Brycon orthotaenia, known locally as the matrinxã, is a large, powerfully built characin endemic to Brazil's São Francisco River basin, where it is one of the region's most important food and sport fish. It belongs to the minor-characin lineage that includes the hemiodus and the golden dorado — fast, muscular, mid-water fish quite unlike the shy shoaling piranhas or the plant-shredding silver dollars that share this atlas group — and it grows to a genuinely large adult size, with published records to 16 in standard length and up to 7 kg in wild populations. It is a migratory total spawner that undertakes long upriver runs to breed and is farmed and hormone-induced for aquaculture rather than kept or bred in home aquaria. This account keeps the honest picture: a big, omnivorous river fish tied tightly to one Brazilian drainage, not a tank species.

Taxonomy & naming

Brycon orthotaenia was described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1864. It sits in the family Bryconidae, one of several characin families that were carved out of a broader, catch-all Characidae as the group was revised using modern morphological and molecular evidence; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Bryconidae, and the genus Brycon within it, as the accepted placement. Catalog of Life likewise lists Brycon orthotaenia Günther, 1864 as a currently valid name.

The genus Brycon contains roughly 40 to 50 valid species distributed across Central and South America, most of them medium-to-large, deep-bodied, silvery river characins with a superficial resemblance to both the true piranhas and the larger tetras — a resemblance that is only skin-deep, since Brycon lacks the piranha's interlocking scissor dentition and instead carries small, close-set teeth suited to an omnivorous, largely plant- and fruit-based diet. Brycon orthotaenia is endemic to the São Francisco River basin in eastern Brazil, with its type locality at Rio Cipó, a tributary of the Rio das Velhas, itself a tributary of the São Francisco, in Minas Gerais.

Morphology

Brycon orthotaenia has the classic Brycon build: a moderately deep, laterally compressed, fusiform body built for sustained swimming rather than the piranha's ambush-built diamond shape, with a small adipose fin, a forked tail and silvery flanks that give the fish its bright, streamlined appearance in the water. FishBase records a maximum published length of 16 in standard length, with a maximum recorded weight of 1.6 kg in the formal record and reports of individuals reaching up to 7 kg in wild populations of the São Francisco system — genuinely large for a characin, and a size that immediately rules this species out as an aquarium fish for anything but the largest specialist system.

First sexual maturity is reached at roughly 12.5 in total length in males and 16 in total length in females, meaning most individuals encountered in the wild and in fisheries are already substantial, mature fish. As in most Brycon species, males and females are not reliably distinguished by external colour or fin shape outside the breeding season.

Habitat

The species is restricted to the São Francisco River basin of eastern Brazil, one of the country's major river systems, running largely through Minas Gerais and Bahia states. Within the basin it is described as a freshwater, benthopelagic fish, occupying the water column from near the bottom up into open mid-water rather than staying tight to cover, which fits its life history as a strong-swimming migratory species.

Hydrological conditions in the São Francisco vary seasonally and by reach, and Brycon orthotaenia responds to that variation directly: it undertakes long migratory movements timed to the river's seasonal cycle, moving upriver to spawn during the wet season and dispersing through main-channel and tributary habitat the rest of the year. Cache sources do not report specific pH or hardness figures for the species' native water; what is documented is water temperature relevant to its reproduction (see Breeding).

Feeding

Brycon orthotaenia is an omnivore with a herbivorous lean, a pattern typical of the genus. Documented diet items include aquatic macrophytes and filamentous algae, aquatic insects, and — importantly for a fish that ranges through flooded and riparian habitat — seeds and fruit, echoing the fruit- and seed-eating role that many mid-sized Neotropical characins play in dispersing forest and floodplain plants. This is a grazing-and-foraging diet profile, not the predatory, fish-eating pattern seen in Brycon's larger and more piscivorous relatives or in the golden dorado, Salminus.

In aquaculture settings the species is reared on formulated feeds, and its fast growth and reasonably efficient conversion are part of why it is valued as a farmed food fish in the São Francisco region alongside its wild-caught fishery.

Mating

Brycon orthotaenia is a migratory total spawner: rather than spawning repeatedly in small batches, mature adults release their full complement of eggs in a single reproductive event tied to a defined breeding season, documented as running from October to January in the middle São Francisco River. This migratory, seasonally cued reproductive strategy is characteristic of many large Neotropical river characins and is the same broad pattern seen in the food-fish pacus and the flannelmouth Prochilodus migrators covered elsewhere in this atlas group.

Fecundity is high, with a mean of around 400,000 eggs per spawning female reported in the literature — consistent with a species whose reproductive strategy relies on releasing large numbers of eggs into moving water rather than on nest-guarding or brood care. There is no documented courtship display or pairing behaviour comparable to a nest-spawning cichlid or piranha; reproduction here is a population-level migratory event, not a pair-bonded one.

Breeding

As a migratory total spawner, Brycon orthotaenia does not build a nest, guard eggs or provide any parental care — eggs and sperm are released into the water column during the upriver spawning migration and receive no further attention from the adults. This places it firmly alongside the pacus and Prochilodus-type migrators in this atlas group rather than with the substrate-guarding true piranhas or the foam-nesting African characins.

Because the species is economically important as a food and sport fish, its reproduction has been studied and manipulated for aquaculture: hatchery programs induce spawning with hormone treatment and incubate fertilised eggs at controlled temperatures — approximately 79 °F to trigger hormone-induced spawning and around 75 °F for post-fertilisation egg incubation, per the literature captured in the research cache. This is standard practice for commercial characin aquaculture in Brazil and mirrors how pacu and other migratory food-fish characins are propagated; Brycon orthotaenia is not a species that hobbyists breed at home, and no aquarium-spawning reports are documented.

In the aquarium

Brycon orthotaenia is not a realistic aquarium fish. With a documented maximum size of 16 in SL and wild individuals reported up to 7 kg, it is a large, active, strong-swimming river fish that needs the kind of space only a public aquarium or large outdoor pond system could reasonably provide — nothing close to a home tank. It does not appear to be established in the ornamental trade, and the research cache turned up no hobby-keeping accounts, care guides or aquarium-breeding reports for the species; its documented importance is as a wild-caught and farmed food and sport fish (matrinxã) in Brazil, not as an aquarium subject.

Prospective keepers of Brycon species in general should be aware that even the smaller members of the genus are active, fast-growing shoaling fish that quickly outgrow modest tanks; this particular species, given its large adult size and total lack of aquarium history, should not be sourced for home keeping at all.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Brycon orthotaenia as Least Concern, with an assessment dated 7 November 2018. This reflects a species that, despite being restricted to a single river basin, still supports substantial wild fisheries and an established aquaculture industry across the São Francisco system, without the population collapse that would trigger a higher threat category.

That said, the São Francisco basin as a whole faces well-documented pressures — damming, water abstraction and habitat modification along one of Brazil's most heavily engineered major rivers — and the species is described in parts of the academic literature as under localized pressure or of conservation concern in specific reaches of the São Francisco, even though its basin-wide IUCN status remains Least Concern. As a basin endemic with a single-drainage range, Brycon orthotaenia has less geographic buffer against future habitat change than a wide-ranging Amazonian species would, making continued monitoring of the São Francisco's hydrology and fisheries relevant to its long-term status.
