Sternopygus pejeraton is a rattail knifefish endemic to the Lake Maracaibo basin of Venezuela, a slender, tapering fish that — like every member of its order — generates a weak electric field around its body and reads that field's distortions to find its way and its food in dark water. Its local Venezuelan name, peje ratón ("mouse fish"), nods to the same long, tapering silhouette that gives the genus its rattail nickname. It swims by rippling a single long anal fin rather than beating a tail, has no dorsal fin, and can drive itself backward as easily as forward — traits shared across the New-World electric knifefishes (order Gymnotiformes) but still startling to anyone meeting the group for the first time. Reaching up to 19.5 in in males, it is among the larger species in a genus that itself runs unusually large for the family, and it produces a smooth, continuous, wave-type electrical hum rather than the pulsed discharge used by many of its Gymnotiform relatives.

Taxonomy & naming

Sternopygus pejeraton was described by Leonard P. Schultz in 1949 and belongs to the family Sternopygidae — the glass and rattail knifefishes — within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. Like all Gymnotiformes it is a bony fish but an unusual one: the order is defined by an electric organ and a single elongated anal fin used for locomotion, characters that set it apart from almost every other freshwater fish in the aquarium trade. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the taxonomic authority for the valid name.

The species epithet, pejeraton, is drawn directly from a Venezuelan vernacular name, peje ratón — "mouse fish" — likely a reference to the fish's tapering, whiskerless snout and slender build. It should not be confused with the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which share the common name "knifefish" purely by superficial resemblance and belong to a completely different order of bonytongues; there is no close relationship between the two groups. Within Sternopygus — a genus of around eleven recognized species — S. pejeraton is notable chiefly for its restricted range, confined to the Lake Maracaibo drainage rather than the wide Amazon–Orinoco distribution typical of its relatives.

Morphology

Sternopygus pejeraton has the classic rattail-knifefish shape: a laterally compressed body that tapers steadily from a moderately deep head and shoulder region back into a long, thin, whip-like tail. There is no dorsal fin and no true tail fin; propulsion comes from a single long anal fin running most of the length of the underside, thrown into a travelling ripple that lets the fish move forward or backward with equal control. The species is scaleless, like other Gymnotiformes, which leaves its skin more exposed to water quality and to certain medications than a typical scaled fish. Males reach a documented maximum of 19.5 in total length, making this one of the larger species in a genus that already runs large for the family.

Running beneath the skin along the body is the electric organ, paired with electroreceptor pores that read the field it generates. In Sternopygus this organ produces a wave-type electric organ discharge (EOD) — a continuous, tone-like hum rather than the discrete pulses used by many other gymnotiforms — a trait shared across the family Sternopygidae. Unusually for the order, members of the genus Sternopygus are reported to be active both by day and by night, rather than being strictly nocturnal like most of their relatives.

Habitat

Sternopygus pejeraton is endemic to the Lake Maracaibo basin in Venezuela, a large, low-elevation trans-Andean drainage system separate from the Amazon and Orinoco basins that hold most of its genus-mates. It is a freshwater, benthopelagic species of a broadly tropical climate, occupying the lake and its associated river systems rather than a single stream.

Congeners in Sternopygus are documented across a wide span of habitats, from fast-flowing river channels to floodplain swamps and shallow-to-deep river bottoms, and the genus's wave-type electric sense is best suited to exactly this kind of dim, structurally complex water where vision is of limited use. Specific water chemistry data for S. pejeraton itself is not well documented, but a related congener, S. macrurus, is recorded from warm water in the 72–82 °F range at a moderately soft, near-neutral to slightly acidic pH of roughly 6.0–7.2, conditions likely broadly representative of the ecology this species shares.

Feeding

Sternopygus pejeraton is reported to have a trophic level around 3.2, consistent with an omnivorous or mixed diet rather than a strict piscivore or strict invertebrate feeder. Congeners in the genus take aquatic invertebrates, small fish and even fallen fruit, foraging by electrolocation to detect prey hidden in sediment, among roots, or in low light where eyesight offers little advantage — a hunting mode shared broadly across the electric knifefishes.

Detailed feeding data specific to S. pejeraton is sparse, and its diet in the wild has not been closely studied. In captivity, related Sternopygus species take standard meaty aquarium fare — bloodworm, chopped earthworm, blackworm and similar frozen or live foods — with the expectation, based on the genus's daytime and nighttime activity pattern, that feeding is not restricted to a strict after-dark routine the way it is in most other gymnotiforms.

Mating

As in other Gymnotiformes, the wave-type electric organ discharge that Sternopygus pejeraton produces continuously is not just a navigation tool but a social signal, and courtship in the family is understood to be mediated substantially through electric-organ signalling. Documented breeding biology in the genus (from captive observations of related Sternopygus species) describes males defending territory and engaging in electric-signal courtship ahead of and during spawning, which in the wild tends to coincide with the rainy season and its rise in water level.

Sexual maturity in the genus is reached at around one year, and mating in captivity has been recorded to produce very large numbers of eggs from a single spawning event — several thousand per pairing in related Sternopygus. Species-specific courtship detail for S. pejeraton itself has not been documented, and the account here should be read as representative of the genus rather than confirmed for this species.

Breeding

Sternopygus pejeraton is an egg-layer. Reported breeding biology for the genus describes adhesive eggs roughly 0.5 in in diameter deposited among plants or submerged vegetation, most likely timed to the higher water levels of the wet season; hatching occurs after about four days, with larvae beginning to feed roughly eleven days after hatching. Parental care is minimal — eggs are left among the vegetation with little to no subsequent guarding.

This species has not been documented as bred in the home aquarium, and what is known of Sternopygus reproduction comes largely from captive data on other members of the genus rather than from S. pejeraton specifically. As with most gymnotiforms, the honest position for the aquarist is that breeding is poorly documented and not something to expect or plan for — this is a fish to keep well, not one with an established home-breeding protocol.

In the aquarium

Sternopygus pejeraton is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade and there is no established husbandry record for the species specifically; anyone keeping it would be working from the ecology and care needs documented for its genus and family. Based on that congeneric data, it would need warm water in roughly the 72–82 °F range, a moderately soft and near-neutral to slightly acidic pH, and — given its adult size of up to 19.5 in — a very large, long aquarium with ample open swimming space plus secure cover such as pipes, roots or dense planting to retreat into.

As a scaleless fish, S. pejeraton would be expected to share the group's sensitivity to ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, and to react poorly to copper-based and other harsh medications, which typically must be dosed at reduced strength for gymnotiforms. Unlike most of its order it is reported to be active during the day as well as at night, which may make it a somewhat more visible aquarium subject than strictly nocturnal relatives, but its size and specialist needs make it a fish for an experienced keeper with a very large system, not a community tank. No conclusions should be drawn about tankmate compatibility or feeding routine beyond the general expectation, typical of the order, that smaller fish and invertebrates sharing its tank are at risk of being eaten.

Conservation

Sternopygus pejeraton has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so its conservation status is formally unknown (Not Evaluated). Its restriction to a single basin — Lake Maracaibo and its associated waters in Venezuela — is nonetheless a point of ecological interest: unlike most of its genus, which ranges widely across the Amazon and Orinoco systems, this species is a basin endemic, and narrow-range endemics of this kind are generally more exposed to habitat degradation, pollution and other localized pressures than widely distributed relatives.

Lake Maracaibo is a heavily used water body, bordered by significant industrial, agricultural and urban development, and general pressures on the basin — water pollution, habitat modification and altered hydrology — are plausible long-term concerns for a fish restricted to it, though no species-specific assessment of threats to S. pejeraton exists. In the absence of a formal Red List evaluation, the responsible position is to note the narrow range rather than assert either safety or decline.
