-egg bank that is the species' only means of surviving the dry season — once a pool is drained and ploughed, the buried egg population is destroyed.

Additional pressures include the introduction of non-native fish species (particularly Gambusia and other livebearers used for mosquito control) that predate on killifish eggs, larvae, and small adults; water extraction for irrigation reducing the duration of pool inundation; and the fragmentation of the floodplain landscape, which isolates small annual killifish populations from one another and reduces their ability to recolonise pools after local extinctions. As a single-locality endemic with a life cycle that provides no resilience to habitat loss between wet seasons, H. nielseni is acutely sensitive to any reduction in the availability and quality of its ephemeral pool sites. Continued floodplain protection in the Pirapora region and the maintenance of captive assurance populations in killifish hobbyist networks are the primary conservation priorities.
