Apteronotus cuchillo is a ghost knifefish confined to the Lake Maracaibo basin of western Colombia, a matte-dark, blade-shaped fish that swims by rippling a single long anal fin rather than beating a tail, moving backward as easily as forward. Like every member of its family it carries almost no visual advantage in the dark, tannin-tinted rivers it lives in, and instead reads its world through a weak electric field generated around its own body, a continuous high-frequency wave-type discharge used both to sense prey and obstacles in the gloom and to signal identity and sex to other knifefish. Little has been published on this species beyond its taxonomy, size and range, and it is essentially unknown as an aquarium fish outside its native basin.

Taxonomy & naming

Apteronotus cuchillo was described by Leonard P. Schultz in 1949 and placed in the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. These are bony fish, but unusual ones: Gymnotiformes are defined by an electric organ and a long ribbon-like anal fin used for propulsion, and are only distantly related to the other freshwater fishes kept in aquaria. The Apteronotidae are distinguished within the order by an electric organ built from modified nerve cells rather than muscle tissue, which produces a fast, continuous wave-type discharge — the most refined electrolocating sense in the group.

The common name "knifefish" is shared with the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), but those are bonytongues from an entirely different order; the blade-shaped body is convergent, not a sign of relatedness. Within Apteronotus, cuchillo sits among a number of poorly known South American species, most familiar to science through museum material rather than the aquarium trade. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name; "cuchillo" is Spanish for "knife", a direct nod to the fish's blade-like profile.

Morphology

Apteronotus cuchillo has the classic ghost-knifefish outline: a laterally compressed, deep-bodied fish that tapers to a slender tail, with no dorsal fin and no distinct caudal fin of the ordinary kind. Locomotion comes almost entirely from a very long anal fin running along most of the underside of the body, thrown into travelling waves that let the fish glide forward or reverse with equal control — a useful trick for backing out of the crevices and root tangles it hunts through. FishBase records 175–191 soft rays in that anal fin, and the species reaches a documented maximum of about 15.5 in total length.

As in other Apteronotidae, an electric organ runs the length of the body beneath the skin, paired with sensory pores that read the field it creates. The species is scaleless, like all gymnotiforms, which leaves it more exposed to water-quality stress and to certain medications than scaled fish. Data on colour pattern and external sexual differences are sparse for this species; dimorphism is not well documented.

Habitat

This species is a narrow-range endemic of the Lake Maracaibo basin in western Colombia and adjoining Venezuela, recorded from the Catatumbo River system that drains into the lake and, per FishBase, also from the Rio Baudó in Chocó on the Pacific slope. This puts it among the Apteronotidae found on the trans-Andean side of South America, a smaller share of the family compared to the large Amazon–Orinoco radiation.

It is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of flowing river channels rather than still water, consistent with the family's general preference for warm, soft, often turbid or tannin-stained rivers where electrolocation outperforms vision. Specific habitat descriptions for A. cuchillo beyond basin and river records are data sparse.

Feeding

FishBase assigns Apteronotus cuchillo a trophic level of 3.3, consistent with a carnivorous diet typical of the genus — small benthic invertebrates such as aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans, located in the dark largely through electroreception rather than sight. As in other ghost knifefishes, feeding activity is expected to concentrate after dark, when the species' electric sense gives it the greatest advantage over sighted competitors and prey.

Detailed field studies of this species' diet have not been located; the trophic-level figure and general family biology are the basis for this account, and finer detail on prey composition or foraging behaviour is data sparse.

Mating

As in other Apteronotidae, the electric organ discharge in this species is likely to function as a social and reproductive signal as well as a sensing tool — in the well-studied brown ghost (A. leptorhynchus), males and females shift their discharge frequency during courtship in an electrical exchange that communicates sex, size and readiness to spawn. Whether A. cuchillo shows the same wave-type courtship signalling has not been specifically documented, but it is a reasonable expectation given the shared electric-organ physiology of the family.

No species-specific account of courtship behaviour, pairing, or spawning site selection for A. cuchillo was found in available sources; this remains poorly documented.

Breeding

FishBase describes Apteronotus cuchillo as a substrate spawner in which males spawn with multiple females in groups, with eggs deposited in the substrate rather than guarded openly. Beyond that broad reproductive mode, no parental care is documented for the species, consistent with the pattern seen across Apteronotidae, where eggs are typically scattered among cover with no substantial guarding afterward.

The species is not established in the aquarium trade and there are no hobbyist breeding reports to draw on; captive reproduction, if it occurs at all, would be expected to follow the same poorly documented, rarely observed pattern as its relative the black ghost knifefish.

In the aquarium

Apteronotus cuchillo is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby outside its native Lake Maracaibo basin, and there is no meaningful body of hobbyist husbandry experience to summarise. Anything said here follows from the general biology of Apteronotidae rather than from species-specific accounts, and should be treated accordingly.

Were it kept, the working assumptions for any ghost knifefish would apply: a scaleless, nocturnal, electrolocating predator needs warm, soft, clean water with strong biological filtration, dim lighting, and secure cover such as tubes or root tangles to retreat into by day. Its scaleless skin makes it sensitive to ammonia, nitrate and to copper-based or harsh medications, which should be avoided or dosed conservatively. Given a documented size near 15.5 in, it would need a large aquarium and tankmates too big to be hunted after dark; captive-bred stock is preferable to wild collection wherever it exists, though for this species none is known to be available.

Conservation

Apteronotus cuchillo is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. As a narrow-range endemic restricted to the Lake Maracaibo basin and a small area of the Pacific slope in Chocó, it nonetheless sits in the category of gymnotiforms most exposed to local pressures — habitat degradation, pollution and land-use change within a single drainage can affect the entire population even where the current assessment is not one of elevated concern.

No commercial aquarium trade or major targeted fishery for the species was found in available sources, and specific threat data beyond the IUCN status is sparse. As with other single-basin endemics in the family, the most useful conservation note is that a wide-ranging "Least Concern" label at the species level can still mask vulnerability tied to the health of one river system.
