Like its relatives in the genus, it is a fast-bodied, silvery river fish built for foraging on fruit, seeds and invertebrates in flowing water rather than for life in a home aquarium, and Brycon as a genus spans an enormous size range — from small stream forms barely 4.5 in long to powerful river fish approaching 31.5 in. Taxonomy & naming

Brycon unicolor was described by Mosco Morales in 1988 and placed in the family Bryconidae, the group that a modern Characiformes classification separates from the pacus and silver dollars of Serrasalmidae. It is one of four Brycon species endemic to the Lake Maracaibo basin in Venezuela, part of a cis-andean radiation of the genus — species confined to drainages east of the Andes that empty toward the Caribbean rather than into the Amazon or Orinoco systems.

A taxonomic revision of the cis-andean Brycon species (Characiformes: Characidae in the older, broader sense) treats the Maracaibo-basin endemics as a distinct regional group, consistent with the type locality for B. unicolor lying within that drainage.
