Rhamphichthys lineatus is a sand knifefish of the family Rhamphichthyidae, a slender, tube-snouted electric fish that spends its days buried in river-bottom sand and comes out after dark to probe for food. Like nearly every New-World electric knifefish, it carries a weak electric organ around its long body and reads the field it generates back through sensory pores on its skin — a private, always-on sense called electrolocation that lets it find prey and other knifefish in water too dark or turbid for eyes to be much use. It swims by rippling a single very long anal fin rather than a tail, has no dorsal fin at all, and moves backward as easily as forward. It is a genuinely obscure species in the aquarium trade — most of what is documented about its day-to-day biology comes from its better-studied genus relatives rather than from R. lineatus itself.

Taxonomy & naming

Rhamphichthys lineatus was described by the French naturalist Francis de Laporte de Castelnau in 1855, from material collected in South America during his Amazon expeditions. It belongs to the family Rhamphichthyidae — the sand or tubesnout knifefishes — within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid name and original description.

The genus Rhamphichthys is defined by its long, tube-like, downward-curving snout, an adaptation for probing sand and sediment that gives the family its common name. The species epithet lineatus is Latin for "lined," referring to a distinct longitudinal stripe running along the flanks. As with many gymnotiforms, the Rhamphichthyidae are only distantly related to the aquarium fishes they superficially resemble, and they have nothing to do with the Asian featherback or clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus) beyond a convergent, blade-like body shape — those are bonytongues from an entirely separate order.

Morphology

Rhamphichthys lineatus has the classic sand-knifefish build: an elongated, laterally compressed body tapering to a fine point at the tail, with no dorsal fin, no pelvic fins, and no proper caudal fin. As in other gymnotiforms, propulsion comes almost entirely from a single very long anal fin running most of the underside of the body, thrown into travelling waves that let the fish move forward or backward with equal control. The skin is scaleless.

The defining feature of the genus is the snout: long, narrow and beak-like, curving gently downward, built for probing into sand rather than for biting. Running along the body is the fish's electric organ; in Rhamphichthys and its relatives the discharge is pulse-type, and there is a documented accessory electric organ in the humeral (shoulder) region alongside the main organ, which occupies roughly the rear third of the body. Sensory pores across the skin read the resulting field. The lined stripe along the flank that gives the species its name is one of the few external field marks distinguishing it from congeners; a related species, R. rostratus, is reported to reach around 39.5 in total length in exceptional cases, and R. lineatus is presumed to grow to a broadly similar size, though hard data specific to this species is sparse.

Habitat

Rhamphichthys lineatus is a South American freshwater species, with its type locality in the Ucayali River basin of Peru, part of the wider Amazon drainage. As with most Rhamphichthyidae, it is a fish of sandy river margins and channels, where it spends daylight hours buried or resting in the substrate and becomes active at night.

The genus as a whole favors slow-flowing to moderate current over clean sand, often near cover such as submerged roots or leaf litter drifts. Turbid or dimly lit water suits an animal that navigates mainly by electrolocation rather than sight; like other nocturnal gymnotiforms, its electric sense does the work that eyes would do in clearer, brighter water. Detailed habitat data specific to R. lineatus beyond its Amazonian type locality is not well documented in the literature.

Feeding

Sand knifefishes are opportunistic, largely nocturnal predators that hunt small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae and crustaceans in particular — sifted from sand and leaf litter using the long snout, guided by electrolocation rather than sight. Small fish are also taken opportunistically where available. The pulse-type electric organ discharge lets the fish detect the faint electrical signatures of buried or hidden prey in conditions where vision would be of little use.

Species-specific feeding data for R. lineatus is data sparse, but the genus's foraging strategy — probing sandy substrate by night with the specialized snout — is well established from congeners and is a reasonable guide to how this species feeds in the wild.

Mating

As in other gymnotiforms, the electric organ discharge in Rhamphichthys is understood to carry information beyond simple electrolocation — it functions as a signal of identity, sex and readiness to breed, and courtship in electric knifefishes generally involves an exchange of these pulse signals between prospective mates in the dark. Whether this has been specifically documented in R. lineatus is not established in available sources; the general pattern is inferred from better-studied gymnotiforms.

Beyond the likely role of electric signalling in courtship, no detailed account of pair formation or spawning behavior in Rhamphichthys lineatus is documented. This is a poorly studied species even by the standards of a poorly studied family.

Breeding

Breeding biology in Rhamphichthys lineatus is essentially undocumented. Across the Rhamphichthyidae and the related Hypopomidae, where breeding has been observed at all it typically involves egg-scattering among sand, roots or leaf litter, generally tied to seasonal (often wet-season) conditions, with little or no parental care afterward — but this pattern has not been confirmed specifically for R. lineatus.

There are no records of this species being bred in captivity, and it is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade. Data is sparse enough that any more specific claim about its breeding mode would be guesswork rather than fact; "poorly documented" is the honest and accurate description.

In the aquarium

Rhamphichthys lineatus is not an established aquarium fish — it is rarely if ever seen in the trade, and almost nothing species-specific has been published about keeping it. What follows is inferred from the genus and family, using the better-documented congener R. rostratus as a proxy: warm water in the range of roughly 72–82 °F, soft and mildly acidic to neutral, and a deep, soft sand substrate the fish can bury itself in during the day. A tank set up for a sand knifefish needs to avoid anything coarse or sharp that could injure the snout or the scaleless skin during burrowing.

As a scaleless, nocturnal predator, this genus shares the general care cautions that apply across the electric knifefishes: no copper-based medications, reduced dosing of other treatments, and careful attention to water quality, since ammonia and nitrate are poorly tolerated. Dim lighting and secure cover matter more than usual, since the fish is naturally buried or hidden by day. Given how little is documented and how large congeners are reported to grow, this is a specialist's fish rather than a species to recommend for a general community setup — anyone encountering it in the trade should treat it as an advanced-care animal and seek out a dealer or keeper with direct experience of the genus.

Conservation

Rhamphichthys lineatus is assessed on the IUCN Red List as Least Concern. Its known range around the Ucayali River basin and the wider Amazon drainage faces the general pressures common across Amazonian freshwater habitats — deforestation, water quality changes and hydrological disruption from dams — but there is no documented evidence tying a population decline or specific threat to this species.

Many Rhamphichthys species remain data-sparse or unevaluated, reflecting how little targeted survey work has been done on this cryptic, nocturnal, sand-dwelling genus relative to more visible Amazonian fishes, so this Least Concern listing should be read against that general backdrop rather than as a dense body of population research.
