Rhamphichthys heleios is a slender, tube-snouted sand knifefish described in 2015 from the floodplains of the Amazon basin in Brazil, one of a genus of long-nosed Gymnotiformes that spend their days buried in sand and their nights reading the world through electricity. Like almost every New-World knifefish, it carries a weak electric organ around its body and uses the field it generates for electrolocation — sensing prey, obstacles and other fish in dark, sediment-laden water where eyes count for little — and for communication, since each species and sex has its own discharge signature. It swims by rippling a single very long anal fin rather than a tail, moving backwards as easily as forwards, and it has no scales at all. Little studied and rarely if ever seen in the aquarium trade, it is best understood as a specialist floodplain fish rather than a hobby staple; the species epithet heleios, Greek for "dwelling in the marsh", describes exactly the seasonally flooded habitat it was found in.

Taxonomy & naming

Rhamphichthys heleios was described by Carvalho & Albert in 2015 (Copeia 103(1): 187–197) from specimens collected in Amazon floodplain habitats, with the holotype and a paratype taken at Ilha do Martelo. It belongs to the family Rhamphichthyidae, the sand or tubesnout knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes, a group only distantly related to other aquarium fish and defined by their electric organs and their long, ribbon-like anal fin. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) confirms Rhamphichthys heleios as the valid name and Rhamphichthyidae as the family.

The genus name Rhamphichthys comes from the Greek for "beaked fish", a reference to the long, tubular, downturned snout shared by the sand knifefishes. The species epithet heleios is Greek for "dwelling in the marsh" or "of the marsh", chosen for the floodplain habitat where the species was found. It was distinguished from its congeners chiefly by colour pattern — a series of dark, irregular, rounded blotches running along the lateral line rather than the more sharply defined dorsal saddles seen in relatives such as R. drepanium and R. marmoratus, with which it is often collected in the same floodplain pools. As with other Gymnotiformes, this is a bony fish that behaves unlike almost any other: nearly the whole order produces a weak electric organ discharge (EOD) used for electrolocation and signalling, and R. heleios is no exception — its discharge is tetraphasic and pulse-type, not the continuous wave-type signal of the ghost knifefishes.

Morphology

Rhamphichthys heleios has the classic sand-knifefish build: an elongated, laterally compressed body tapering to a fine point, a long tubular snout with a small, essentially toothless mouth suited to probing rather than biting, and cycloid scales covering the body — though the skin still reads as smooth and the fish is far more delicate than its size suggests. FishBase records a maximum length of 15.5 in standard length for the species, and the genus as a whole is reported to reach as much as 33.5 in total length in its largest members, so R. heleios sits toward the smaller-to-mid range for the group. There is no dorsal fin and no true tail fin; locomotion comes from a long anal fin run as a travelling wave along the underside of the body, letting the fish glide forwards or backwards with equal control — useful for a fish that spends much of its time reversing in and out of sand and leaf litter.

The electric organ runs the length of the body, with an accessory subpectoral electric organ noted in the genus, and a well-developed lateral line system works alongside it. The discharge is tetraphasic and pulse-type, tuned for short-range electrolocation in the cluttered, low-visibility floodplain habitats the genus favours rather than the long, continuous wave signal used by open-water gymnotiforms. Colour pattern is the most useful field character for the species: a series of dark, irregular, rounded blotches along the body over the lateral line, without the clean dorsal saddle markings of its closest relatives.

Habitat

The species is known from the Amazon and Guaporé river systems in Brazil — records place it in the Solimões/Amazon mainstem upstream of the Madeira River mouth, plus a single Guaporé locality — making it, on current knowledge, a fish of a fairly restricted stretch of the Amazon basin rather than a continent-wide range. It is a floodplain specialist: the type locality and other captures are from the seasonally inundated várzea habitats associated with large rivers, exactly the kind of "marsh-dwelling" setting its name describes.

Sand and tubesnout knifefishes in this genus are benthic and largely nocturnal, and by day they typically lie buried in sandy or muddy substrate, emerging or foraging actively after dark. Like other gymnotiforms, they rely on their electric sense far more than on vision in these dim, often turbid or tannin-stained floodplain waters, where sight would be of limited use for finding buried prey or navigating around submerged debris.

Feeding

Rhamphichthys heleios carries a trophic level around 3.2 on FishBase, consistent with an intermediate predator that feeds on invertebrates rather than other fish. The genus's long, probing snout is built for sifting through sand and soft substrate to find infaunal prey — insect larvae, oligochaete worms and similar small invertebrates living buried in the sediment — which the fish locates primarily by electrolocation rather than sight.

No specific husbandry feeding record exists for this species in the cached sources, and given how rarely it is encountered outside scientific collections, none should be assumed. Based on the feeding mode of the genus and family, a captive individual would be expected to take small live or frozen invertebrate foods offered near or in a soft substrate after dark, in keeping with its nocturnal, benthic foraging habit — but this is inference from relatives, not a documented aquarium record for the species itself.

Mating

As in other pulse-type Gymnotiformes, the electric organ discharge in Rhamphichthys is thought to carry information used in social and reproductive contexts — species- and sex-specific waveform differences are a recognised feature of the family, and electric signalling is presumed to play a role in locating mates and in interactions between rivals in the dark, cluttered floodplain habitats these fish occupy. Beyond that general pattern, courtship behaviour has not been documented for R. heleios specifically.

Maturity and reproductive biology for this species are noted as unknown in the available literature. The sources consulted for this article report no observations of courtship or spawning behaviour in the wild or in captivity — this is a poorly studied, recently described species, and honest reporting here means acknowledging that gap rather than extrapolating a courtship account from better-known relatives.

Breeding

Breeding in Rhamphichthys heleios is undocumented. FishBase explicitly notes that maturity is unknown for the species, and no spawning account — wild or captive — appears in the sources reviewed. What can be said comes from the broader pattern in Hypopomidae and Rhamphichthyidae: where breeding has been recorded in the family at all, these small pulse-type knifefishes are egg-layers that scatter or deposit eggs among leaf litter, roots or sand, generally timed to the wet season, with little or no parental care afterward.

There is no aquarium breeding record for this species, and none should be expected: it is not established in the hobby, and even wild biological data is sparse. The honest position is that this is a poorly documented egg-layer in a family where breeding overall is poorly documented, rather than a species with any known protocol to describe.

In the aquarium

Rhamphichthys heleios is not a species with an established aquarium presence; the sources available for this profile are taxonomic and distributional rather than hobbyist accounts, and no husbandry record could be confirmed. Any care approach must therefore be inferred cautiously from its biology and from its close relatives in the sand-knifefish group, rather than stated as tested fact.

Were it to be kept, the general rules for Rhamphichthyidae and Hypopomidae would apply: these are scaleless, delicate, nocturnal fish that need dim lighting, a soft sand substrate to bury in, and gentle, clean, warm, softish water with excellent filtration, since scaleless gymnotiforms are unusually sensitive to ammonia, nitrate and to copper-based or harsh medications, which should be avoided or used at reduced dose. They are not community fish for bite-size tankmates, given their nocturnal predatory habit. Given how little is documented for this particular species, captive-bred stock does not exist and any specimen encountered would necessarily be wild-collected — a further reason to treat this as a specialist or scientific-interest fish rather than a hobby recommendation.

Conservation

Rhamphichthys heleios is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2020). This reflects the lack of documented major threats to the species within its known Amazon and Guaporé river range, rather than a demonstrated abundance across a wide area — its confirmed range so far is a fairly limited stretch of the Amazon basin plus one Guaporé locality, the profile of a narrow-range floodplain species rather than a continent-spanning one.

As with many recently described, poorly studied Amazon basin endemics, the main long-term pressures on floodplain specialists like this are habitat alteration from damming and hydrological change, deforestation, and pollution affecting the seasonally flooded várzea habitats they depend on. There is no evidence in the available sources of active exploitation or aquarium-trade collection pressure on this species, and its Least Concern status should be read as a reflection of currently available data rather than a guarantee against future habitat loss.
