The Chobe lampeye is a miniature killifish of southern Africa's great inland drainage systems — Okavango, Cuando, and both the upper and lower Zambezi — a species long overlooked and treated as a synonym before a 2021 study restored it to full species status. At a maximum of 1 in standard length, it ranks among the smallest members of its genus, yet manages to occupy a remarkable range of permanent freshwater habitats across the arid savanna borderlands of Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Mozambique, and potentially beyond. Like all lampeyes, males carry the iridescent light-organ patch above the eye that defines the Procatopodidae, and their banded fins and reticulate scale pattern set them apart cleanly from the dozen closest relatives within Lacustricola.

Taxonomy & naming

Lacustricola chobensis was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1935 from material taken in the vicinity of the Chobe River drainage of what is now northern Botswana — the type locality that supplies the specific epithet chobensis. The type series consists of a holotype measuring 1 in standard length and paratypes ranging from 0.5 in SL. Fowler placed the fish in a concept of Haplochilichthys that was then the conventional receptacle for Old World lampeyes; the name was subsequently subsumed into synonymy and the species was not widely recognised in the intervening decades.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & van der Laan) records the valid combination as Lacustricola chobensis (Fowler, 1935). The genus Lacustricola Myers, 1924 is one of two major Old World lampeye genera in the family Procatopodidae, the other being Micropanchax; together they represent the group colloquially known as African lampeyes. The 2021 study by De Bragança, Skelton, Bills, Tweddle, and Chakona (Ichthyology and Herpetology 109: 123–137) revalidated the species through analysis of the original type material and fresh-caught specimens, provided a modern morphological diagnosis, and described a second new miniature Lacustricola from the same region in the same paper.

The diagnosis that distinguishes L. chobensis from most of its congeners rests on a combination of characters: banded dorsal, anal, and caudal fins in males; a conspicuous reticulate scale pattern on the flanks; and a notably pointed premaxilla. From the most similar species, L. hutereaui and L. petnehazyi, it is further separated by anal-fin ray counts and the position of the dorsal fin. FishBase records 0 dorsal spines with 6–8 dorsal soft rays, 0 anal spines with 10–13 anal soft rays, and 24–26 total vertebrae.

Morphology

L. chobensis is among the smallest members of a small genus: FishBase records a maximum of 1 in standard length for males and unsexed individuals, placing it firmly in miniature territory alongside several other southern African Lacustricola species. The body form is the typical slender, slightly laterally compressed silhouette of the African lampeyes — streamlined enough for open-water schooling but not as pencil-thin as some annual killifish.

The most conspicuous characters are those that define the genus and tribe: above each eye a small but clearly iridescent blue-green patch formed by a specialised arrangement of iridophores — the 'lampeye' that lends the group its name and that is visible as a cold light even in dim conditions. In males, the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins carry distinct banding, and the flanks show a reticulate pattern of scale margins that produces a net-like or honeycomb effect — both features flagged in the 2021 redescription as key diagnostic characters. The premaxilla is notably pointed, a character visible with magnification that distinguishes the species from similar congeners.

Sexual dichromatism is moderate but present, as is typical in the genus. Males are more vividly coloured with the banded finnage and reticulate pattern more strongly expressed; females are plainer, typically with less fin colour and a more uniformly pale or yellowish flank. Both sexes share the lampeye iris patch.

Habitat

L. chobensis is a fish of permanent, warm freshwater across the arid savanna belt of southern-central Africa. Its confirmed range covers the Okavango drainage (including the Okavango Delta and its tributary system), the Cuando (Kwando) River, and both the upper and lower Zambezi system — an unusually wide distribution for a miniature killifish in a region where many relatives are range-restricted endemics. Collection localities documented by the American Killifish Association include the Tcha-Mutuca Pool (Alto Chicapa, Angola), Beira (Mozambique), Caprivi Strip (Namibia), Lake Calundo (Angola), Lake Dilolo (Angola), and the Lui River (Zambia).

FishBase characterises the habitat as swampy and riverine environments close to marginal vegetation — the shallow, well-vegetated fringes of permanent lakes, swamps, and sluggish river margins where fine-leaved aquatic plants, submerged grasses, and overhanging terrestrial vegetation provide cover and egg-attachment sites. Water in these habitats varies from moderately clear to lightly turbid in flood season; conductivity and chemistry shift considerably across the range from the relatively mineral-rich Zambezi lowlands to the more dilute headwaters. The species is a pelagic schooler rather than a bottom-dweller, occupying the open water column above the vegetation.

The Bragança and Skelton 2020 diversity review (ZooKeys) situates the genus Lacustricola broadly within freshwater systems of the arid savanna regions of southern Africa, reflecting the ecological context of permanent but often isolated water bodies in a seasonally dry landscape. Unlike the West African forest lampeyes that inhabit acidic blackwater streams, southern African Lacustricola occupy more neutral to moderately alkaline savanna waters.

Feeding

No dedicated study of the diet of L. chobensis has been published, and the cache contains no species-specific feeding data. General biology of Lacustricola and Procatopodidae can be drawn on with confidence: African lampeyes are micro-predators of the open water and surface film, feeding primarily on small invertebrates — zooplankton, copepods, ostracods, small insect larvae, and emerging or fallen surface insects. The relatively small mouth and slender body form of miniature lampeyes are consistent with this mode of feeding rather than bottom-grazing or macropredation.

In aquaria, small lampeyes accept appropriately sized live and frozen invertebrates readily: Artemia nauplii and adults, Daphnia, Cyclops, mosquito larvae, and fine granular dried foods. Variety is beneficial for conditioning. As with most microkillifish, overfeeding dry food exclusively can lead to nutritional deficiency; a diet with a significant live or frozen component produces better condition, colour, and breeding behaviour.

Mating

L. chobensis is a non-annual killifish and breeds continuously in permanent water without diapause — the hallmark of the lampeye group (family Procatopodidae) as distinct from the annual soil-spawning killifish of temporary water bodies. Males display to females with spread, banded fins, showing the reticulate flank pattern to advantage. The iridescent lampeye patch is thought to play a role in species and mate recognition, particularly in mixed-species habitats where several Lacustricola species may co-occur.

Courting males orient alongside or beneath females, vibrating or quivering to stimulate egg release. Spawning is a low-intensity, repeated-event process: a small number of adhesive eggs are deposited among fine-leaved aquatic plants, submerged root masses, or trailing vegetation during each spawning act, and adults spawn repeatedly over extended periods rather than in a single mass event. This scatter-and-forget strategy is typical across the Procatopodidae and requires no parental guarding; eggs fend for themselves among the vegetation until hatching.

Breeding

As a non-annual lampeye, L. chobensis deposits small batches of adhesive eggs attached to fine-leaved plants, Java moss, or root mops over an extended breeding period — a method sometimes called 'plant-spawning' in the killifish hobby to distinguish it from the diapausing annual strategy. Eggs are small and are fertilised individually at the moment of deposition; development proceeds continuously without diapause.

In the aquarium, a well-planted or mop-equipped tank with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 72–79 °F) and subdued light encourages spawning. Pairs or small groups can be kept together in a breeding setup; because adults do not eat eggs vigorously and the adhesive nature of the eggs provides some protection among vegetation, it is possible to leave eggs in situ if the tank is heavily planted. For higher yields, removing mops and hatching eggs separately in shallow water at the same temperature gives better fry survival. Fry are small at hatching and require infusoria or similarly fine first foods before graduating to Artemia nauplii within a week or so.

In the aquarium

L. chobensis is classified by the American Killifish Association under Class 14 (All other Old World killifish), reflecting its placement outside the popular annual annual-killifish classes. It is a genuine rarity in the hobby: the AKA records only six documented collection localities, and the species' long period in synonymy means it was essentially unavailable to hobbyists for most of the twentieth century. The 2021 revalidation and subsequent interest from specialist killifish societies has brought it back to attention.

In the aquarium it does best in a species or near-species setup: a small, well-planted tank of 10–15 US gal with gentle filtration (a sponge filter is ideal — it provides biological filtration without creating current strong enough to exhaust a 1 in fish), fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and a dark substrate that shows the lampeye to advantage. Water conditions should reflect the savanna river origin: neutral to slightly alkaline, moderately hard, temperature 72–79 °F. Unlike West African forest killifish of the same family, this species should not be kept in soft acidic blackwater.

A school of six or more individuals is recommended; lampeyes are social, feel more secure in groups, and display more actively. Tankmates, if any, must be strictly non-predatory and of similar size — microrasboras, other lampeyes from the same region, or dwarf corydoras are suitable companions. The fish are surface-oriented and will jump through any gap in the cover, so a tight-fitting lid is essential.

Conservation

L. chobensis has never been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This is partly a function of its long synonymy — a species cannot be assessed if it is not recognised as valid — and the 2021 revalidation by De Bragança et al. opens the door for a future assessment now that the species has a secure taxonomic identity.

The species' relatively wide distribution across the Okavango, Cuando, and Zambezi systems in Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Mozambique might suggest resilience, but several pressures bear watching. The Okavango Delta and its upstream catchments in Angola face increasing water abstraction pressure as Angola's post-war development accelerates; changes to the flood pulse of the Okavango could alter the shallow marginal habitats this species occupies. The Cuando (Kwando) floodplain, another stronghold, is in the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area, which provides some indirect protection. In Mozambique, the Beira region — one of the AKA collection localities — has been subject to repeated extreme flooding events intensified by climate change (Cyclone Idai, 2019), with uncertain long-term effects on small-stream fish communities.

As a miniature killifish of marginal vegetation, L. chobensis is likely sensitive to degradation of riparian habitats through cattle overgrazing, wetland drainage for agriculture, and introduction of invasive fish species such as mosquitofish (Gambusia). Collector pressure from the killifish hobby is low given the species' rarity in trade, but any future commercial collection should be monitored. A formal IUCN assessment incorporating the 2021 type-locality data would be a valuable first step toward understanding population trends.
