Apteronotus magoi is a little-known ghost knifefish described in 2006 from the Orinoco basin of Venezuela, one of the many Apteronotus species that never make it into the aquarium trade but that fill out the real diversity of the New-World electric knifefishes. Like its better-known relative the black ghost, it is a scaleless, blade-bodied fish with no dorsal or tail fin, propelled by a single long anal fin, and it carries the group's defining trait: a weak electric field generated around the body and read back through skin sensors, used to find its way and find food in dark water where eyes count for little, and to signal to other knifefish. It is dark-bodied with pale head and tail markings, endemic to a single river system, and honestly still a fish of the scientific literature rather than the hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Apteronotus magoi was described in 2006 by de Santana, Castillo and Taphorn from Caño Bravo, part of the Río Apure drainage in the Río Orinoco basin, Barinas state, Venezuela. It belongs to the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Gymnotiformes are bony fish, but unusual ones: the order is defined by an electric organ and a single long ribbon-like anal fin used for propulsion, with no proper dorsal or tail fin. Within the order, the Apteronotidae are distinguished by an electric organ built from modified nerve cells rather than muscle, giving them the fastest, most refined wave-type electric discharges of any knifefish group.

The species is named for Francisco Mago-Leccia (1931–2004), the Venezuelan ichthyologist whose work on the systematics of the Gymnotiformes underpins much of what is known about the order today. Apteronotus magoi is one of a large number of Apteronotus species scattered across South American river basins that are known mainly from scientific collections rather than the aquarium trade; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name. As with other members of the genus, these New-World electric knifefishes are not related to the Asian featherback or clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus) despite the shared common name — the resemblance is convergent body shape, not kinship.

Morphology

Apteronotus magoi has the typical ghost-knifefish build: a laterally compressed, blade-like body tapering to a slender tail, with no dorsal fin and no distinct caudal fin — locomotion instead comes from a long anal fin run as a travelling wave along the underside, letting the fish move forward and backward with equal ease. The body is dark brown to black, set off by a prominent cream or yellow band across the chin and dorsal head and a narrower cream band along the mid-dorsal line, with the caudal peduncle white and mottled with dark spots — a pattern that helps distinguish it from other Apteronotus in the Orinoco.

As in the rest of the family, an electric organ runs along the body and the skin carries the electroreceptor pores that read the field it produces. The species is scaleless, like all gymnotiforms, which matters for how sensitive it is to water quality and medication. Habitat
