Taxonomy & naming
Gymnotus cuia was formally described in 2018 by Craig, Malabarba, Crampton and Albert as part of a broader taxonomic revision that split the old, widespread "Gymnotus carapo" species complex into more than twenty distinct species. It belongs to the family Gymnotidae, within the order Gymnotiformes, the New World electric knifefishes — bony fish, but highly unusual ones, defined by an electric organ that runs the length of the body and by a single long anal fin used for propulsion in place of a proper tail. The holotype, a fish of 7.5 in total length cataloged as UFRGS 23700, was collected at Lagoa Verde in Itapuã State Park, Viamão, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, with a paratype series ranging from 6.5–8.5 in.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Gymnotus cuia as a valid name with this authorship, and GBIF's taxon record confirms the same attribution. The name cuia refers to the dried, hollowed gourd used throughout southern Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina to drink mate tea; the describing authors chose it because the fish's deep body and rounded head recall the shape of that gourd. Despite the shared common name "knifefish", Gymnotus and its relatives are not related to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus) — those are bonytongues in an entirely different order, and the resemblance between the two groups is convergent body shape, not kinship.
Morphology
Like other members of its genus, Gymnotus cuia is stouter and more heavily built than the slender ghost knifefishes, with a deep, laterally compressed body marked by bold, irregular dark bands over a lighter ground colour — the classic "banded knifefish" look. It has no dorsal fin and no separate tail fin; locomotion comes from a long anal fin running most of the length of the underside, thrown into travelling waves that let the fish move forward or backward with equal ease. The species reaches a recorded maximum of about 12 in total length, based on measured specimens, considerably smaller than the giant of the family, the electric eel, but solidly built for its size.
Running along the body is the electric organ characteristic of the order, paired with an array of sensory pores across the skin that read the electric field it produces. Gymnotus cuia, like every Gymnotus, generates a pulse-type electric organ discharge — a train of brief, stereotyped pulses rather than the continuous wave produced by the ghost knifefishes — and this pulse pattern is thought to be genus-wide, though a species-specific waveform for G. cuia itself has not been published. The skin is scaleless and unprotected, a trait shared across the order that has real consequences for how these fish must be kept and medicated.
Habitat
Gymnotus cuia is native to the Paraná and Uruguay river basins in the southern Neotropics, with its type locality at Lagoa Verde, a shallow lake within Itapuã State Park near Viamão in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Within this range it is described as one of the most widespread and abundant knifefish species, common at its type locality and across the broader region rather than a narrow-range specialist.
Its preferred habitat is distinctive even among the Gymnotus: shallow lakes generally less than a metre deep, thickly grown with dense emergent vegetation and the tangled roots of floating water hyacinth. That structure-rich, dimly lit environment suits an electrolocating predator well, letting it hunt and navigate among the roots and stems where sight is of limited use. The species has a marked reproductive cycle tied to the southern-hemisphere spring and summer, spawning between November and March.
Feeding
FishBase records a trophic level of about 3.3 for Gymnotus cuia, placing it as a carnivore feeding at a middling to fairly high point in the food web, consistent with the predatory habits documented across the genus. Banded knifefishes generally hunt at night, working slowly through dense cover and locating prey — aquatic insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and other invertebrates hidden among roots and sediment — largely by electrolocation rather than sight, since the tangled, dimly lit lakes they inhabit offer eyes little advantage after dark.
No species-specific dietary breakdown for G. cuia has been published beyond this trophic-level figure, but its close relatives in the Gymnotus carapo complex are opportunistic hunters of small aquatic animals, and there is no reason to expect this species to differ. As a facultative air-breather — a trait shared across Gymnotidae — it can tolerate the low-oxygen conditions typical of the dense, still, weed-choked lakes where it feeds, an advantage over strictly gill-breathing competitors in the same habitat.
Mating
As in other Gymnotus, the electric organ discharge in G. cuia is understood to serve a communicative role alongside its use in electrolocation, carrying information that can signal identity and readiness to breed to other fish of the same species. Detailed courtship behaviour has not been documented for G. cuia specifically, but the species has a clearly defined reproductive season, spawning from November through March — the austral spring and summer, when rising water and seasonal flooding likely expand the shallow, vegetated habitat it depends on.
Gymnotidae as a family are unusual among fishes for showing genuine parental care, and the reproductive pattern known from other Gymnotus — courtship conducted partly through electric signalling in dark, structure-dense water, followed by nest construction — is the most reasonable framework for this species, though it has not been confirmed by direct observation in G. cuia. The data here remain sparse, and firmer conclusions would require targeted field study.
Breeding
No published account describes captive or field-observed breeding specific to Gymnotus cuia, and the species is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade, so aquarium breeding reports do not exist. What is documented is the timing: a reproductive cycle running from November to March, coinciding with the wet season in southern Brazil, when the shallow lakes it inhabits are likely at their most extensive and vegetated.
Across the genus Gymnotus, the general pattern is that the male builds and guards a nest — often a sheltered mass tucked among aquatic vegetation or a bubble raft — into which the female spawns, with the male then guarding the eggs and larvae, a genuinely unusual degree of parental investment for a fish. It is reasonable to expect G. cuia follows this same genus-wide mode, but this has not been directly confirmed for the species, and the honest position is that its breeding biology is poorly documented and best described as data sparse rather than assumed.
In the aquarium
Gymnotus cuia is not an established aquarium species; it does not appear in the ornamental trade, and no hobbyist husbandry record for it could be found. Anything said about keeping it must therefore be extrapolated cautiously from its genus and its documented natural habitat, rather than from direct aquarium experience.
Were it ever available, the FishBase habitat data point clearly toward what it would need: shallow, warm, densely planted or root-tangled water with dim lighting and plenty of cover, reflecting the shallow hyacinth-choked lakes it comes from in the wild. As with all Gymnotus, it should be assumed to be a nocturnal predator unsuitable for housing with small, bite-sized tankmates, and — being scaleless like every gymnotiform — it would need careful, reduced-dose medication and clean, well-maintained water, avoiding copper-based treatments entirely. Given its complete absence from the hobby, the honest recommendation for anyone encountering this species is to treat it as a research or conservation subject rather than an aquarium prospect.
Conservation
Gymnotus cuia has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; no assessment for this species appears in IUCN records, GBIF, or the Catalog of Fishes beyond its taxonomic status, so its formal conservation status is Not Evaluated. This is unsurprising for a species described as recently as 2018, split out of a wider species complex that had previously been lumped under the name Gymnotus carapo.
What is known suggests the species is in reasonably secure standing at present: it is described in the primary literature as abundant at its type locality and widespread across the Paraná and Uruguay basins, rather than as a narrow-range endemic under obvious pressure. That said, the shallow, densely vegetated lake habitat it depends on — exactly the kind of wetland margin most vulnerable to drainage, agricultural runoff and water-level management — would be worth monitoring as land use intensifies across southern Brazil, Uruguay and northern Argentina, even in the absence of a formal assessment.
