Taxonomy & naming
Rhamphichthys rostratus was described by Linnaeus in 1766 as Gymnotus rostratus, based on a specimen figured by Seba (1759); it was later moved into the genus Rhamphichthys, which it now anchors as type species. It belongs to the family Rhamphichthyidae — the sand or tubesnout knifefishes — within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name.
Gymnotiformes are bony fish, but unusual ones: nearly every species, this one included, produces a weak electric organ discharge (EOD) around its body, used for electrolocation — sensing prey, obstacles and other fish in dark or turbid water — and for electrocommunication, since each species and sex carries a recognisable discharge signature. Rhamphichthys and its relatives in Rhamphichthyidae and the related family Hypopomidae are pulse-type dischargers, producing discrete, well-spaced pulses rather than the continuous wave-type hum of the ghost knifefishes (Apteronotidae). Despite the shared common name, these South American fish are entirely unrelated to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which are bonytongues from a different order altogether — the resemblance is convergent body shape, not kinship.
Morphology
The sand knifefish has the classic gymnotiform silhouette — a long, laterally compressed, ribbon-like body tapering to a fine point, with no dorsal fin and no proper tail fin. Locomotion comes almost entirely from a very long anal fin running most of the length of the underside, thrown into travelling waves that drive the fish forward or backward without needing to bend its body, useful for a fish that spends much of its life reversing in and out of tight cover. The skin is scaleless, a trait shared across the order that leaves these fish more exposed to poor water quality and harsh medications than scaled fish.
The feature that sets Rhamphichthys apart from its relatives is the snout: it is drawn out into a long, narrow, downward-curved tube, used to probe sand and detritus for buried prey much as an anteater's muzzle probes a mound. Coloration is typically a plain brownish to olive tone, unremarkable next to the ghost knifefishes, which suits an animal that relies on electric sense rather than sight or display. Research on the electric organ's anatomy shows a heterogeneous arrangement of electrocyte types along the posterior third of the body, generating the species' pulse-type discharge; this organ and the pores that read the surrounding field run the length of the fish. Published maximum size is around 39.5 in total length in the wild, with aquarium specimens generally staying well short of that.
Habitat
Rhamphichthys rostratus is a Neotropical freshwater fish, recorded from river systems across a broad swath of tropical and subtropical South America, including Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Guyana, Colombia and Uruguay — accounts describe it in both Amazon-basin drainages and coastal rivers of the northeast. It is a benthopelagic species associated with the Amazon basin as its core range per taxonomic records, living over soft, sandy or silty bottoms rather than rocky or heavily vegetated stretches.
By day it lies buried in sand or tucked among roots and leaf litter, a typical strategy for a nocturnal pulse-type knifefish avoiding both predators and the heat and light of open water. Twilight and night are when it becomes active, emerging to work the substrate for food. In the aquarium this translates to a deep, soft sand bed for burrowing, dim lighting, and secure cover — the fish is described in the trade literature as gregarious and sociable with its own kind, doing best in a small group rather than alone.
Feeding
In the wild, Rhamphichthys rostratus feeds on benthic invertebrates, using its long tubular snout to probe sand, silt and leaf litter for buried prey that it locates largely by electrolocation rather than sight — a hunting method well suited to the murky, structurally complex margins and channels it inhabits. Its narrow, tube-like mouth restricts it to small prey items taken one at a time from the substrate.
In the aquarium it accepts live and frozen bloodworm (Tubifex) and mosquito larvae readily, and generally needs to be fed after dark or at dim twilight hours when it naturally becomes active. Because it is a specialist forager rather than an opportunistic scavenger, food should be offered where the fish can find it on or in the substrate rather than relying on it to compete at the surface.
Mating
As in other gymnotiforms, the electric organ discharge in Rhamphichthys rostratus is a plausible channel for courtship signalling in the dark — pulse-type discharges of this kind carry information on species, sex and individual identity in related genera, and are used both to advertise and to negotiate encounters with rivals and potential mates. Specific courtship behaviour has not been documented for this species in the available literature, and detailed field or laboratory accounts of its reproductive signalling are data sparse.
What can be said with more confidence is the general pattern for the family: Rhamphichthyidae are egg-layers, and spawning is presumed to take place among the same kind of cover the fish uses for shelter — sand, roots and leaf litter — rather than in open water, consistent with a fish that avoids exposure by day and night alike.
Breeding
Breeding biology in Rhamphichthys rostratus is poorly documented, both in the wild and in captivity. Sand and tubesnout knifefishes as a group are rarely bred by hobbyists, and published accounts of spawning behaviour, egg deposition sites or developmental timelines for this species are not available in the sources consulted here.
Where breeding has been reported in captive settings for South American gymnotiforms of similar habit, it has occurred incidentally in stable, well-established aquaria rather than through a repeatable induced protocol, with eggs scattered among sand or fine cover and no meaningful parental care afterward. For Rhamphichthys rostratus specifically, the honest position is that its captive reproduction remains essentially unrecorded — a species to keep well, not one with a known breeding method.
In the aquarium
This is a specialist's fish rather than a community staple. A deep bed of fine, soft sand is essential — the species spends much of the day buried or partly buried, and a sharp or coarse substrate will damage its sensitive skin and snout. Provide dim lighting, tannin-stained or shaded water, and secure hiding places (root tangles, cave-like decor, or leaf litter) so the fish feels covered during daylight hours; expect activity mainly at dusk and after dark. Aquarium references describe it as social with its own kind, so keeping more than one individual, in a large enough tank, suits its temperament better than a lone specimen.
Being scaleless, Rhamphichthys rostratus needs careful attention to water quality — stable, low ammonia and nitrate, and gentle filtration that does not blast the animal out of cover — and reduced doses of any copper-based or harsh medication, which scaleless fish tolerate poorly. Reported aquarium temperatures run about 72–82 °F. Tankmates should be calm, non-nippy species that will not harass a fish that is largely inactive by day; very small fish or shrimp may be at risk after dark, since this is a nocturnal predator hunting live invertebrates by electrolocation. Wild size is reported to reach roughly a metre, though aquarium-kept fish are consistently smaller (commonly cited around half that), so long-term housing should still assume a large, mature animal. Where available, captive-bred stock — the species has reportedly been produced in Southeast Asian aquaculture — is preferable to wild-caught.
Conservation
Rhamphichthys rostratus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2022), reflecting a wide distribution across multiple South American river systems and no evidence of a significant population decline. It is not currently a species of conservation concern.
As with other widely distributed Neotropical river fish, the main long-term pressures on its habitat are the general ones facing South American freshwater systems — deforestation, water-quality degradation and hydrological change from damming — rather than any threat specific to this species. Least Concern status at the species level does not remove the value of favouring captive-bred or responsibly sourced individuals in the trade.
