Gymnotus refugio is a banded knifefish described in 2016 from a narrow strip of coastal drainages in southern Brazil, one of the many species split from the once-catchall Gymnotus pantherinus group. Like every member of its stout, boldly barred genus, it swims by rippling a single long anal fin rather than a proper tail, and it reads the dark, plant-choked waters it lives in through a weak electric field generated along its body — a pulse-type discharge used both to sense prey and obstacles in the dark and to signal other Gymnotus. It is a fish known almost entirely from the scientific literature rather than the aquarium trade, and it carries an IUCN Vulnerable listing tied to the very small area it occupies.

Taxonomy & naming

Gymnotus refugio was formally described by Giora & Malabarba in 2016 in Zootaxa, based on material from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It belongs to the family Gymnotidae within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes — an entirely different lineage from the superficially similar Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which are bonytongues and unrelated despite the shared common name. Gymnotiforms are defined by an electric organ and a long ribbon-like anal fin used for locomotion, traits that set the whole order apart from ordinary bony fishes.

The species was placed in the Gymnotus pantherinus species-group and described as its most southerly (meridional) known record, distinguished from G. pantherinus and G. capitimaculatus by a distinctly different colour pattern along with differing morphometric and meristic details. The genus Gymnotus itself is the only gymnotiform lineage to range as far as Central America, and it has been split extensively in recent decades as the old, broadly defined G. carapo species-complex has been resolved into many narrower species — G. refugio is a product of that ongoing revision. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name.

Morphology

As in other Gymnotus, the body of G. refugio is elongate, laterally compressed and scaleless, tapering smoothly to a thin, whip-like rear rather than ending in a fin fan; a single long anal fin runs beneath most of the body length and does essentially all the swimming work, with no dorsal fin and no proper caudal fin. The original description highlights a colour pattern of dark, irregular bands or blotches across the flanks that is diagnostic against its closest relatives in the pantherinus group, along with specific measurements and fin-ray, scale-row and vertebral counts used to separate it from similar species. The holotype measured approximately 7 in total length (about 6.5 in).

Running the length of the body is the electric organ that gives the order its name, paired with an array of sensory pores across the skin that read the field it produces. Gymnotus is confirmed as a pulse-type electric genus: rather than a continuous hum, the discharge is delivered as discrete pulses, each one built from three to five component waves, transformed by the electrocytes into a complex, species-specific electromotor signature used for electrolocation and communication in the dark. That signature — its exact waveform and timing — is one of the traits taxonomists use to help tell superficially similar Gymnotus species apart.

Habitat

Gymnotus refugio is known from a narrow band of coastal drainages in southern Brazil: the Laguna dos Patos system and the Rio Tramandaí, Rio Maquiné and Rio Mampituba basins, running from southern Rio Grande do Sul to the southern border of Santa Catarina state. This is a small, specific range even by the standards of narrow-range Gymnotus, and it sits entirely within a stretch of coastal Atlantic Forest drainage rather than the vast interior river systems that carry most of the genus's diversity.

Within that range the species has been recorded in streams and small tributaries, and in shallow, still (lentic) puddles with muddy bottoms set inside dense riparian vegetation described as Mata Paludosa, or swampy forest. Like other Gymnotus it is a fish of structurally complex, often turbid or shaded water where an electric sense does far more work than eyesight, and its habitat specificity — tied to this particular kind of swampy forest margin — is part of what has driven its conservation concern.

Feeding

Gymnotus as a genus are tough, largely nocturnal predators, hunting by electrolocation in the dark waters of swamps and floodplains where vision alone would be of little use. The research cache for G. refugio specifically records it as invertivorous, feeding mainly on autochthonous insects — that is, insect prey produced within its own stream and pool habitat rather than washed in from outside, consistent with a fish that forages close to home within a small home range.

As facultative air-breathers, Gymnotus can tolerate the low-oxygen, often stagnant pools and swampy margins where much of their invertebrate prey lives, hunting it out at night by sensing the small electrical disturbances and movements insects and larvae make in the water and sediment. Detailed dietary data specific to G. refugio beyond its invertivorous, insect-based diet is sparse in the available literature.

Mating

Electric organ discharge is central to courtship and social signalling across Gymnotus, with each species and often each sex carrying a distinct discharge signature that lets individuals recognise one another, establish territory and, in season, find a mate in dark or turbid water where sight is of little use. Reproduction in G. refugio has been documented as a fractional spawner: rather than releasing all her eggs at once, the female sheds them in batches over an extended reproductive period running from the end of winter through the last months of summer, tracking seasonal cues in her coastal-drainage habitat.

A life-history study of the species found its absolute fecundity to be low relative to other gymnotiforms studied — averaging around 419 oocytes per female, with oocyte diameters ranging roughly 0.5 in — a pattern the researchers linked directly to the species' Endangered status, alongside its territoriality and narrow habitat specificity. Beyond the seasonal timing and fractional spawning pattern, courtship behaviour itself is not detailed in the sources available.

Breeding

Gymnotidae are unusual among fishes for showing genuine parental care, and G. refugio follows the pattern documented for the genus: after the female's fractional spawning, the male provides parental care for the resulting eggs and young, a behaviour recorded directly in the life-history literature on this species. As in other Gymnotus, this is consistent with a male that builds or defends a sheltered nest site — often a hollow among vegetation or a similar refuge — though the cache does not describe the nest structure itself for G. refugio specifically.

The combination of low fecundity, a fractional spawning strategy tied to a narrow seasonal window, strong site fidelity and male parental investment is cited by researchers as part of why the species is vulnerable — it cannot simply flood its habitat with offspring the way a highly fecund fish might. G. refugio is essentially unknown in aquarium breeding; nothing in the record suggests it has been bred in captivity, and given its Endangered status and near-absence from the trade, that is not a fair expectation to place on it.

In the aquarium

Gymnotus refugio is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense — it is known from scientific collections and taxonomic literature, not the ornamental trade, and its Endangered status and tiny native range make wild collection for the hobby inappropriate. Where general Gymnotus care notes are useful as background: the genus is scaleless, which makes any Gymnotus unusually sensitive to ammonia and nitrate and to copper-based or harsh medications, and its members are nocturnal, territorial predators that need dim lighting, dense cover and no small tankmates that could be hunted after dark.

For this species specifically, the responsible position is straightforward: there is no established aquarium husbandry to draw on, and given its conservation status, the fish's future lies in habitat protection in its native coastal drainages, not in the trade.

Conservation

Gymnotus refugio is assessed by the IUCN as Vulnerable. Researchers attribute that status to a combination of factors documented in the life-history literature: a very small, specific range confined to a handful of coastal drainages in southern Rio Grande do Sul and the adjacent edge of Santa Catarina; strong habitat specificity for swampy forest streams and puddle margins; territorial behaviour; and a reproductive strategy — low absolute fecundity, fractional spawning, male parental care — that limits how quickly a population can recover from disturbance.

As a coastal-drainage endemic in a region of Brazil under ongoing pressure from agricultural and urban land conversion, drainage and habitat alteration are the pressures most likely to threaten the streams, tributaries and swampy-forest pools this species depends on, though the cache does not detail a specific current threat assessment beyond the Vulnerable listing itself. Its narrow range means any single episode of habitat loss carries outsized weight for the species as a whole.
