Taxonomy & naming
Apteronotus pemon was described by de Santana & Vari in 2013 and belongs to the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Like its relatives it is a bony fish of an unusual lineage, defined by an electric organ and a long ribbon-like anal fin rather than by the fins and scales of more familiar aquarium groups. The Apteronotidae are distinguished within Gymnotiformes by an electric organ built from modified nerve cells rather than muscle tissue, which produces a fast, continuous wave-type discharge used for electrolocation and communication.
The species epithet honours the Pemón, the indigenous people of Venezuela's Gran Sabana, the highland region drained by the Río Caroní where the species was collected and described. As with the rest of the order, Apteronotus pemon has no relationship to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the similar blade-shaped body is convergent, not a sign of kinship. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.
Morphology
Apteronotus pemon reaches a modest maximum size for the genus, recorded to about 8 in total length — roughly half the size the far more familiar black ghost knifefish (A. albifrons) attains in captivity. As in all Apteronotidae, it has no dorsal fin and no conventional tail fin; locomotion is handled almost entirely by a long anal fin run along the underside of the body, which throws travelling waves to drive the fish forward or backward with equal ease.
The skin is scaleless and carries the sensory pores that read the electric field the fish projects around itself, a system tuned for operating in dark or turbid water where vision is of limited use. Data on colour pattern and external sexual differences for this species are sparse in the available sources; ghost knifefishes as a group are typically difficult to sex externally, and no dimorphism has been documented for A. pemon specifically.
Habitat
Apteronotus pemon is known from the Río Caroní basin in Venezuela, a major tributary of the lower Orinoco that drains the Gran Sabana and Canaima regions. As presently understood, it appears to be a narrow-range endemic of this basin rather than a widely distributed species, though the extent of its range has not been thoroughly mapped — a gap that underlies its Data Deficient status.
Like other Apteronotidae, it is expected to occupy flowing river habitat rather than still water, likely favouring channels, root tangles and similar structure where its electric sense gives it an advantage over sight in the dark or tannin-stained water typical of Guiana Shield rivers. Specific data on its exact microhabitat, depth preference or water chemistry in the wild are not available in the sources reviewed here.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary data for Apteronotus pemon were found in the sources consulted. FishBase records a trophic level of 3.3 for the species, consistent with the carnivorous, invertebrate-feeding niche typical of ghost knifefishes — a benthopelagic predator of small aquatic invertebrates rather than a herbivore or specialist piscivore.
Given its close relationship to well-studied congeners such as A. albifrons and A. leptorhynchus, it is reasonable to infer a broadly similar feeding strategy: a nocturnal hunter that locates prey such as insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans largely through electrolocation rather than vision. This inference is based on family-level biology rather than direct observation of A. pemon, and should be treated as such.
Mating
No courtship or spawning observations specific to Apteronotus pemon appear in the available literature. As in other Apteronotidae, the wave-type electric organ discharge is expected to serve a dual role — electrolocation and social signalling — with the discharge carrying information about a fish's identity, sex and physiological state, and courting individuals in related species shifting discharge frequency in a form of electrical communication.
Data on the specific timing or triggers of reproduction in this species are sparse, and nothing has been published to confirm whether this electrical courtship behaviour, documented in the better-studied brown ghost knifefish, extends to A. pemon in the same form.
Breeding
There is no published breeding record for Apteronotus pemon, in the aquarium or in the wild, in the sources reviewed here. It is essentially absent from the ornamental trade, and as with most Apteronotidae there is no reason to expect it has ever been deliberately spawned in captivity.
By analogy with better-known relatives, it is presumed to be an egg-layer that scatters eggs among cover such as roots or submerged vegetation, with no substantial parental care — but this is inferred from family-level biology, not documented for the species itself. Breeding biology for A. pemon should be considered rarely bred / poorly documented rather than described with any confidence.
In the aquarium
Apteronotus pemon is not an established aquarium species; it is not part of the regular ornamental trade and is known almost exclusively from its taxonomic description and basic distribution records. Any aquarist encountering it would need to treat it with the same precautions that apply to the whole family: it is scaleless and therefore highly sensitive to copper-based medications and to ammonia and nitrate, so only mature, well-filtered, warm, soft, near-neutral water is appropriate.
As a nocturnal, electrolocating predator it would need shaded cover to retreat into by day and would not be a safe companion for fish or invertebrates small enough to be hunted at night. Given its modest recorded size (to roughly 8 in), housing needs would likely be less extreme than for the black ghost knifefish, but no specific husbandry data exist, and captive-bred stock is not known to be available.
Conservation
Apteronotus pemon is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient, based on an assessment dated 15 February 2017, reflecting limited knowledge of its distribution and population status. This is a common outcome for narrow-range, non-commercial fishes from remote basins such as the Caroní, where survey effort is limited relative to the scale of the watershed.
As an apparent single-basin endemic of the Río Caroní, the species would be expected to be sensitive to the same pressures facing other Guiana Shield rivers — habitat alteration from mining and hydroelectric development in the Caroní basin, deforestation and water-quality changes — but no species-specific threat assessment beyond "Data Deficient" is available, and its conservation status should not be overstated on that basis.
