Rhamphichthys hahni is a sand knifefish — an eel-shaped, scaleless New-World electric fish with a long, tapering, beak-like snout built for probing loose sand and mud. Like nearly all Gymnotiformes it navigates and hunts not by sight but by a weak electric field it generates around its own body, reading the way that field is disturbed by prey, obstacles and other fish through a pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD); the same discharge doubles as a signal to other knifefish in the dark. By day it lies buried in sand or hidden among roots and leaf litter in the Paraná and Uruguay river systems, emerging at night to hunt. Described in 1937 and overlooked by science for decades afterward, it remains very rarely seen in the aquarium trade — a specialist's fish rather than a shop staple.

Taxonomy & naming

Rhamphichthys hahni was described by Meinken in 1937 and belongs to the family Rhamphichthyidae, the sand or tubesnout knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Like every gymnotiform it is a bony fish but an unusual one, defined by an electric organ and a single long ribbon-like anal fin rather than by the fins most aquarium fish rely on. Rhamphichthyidae are pulse-type discharge fish, producing brief, spaced electrical pulses rather than the continuous wave discharge of the ghost knifefishes (Apteronotidae), and they are recognisable within the order by an elongated, downward-curving snout used to probe soft substrate.

The common name "knifefish" is shared with the unrelated Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which are bonytongues in a different order entirely — the resemblance is convergent body shape, not kinship. Within Gymnotiformes, the genus Rhamphichthys is placed alongside the related tubesnout genus Gymnorhamphichthys in Rhamphichthyidae. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name; GBIF records confirm the authority as (Meinken, 1937) and the family placement.

Morphology

Rhamphichthys hahni has the classic sand-knifefish silhouette: a long, laterally compressed, eel-like body tapering to a fine point at the tail, with no dorsal fin and no distinct caudal fin — propulsion comes from a long anal fin run in a rippling wave along the underside, which lets the fish move backward as readily as forward. Its most distinctive feature is the elongated, slender, downward-curving snout, giving it a beak-like profile used to probe into sand and mud for buried prey.

FishBase records a maximum length of 10.5 in total length for the species, though some sources report individuals reaching as much as 27.5 in TL; aquarium-trade accounts describe typical adults at 8–12 in. As in other Gymnotiformes the skin is entirely scaleless, and an electric organ runs the length of the body, paired with electroreceptor pores across the skin that read the field it produces. Sexes are not reliably distinguished by external features in this species.

Habitat

The species is recorded from the Paraná River basin and the Uruguay River, in the temperate-to-subtropical southern reaches of South America's La Plata drainage — waters that run cooler and more seasonal than the equatorial Amazon. It is a benthic, freshwater fish of sandy and muddy river margins, where it spends daylight hours buried in the substrate or tucked among roots and leaf litter, emerging to forage after dark.

As with other sand knifefishes, the electric sense is what makes this lifestyle possible: buried in sediment or working over a dark riverbed, eyesight is of little practical use, and the pulse-type electric field lets the fish detect prey and navigate obstacles it cannot see. Type material was collected from the Corrientes area of Argentina, in the collection of Carlos Hahn, the Argentine aquarist for whom the species is named.

Feeding

Rhamphichthys hahni is an opportunistic nocturnal predator that forages over and within sandy or muddy substrate, using its long probing snout in what aquarium literature describes as a grasp-and-suction feeding action. Its diet in the wild consists of invertebrates — aquatic insects and crustaceans — and small fish taken as they are encountered while working the substrate after dark.

It hunts primarily by electrolocation rather than sight, detecting the electrical signature of prey hidden in sand or leaf litter much as other pulse-type Rhamphichthyidae do. Specific husbandry feeding data for this species is sparse given how seldom it is kept, but the group generally takes live and frozen meaty foods — bloodworm, blackworm, small crustaceans and similar — once settled, fed after dark when the fish becomes active.

Mating

As in other Gymnotiformes, the electric organ discharge in Rhamphichthys hahni is understood to serve a signalling role alongside its sensory one, with pulse-type discharges carrying information usable in courtship and rivalry between individuals in the dark. Detailed courtship behaviour has not been documented for this species specifically, and the aquarium literature offers no confirmed account of its breeding cues.

Aquarium sources note the species is solitary outside breeding, and that wild individuals are reported to pair and mate during the dry season, when river waters warm and drop in level — a seasonal cue consistent with breeding patterns recorded in other Rhamphichthyidae and Hypopomidae. Beyond that, mating behaviour in this species is poorly documented; it should be treated as data sparse rather than assumed to follow any specific protocol.

Breeding

Breeding in Rhamphichthys hahni is essentially undocumented. Like most small Rhamphichthyidae and Hypopomidae it is presumed to be an egg-layer, but no confirmed account of spawning behaviour, egg deposition site, or parental care has been recorded for this species in the literature or hobby sources reviewed here.

The species has no established aquarium breeding history — it is rarely even kept, let alone bred — so anything beyond the seasonal dry-season pairing noted by aquarium sources would be speculation. The honest position for the aquarist is that this is a fish to keep, observe and report on, not one with a known breeding protocol to follow.

In the aquarium

Rhamphichthys hahni is described by specialist gymnotiform dealers as very rare in the aquarium trade — a fish encountered occasionally by enthusiasts rather than stocked as a regular import. Its needs follow the pattern of other sand knifefishes: a soft, sandy substrate deep enough to bury into, dim lighting, and secure cover such as roots or driftwood for daylight hours, since it is a nocturnal fish that relies on darkness and cover to feel secure.

Being scaleless, it needs the same caution given to other Gymnotiformes — no copper-based medications, reduced dosing of standard treatments, and clean, well-matured water, since scaleless fish are unusually sensitive to ammonia and nitrate. As a nocturnal predator that hunts by electrolocation, it is not a safe companion for small fish or shrimp after dark, and its size — reported up to 8–12 in or more in the trade — calls for a long, spacious tank with plenty of open sand for it to forage and bury in. Given how seldom it is available, captive husbandry knowledge remains limited, and prospective keepers should expect to be working with sparse guidance rather than an established care sheet.

Conservation

Rhamphichthys hahni is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, reflecting a range across the Paraná and Uruguay river systems in southern South America rather than confinement to a single threatened locality. It is not currently considered a species of conservation concern.

As with other fish of the wider Paraná–Uruguay–La Plata drainage, longer-term pressures include damming, water-quality decline and habitat alteration across the basin, though nothing in the available sources ties a specific threat to this species beyond the general Least Concern assessment. Its rarity in the aquarium trade means collection pressure for the hobby is not a meaningful factor for this species.
