Lacustricola hutereaui was described by the Belgian palaeontologist and zoologist George Albert Boulenger in 1913 from material collected in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo; the authority is presented in parentheses to indicate that the species has been moved from the genus under which Boulenger originally placed it. The valid combination Lacustricola hutereaui (Boulenger, 1913) is maintained in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong), the governing authority for valid fish names.
The genus Lacustricola belongs to the family Procatopodidae, the African lampeye killifishes — a group of small schooling egg-layers found across sub-Saharan Africa in permanent rivers, floodplain swamps, and lake margins. The genus name Lacustricola combines the Latin lacus (lake) with cola (dweller or inhabitant), reflecting the association of several members with lakeside and still-water habitats. The specific epithet hutereaui commemorates Adolphe Hutereau, a Belgian officer and explorer who made natural-history collections in the Congo basin in the early twentieth century and after whom several African species were named.
The American Killifish Association has documented 26 collection localities for the species and 17 separate journal articles referencing it between 1967 and 2025, indicating sustained hobbyist and scientific attention over more than half a century.
Morphology
Lacustricola hutereaui is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum recorded total length of 1.5 in (FishBase). The body form is typical of the lampeye guild: elongated and fusiform, with a small upturned mouth adapted for surface and mid-water feeding, and a rounded caudal fin. Scales are cycloid and moderately large.
The defining feature shared across Procatopodidae is the iridescent light organ situated on the dorsal margin of the eye — the 'lampeye' of the common name. In life this patch reflects blue-green or turquoise light, functioning as a species- and sex-recognition signal particularly effective in the dimly lit littoral and swamp habitats the species favours. Males are typically more intensely pigmented and develop more vivid iridescence on the flanks and eye organ at breeding condition. Females are slightly deeper-bodied when gravid. Precise colour descriptions from living specimens depend on collection locality, as is common in widely distributed lampeye species.
Habitat
The species occupies an unusually large range for the genus, spanning two major drainage systems and several sub-basins. Northern populations occur in the Lake Chad drainage (Chari River, Chad), the White Nile (Sudan), and the Ubangi, Kotto, Bamingui, and Gribingi rivers of the Central African Republic. Southern populations are documented from the Sankuru, Uele, and Itimbiri rivers and Lake Mweru Wantipa in the Democratic Republic of Congo; from Lake Mweru Wantipa and Lake Bangweulu in Zambia; from the upper Zambezi and Kwilu and Kwando river systems in Angola; from the Chobe and Okavango in Namibia and Botswana; from the lower Shire in Malawi; and from coastal rivers in Mozambique.
Across this range the species is associated with small rivers, brooks, swamps, and the shallow vegetated margins of lakes and floodplains — typically permanent water bodies with abundant aquatic and emergent vegetation. FishBase records it as strictly floodplain and marsh-associated and describes it as a non-migratory freshwater species. Water parameters recorded by FishBase span pH 6.5–7.2 and temperature 72–86 °F, reflecting the warm, near-neutral to slightly acidic conditions typical of Central and southern African lowland wetlands.
Feeding
Like most procatopodid lampeyes, Lacustricola hutereaui is a micro-predator that feeds on small invertebrates. The upturned mouth and mid-water to surface schooling posture are well suited to taking aquatic and terrestrial insects, insect larvae, zooplankton, and small crustaceans from the water column and from just below the surface film.
In captivity the species accepts a range of small live and frozen foods — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm, and finely graded micro-pellets. Because of its small adult size, food particle dimensions matter: items should be sized to fit the mouth comfortably. A varied diet helps maintain colour and reproductive condition. The fish feeds actively throughout the day and does not compete aggressively over food in a school.
Mating
Lacustricola hutereaui is a non-annual, continuous plant-spawner. Unlike the annual killifishes of seasonal pools and pans that produce desiccation-resistant diapausing eggs, lampeyes inhabit permanent water and spawn intermittently over an extended period, laying a small number of adhesive eggs at each spawning act rather than a single large clutch.
Males display to females by extending fins and intensifying iridescent colouration, particularly the luminous eye organ. Spawning occurs when the male positions alongside the female and the pair briefly presses against each other among fine-leaved plants, moss, or roots, releasing one to a few eggs per embrace. The adhesive eggs attach to plant material and are left unattended — there is no parental care or territory defence after egg deposition. In a school with mixed sexes, spawning activity occurs daily under suitable conditions.
Breeding
Eggs are small, adhesive, and translucent, typically hatching in seven to fourteen days depending on water temperature, with warmer water (79–82 °F) accelerating development. Newly hatched fry are very small — typical of procatopodids — and require appropriately sized first foods: infusoria, rotifers, or commercially prepared fry powder, before graduating to Artemia nauplii within the first week or two.
Because spawning is continuous and the eggs are scattered among plants, the easiest approach to raising fry is a species-only or mop-based setup: fine Java moss clumps or spawning mops are checked and stripped of eggs every few days, and the eggs are transferred to a separate rearing container. Alternatively a well-planted species tank with adequate hiding structure may allow some fry to survive to a size where they are no longer eaten by adults. Water quality in the fry rearing vessel is critical — small, frequent water changes keep ammonia and nitrite at undetectable levels during the vulnerable early weeks. Growth rate is moderate; juveniles reach adult size within two to three months at optimal temperatures.
In the aquarium
Lacustricola hutereaui has been kept in the aquarium hobby since at least the late 1960s, with the American Killifish Association's journal archive documenting sustained interest across seventeen articles from 1967 to 2025. FishBase notes it is considered difficult to maintain, a reputation shared by several lampeyes that prove sensitive to water quality and require stable, well-filtered conditions rather than the benign neglect that some hardier killifish tolerate.
The species is best suited to a dedicated species tank or a carefully chosen companion grouping with other small, non-competitive fish. A group of eight to twelve individuals displays natural schooling and spawning behaviour and shows the iridescent eye markings to best effect. Fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, Taxiphyllum species, or hornwort provide spawning sites and refuge. A dark substrate and subdued lighting enhance colour. Water should be maintained within the recorded range — pH 6.5–7.2, temperature 72–82 °F — with regular small water changes to maintain quality. A well-fitted lid is advisable, as active small killifish will jump through gaps.
The wide native range means that collection locality data, where available, provides useful guidance on local water chemistry variation. Hobbyists obtaining fish from the AKA or specialist importers should note the origin if possible and match conditions accordingly.
Conservation
Lacustricola hutereaui has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and remains Not Evaluated. Its documented range across at least eight countries and four major drainage systems — the Lake Chad basin, the Congo basin, the Zambezi system, and coastal drainages of East Africa — suggests it is not an immediately threatened range-restricted species, and FishBase cross-references an LC (Least Concern) status reflecting habitat breadth rather than a formal assessment.
Nonetheless, several of the wetland and floodplain systems it inhabits are under pressure from agriculture, water abstraction, and land-use change across Central and southern Africa. Swamp and floodplain habitats in the Congo basin, the Okavango delta region, and the upper Zambezi catchment are subject to drainage, channelisation, and seasonal disruption from upstream damming. The lower Shire and Mozambique coastal river populations are exposed to the combined pressures of deforestation and subsistence fishing that affect much of the region's freshwater biodiversity. A formal IUCN assessment — one that accounts for sub-population level range and the varying degrees of habitat modification across its broad distribution — would clarify the species' true status.
