Hypsolebias sertanejo was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 2002. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Hypsolebias sertanejo (Costa, 2002), placing the species in the genus Hypsolebias within the family Rivulidae. The authority is presented in parentheses because Costa's original description assigned the name to a different genus combination that was subsequently revised.
Hypsolebias is a genus of South American annual killifishes restricted to the eastern river drainages of Brazil, particularly the São Francisco and smaller coastal basins. The genus name combines the Greek hypso- (high, raised) with -lebias, the classical suffix used across many killifish genera, loosely meaning 'scale'. The specific epithet sertanejo is a Portuguese noun and adjective meaning 'of the Sertão' — the culturally and ecologically distinct semiarid interior of northeastern Brazil where this species lives. The name is therefore both a geographic and cultural marker, linking the fish directly to the harsh, drought-defined landscape it inhabits.
The species is sometimes traded or kept under the collection code 'Itacarambi', referencing a locality in the São Francisco drainage, which serves as a population label in the killifish hobby where locality data is considered essential for maintaining genetically distinct lines. The name Hypsolebias sertanejus is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Males of Hypsolebias sertanejo reach approximately 2 in standard length; females are smaller, typically around 1.5 in SL. The body form is typical of the genus: moderately deep, laterally compressed, with a blunt snout and a large upturned mouth suited for surface and mid-water feeding. Scales are cycloid, moderately large, and cover the body and much of the head.
Males display the bright, intricate coloration characteristic of Hypsolebias: the flanks carry iridescent bluish to greenish scales arranged in a pattern of spots or transverse bars, with reddish or orange elements in the fins, particularly the dorsal and caudal. The overall effect is vivid, serving as a signal in the species-rich, murky temporary pools where visual mate recognition is at a premium. Females are substantially drabber — brownish to olive with faint mottling — a cryptic pattern that reduces predation risk while males compete and display. Habitat
This species is endemic to the São Francisco River basin of northeastern Brazil, specifically the Sertão — the semiarid interior plateau characterised by the Caatinga biome, a scrub-thorn woodland unique to Brazil. Annual rainfall in the Sertão is low and highly seasonal, concentrated into a single wet season that fills shallow, sunlit temporary pools and flooded depressions in clay and organic soils. FishBase records the type locality as the Sertão region, and the species is confined to Brazil.
The pools this fish inhabits are characterised by dense aquatic and emergent vegetation during the wet season, with submerged aquatic plants, marsh grasses, and accumulations of decaying organic matter and roots on a soft mud or peat substrate. Water conditions are freshwater, with temperatures appropriate to the tropical and subtropical climate of the region (approximately 73–82 °F). Feeding
Hypsolebias sertanejo is carnivorous. In its natural seasonal pools the diet consists of small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, small worms, and whatever other animal prey is available in abundance during the brief wet season. Feeding is opportunistic and intense; annual killies must grow to sexual maturity and spawn within a single wet season, so they feed aggressively when food is available.

Mating
Hypsolebias sertanejo is an annual killifish with substrate-spawning reproductive behaviour. Mating is driven by the presence of the soft, loose substrate — peat, mud, or organic detritus — into which the pair submerges together to deposit eggs. Males court females actively with lateral displays and fin-spreading; the vivid male coloration functions as a species-recognition and quality signal in pools that may contain multiple killifish species simultaneously.
When a female is receptive, the pair aligns side by side and dives together into the substrate. The spawning act itself takes place buried beneath the surface of the sediment, with both fish fully submerged in the soft material. Eggs are deposited singly or in small batches with each dive. Breeding
Following spawning, the adult fish die as the pool dries — the complete life cycle from hatch to death in the wild is typically well under a year, constrained entirely by the duration of the wet season. The buried eggs enter diapause: embryonic development arrests at one or more specific developmental stages, a physiological adaptation that allows the embryo to survive months of complete desiccation in the dry substrate. Hatching is triggered by re-wetting when the rains return, completing the annual cycle.
In the aquarium, replicating this cycle requires a soft spawning medium — peat moss or coir fibre is standard — placed on the bottom of the breeding tank. After a spawning period of several weeks, the medium is removed, gently squeezed to remove excess water (leaving it just moist), placed in a sealed bag or container, and stored in a warm, dark location for a period appropriate to the species — typically two to four months for Hypsolebias. The fish lives for roughly a year under ideal conditions; hobbyists who keep it must plan around the egg-storage cycle and maintain generations across the dry-season gap.
A small aquarium of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a breeding group. Water should be soft and slightly acidic (pH 6–7, hardness 1–4 dGH) and temperature maintained between 23 and 82 °F. A layer of peat or fine coir on the tank bottom serves as both decor and spawning medium. Lighting should be moderate; the species comes from sunlit, vegetation-rich pools, but bright lighting in a bare aquarium stresses fish. Subdued planting with floating plants and fine-leaved stem plants or spawning mops (in addition to the substrate layer) improves fish condition and reduces male aggression toward females.
The species should not be kept with fish large enough to predate it or with other annual killies of different species or populations unless the keeper is deliberately managing a controlled cross — the annual killifish hobby maintains strict locality purity as a conservation measure for wild genetic lines. Separate populations and collection codes must be kept in separate tanks and never mixed. The IUCN Red List assessed Hypsolebias sertanejo as Least Concern (LC) in 2018, based on an apparently adequate range within the São Francisco River basin and no identified population collapse at the time of assessment. Despite the LC assessment, the ecological situation of any annual killifish endemic to the Sertão of northeastern Brazil deserves scrutiny. The Caatinga biome — the sole home of this species — is one of Brazil's most heavily degraded biomes, subject to agricultural conversion, water diversion for irrigation, deforestation, and the intensifying effects of drought cycles that have already become more severe in recent decades. Seasonal pools in the Sertão are transient features that can be eliminated by small-scale modifications to drainage patterns or by groundwater extraction, and because the eggs of annual killies depend on undisturbed soft substrate to survive the dry season, physical disturbance of pool beds at the wrong time of year can destroy an entire year-class. The introduction of exotic fish — particularly mosquitofish (Gambusia) — into seasonal pools represents an additional threat, as these small predators consume killi larvae aggressively.
The killifish hobby plays a meaningful role in ex-situ conservation of species like Hypsolebias sertanejo: maintaining multiple locality-pure lines in captivity across different countries provides insurance against local extinction events.
