Taxonomy & naming
Bunocephalus erondinae was described in 2010 by the Brazilian ichthyologist Cardoso, and the Catalog of Fishes treats the name as valid within the genus Bunocephalus. It belongs to the family Aspredinidae, the banjo catfishes, a South American endemic family of roughly 44 valid species across 13 genera. Unlike some Bunocephalus that were originally described in the closely related genus Dysichthys (a junior synonym of Bunocephalus), B. erondinae was described directly under Bunocephalus, so no historical name change applies to it.
Bunocephalus is one of the largest genera in Aspredinidae, and its species are notoriously difficult to tell apart without close examination — flattened body shape, mottled camouflage colouring and a naked, tuberculate skin are shared across most of them. B. erondinae is distinguished from its congeners on fine anatomical detail rather than anything obvious to the aquarist eye, and data on the species remains sparse relative to the more widely traded Bunocephalus coracoideus.
Morphology
Like all banjo catfishes, Bunocephalus erondinae has the family's signature shape: a broad, flattened, disc-like head and forebody tapering to a slender, almost eel-like tail, giving the fish its "banjo" silhouette. The skin is entirely scaleless and covered in small tubercles rather than smooth skin or bony plates, and the body carries a mottled brown-and-tan camouflage pattern that renders it almost invisible against sand and leaf litter.
FishBase records a maximum size of 3.5 in standard length for this species, a genuinely small fish even by banjo-cat standards — but that figure should still be taken as the real adult size to plan a tank around, not assumed to shrink further. As in other Aspredinidae, Bunocephalus lacks the stout, serrated, locking pectoral and dorsal spines typical of many other catfish families; there is no specific report of venom or spines for this genus, though the scaleless skin still carries the same medication sensitivity common to naked-skinned catfish.
Habitat
Bunocephalus erondinae is known from tributary streams of the Laguna dos Patos system in Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost Brazilian state — a large subtropical coastal lagoon complex rather than the Amazon basin most banjo cats inhabit. The species is restricted to the freshwater tributaries feeding the lagoon, away from the brackish water found nearer its outlet to the sea.
The Laguna dos Patos ecoregion is subtropical rather than tropical, meaning this species experiences a cooler seasonal temperature range than Amazonian Bunocephalus. It is a benthic, demersal species, spending its time resting on or partly buried in soft substrate on the stream bottom, and FishBase notes it as a facultative air-breather, able to supplement gill respiration by gulping air when needed.
Feeding
Bunocephalus erondinae is a nocturnal benthic feeder with a trophic level (around 3.1 on FishBase) consistent with a diet of small invertebrates rather than larger prey. It forages over the substrate mainly after dark, picking up small aquatic invertebrates, and likely detritus, in the manner typical of the genus.
No aquarium-specific feeding data exists for this species, but its well-kept congener Bunocephalus coracoideus is a reliable guide: banjo cats take sinking pellets, frozen foods and other prepared foods readily once settled, and do best when fed after lights-out so they are not out-competed by more active, daytime tankmates.
Mating
Courtship and spawning behaviour have not been documented for Bunocephalus erondinae. FishBase lists the species' maturity and reproductive data as unknown. In banjo catfishes generally, reproduction is poorly studied; some Aspredinidae females are known to carry fertilised eggs attached to the skin of the belly via fleshy stalks (cotylephores) until hatching, but this has not been confirmed specifically for Bunocephalus erondinae, and it should not be assumed to apply here without direct evidence.
Breeding
Breeding in Bunocephalus erondinae is essentially undocumented, and the species should be considered not established in the hobby. The best available proxy is the congener B. coracoideus, in which spawning has only rarely been achieved in captivity: eggs are laid at night over the substrate, and the parents show no protective behaviour, often consuming their own spawn.
Given the total absence of specific breeding records for B. erondinae — and the possibility, seen elsewhere in Aspredinidae, that some species carry eggs on the female's belly rather than scattering them — it is more honest to say breeding biology in this species is simply unknown than to assume either mode. Anyone who does witness reproduction in aquarium conditions would be documenting genuinely new information for the species.
In the aquarium
Bunocephalus erondinae is a small fish at a maximum of about 3.5 in SL, so a modest, well-established aquarium with a soft sand substrate for burrowing and dim, sheltered cover is enough — but because it is virtually unknown in the trade, care information has to be extrapolated cautiously from better-known banjo cats. It is a nocturnal, secretive species that will spend daylight hours buried or motionless and camouflaged, and is easily overlooked or presumed dead by inexperienced keepers.
As with all scaleless catfish, medications — particularly copper-based treatments — should be dosed conservatively, since Aspredinidae lack the protective scale layer of many other fish and are correspondingly more sensitive. Coming from the cooler, subtropical Laguna dos Patos system rather than the warm Amazon, it likely tolerates and may prefer somewhat cooler water than tropical Bunocephalus species, though specific aquarium temperature ranges have not been published for this species. It is peaceful and poses no threat to tankmates too large to eat.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Bunocephalus erondinae as Least Concern, an assessment made in 2018. As a species restricted to the tributaries of a single lagoon system in southern Brazil, its status should still be watched: freshwater habitats feeding the Laguna dos Patos face pressure from agricultural runoff, urban development and water extraction typical of populated coastal Brazil.
The species is not a significant part of the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is not considered a threat; its conservation outlook depends chiefly on the health of the streams and tributaries it inhabits within the Laguna dos Patos basin.
