Jenynsia weitzmani is a small, little-known one-sided livebearer of the Brazilian uplands, described in 2001 from a single headwater stream near Anitápolis in eastern Santa Catarina. A member of the family Anablepidae — the four-eyed fishes and their live-bearing relatives — it is one of the more cryptic species of the genus Jenynsia, marked by a single clean midlateral stripe and a fusiform body built for life in cool, clear mountain creeks. It has no presence in the aquarium hobby and almost no documented natural history beyond its original description, making it a fish far better known to taxonomists than to aquarists.

Taxonomy & naming

Jenynsia weitzmani was described in 2001 by Michael M. Ghedotti, J. F. Meisner and Paulo H. F. Lucinda in Copeia (2001(3):726–736), from material collected in eastern Santa Catarina State, Brazil. The genus Jenynsia belongs to the family Anablepidae, the one-sided livebearers and four-eyed fishes, within the order Cyprinodontiformes; FishBase places the genus in the subfamily Anablepinae. Within Jenynsia, J. weitzmani is assigned to the subgenus Plesiojenynsia, a group of headwater species distinguished by a suite of meristic and pigmentation characters.

The species is diagnosed within its subgenus by a single midlateral stripe in adults — without the dorsolateral or ventrolateral stripes or blotches seen in some relatives — together with a terminal to slightly oblique mouth, fewer than thirteen gillrakers, and the absence of the first mandibular-canal pore. Males carry a tubular gonopodium formed from modified anal-fin rays (the shortened second, fourth and fifth rays, with an enlarged seventh middle anal radial) and an elongate dorsoposterior process of the lacrimal bone, features used in the original diagnosis. Meristic counts include 10–11 dorsal soft rays, 9 anal soft rays, no spines, 33 vertebrae and 5 branchiostegal rays.

The specific epithet weitzmani is an eponym honouring Stanley H. Weitzman (1927–2017), the American ichthyologist at the Smithsonian Institution, recognised for his work on the freshwater fishes of southern Brazil and on the taxonomy of Jenynsia. The genus name itself commemorates the Reverend Leonard Jenyns (1800–1893). Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, which stands as Jenynsia weitzmani Ghedotti, Meisner & Lucinda, 2001.

Morphology

Jenynsia weitzmani is a small fish, reaching about 3 in standard length in males and around 3 in SL in females. The body is fusiform with a compressed cross-section, the typical build of an active stream-dwelling poeciliiform. Colour and pattern are subdued: the defining external feature is a single midlateral stripe running along the flank in adults, without the additional dorsolateral or ventrolateral stripes, bars or blotches found in some other members of the genus.

The mouth is terminal to slightly oblique, and the fish carries fewer than thirteen gillrakers — both characters used to separate it from its relatives within the subgenus Plesiojenynsia. Fin-ray counts are modest, with 10–11 dorsal soft rays and 9 anal soft rays and no fin spines, and the vertebral count is 33.

As in other Jenynsia, the sexes differ in the structure of the anal fin. Males possess a tubular gonopodium derived from shortened and modified anal-fin rays, the intromittent organ used to inseminate the female, and an elongate dorsoposterior process of the lacrimal bone that featured in the species' formal diagnosis. Beyond these features the published external description is sparse, and detailed live colouration in the field has not been widely documented.

Habitat

Jenynsia weitzmani is a headwater specialist of the Brazilian uplands. It is known from the type locality — an unnamed stream (córrego), a tributary of the rio Pinheiros in the upper rio Tubarão basin near Anitápolis, in eastern Santa Catarina State — at roughly 2297 ft altitude in the Serra Geral. A further record comes from the rio Bonito near Barro Branco. The species is therefore an inhabitant of cool, clear, upland (headwater) rivers and streams rather than lowland or coastal waters.

FishBase characterises the fish as freshwater, benthopelagic and subtropical, and notes that it is commonly found in upland rivers — consistent with the other members of the subgenus Plesiojenynsia, which are likewise headwater forms. The IUCN assessment describes the habitat as inland wetlands of the permanent rivers, streams and creeks type, and notes that J. weitzmani is distributed allopatrically with other Jenynsia species, occupying its own headwater reaches without overlapping their ranges.

Because the species is documented from so few sites, fine detail on its preferred water chemistry, flow and substrate is not available; the published record establishes a cool, upland, flowing-water setting in the Serra Geral but little more. The narrow known range — essentially the type locality plus one additional record — makes it one of the more geographically restricted fishes of its genus on present evidence, though its true distribution limits remain unstudied.

Feeding

Direct dietary observations for Jenynsia weitzmani have not been published, and the species' feeding ecology is effectively undocumented. FishBase reports an estimated trophic level of about 2.9, which places it as a low-level omnivore or micro-carnivore rather than a strict herbivore or a higher predator.

That estimate is consistent with the general habits of small Jenynsia and other small cyprinodontiforms of upland streams, which typically take a mixed diet of small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, drifting items and incidental algae or detritus gleaned from the streambed and water column. In the absence of stomach-content studies for this particular species, however, any more specific dietary claim would be speculation.

For an article-level summary the honest position is that the data are sparse: J. weitzmani is best described as a small omnivore of low trophic level, feeding opportunistically on the small invertebrate and plant material available in its headwater habitat, with no detailed diet recorded in the literature.

Mating

Like all members of the family Anablepidae, Jenynsia weitzmani reproduces by internal fertilisation and bears live young; it is explicitly recorded as viviparous in the original description. In the one-sided livebearers the male carries a gonopodium — in this species a tubular organ formed from shortened and modified anal-fin rays (the second, fourth and fifth, with an enlarged seventh middle anal radial) — which is used to transfer sperm to the female. This is the anablepid and poeciliiform equivalent of the gonopodium seen in the more familiar Poeciliidae, though the two families evolved their live-bearing apparatus along their own lines.

A distinctive and well-known feature of the genus Jenynsia is functional asymmetry of the genitalia: in many one-sided livebearers the gonopodium can be moved to one side only — either to the left or to the right — and females are correspondingly "left-" or "right-handed," so that a male can mate only with females of the complementary orientation. This is the origin of the common name "one-sided livebearers." Whether this laterality has been specifically documented in J. weitzmani is not stated in the available sources, but it is the characteristic reproductive arrangement of the genus to which it belongs.

Beyond the fact of internal fertilisation and viviparity, no courtship behaviour, mate-choice data or seasonal reproductive timing have been published for this species. The detail of its mating biology therefore rests on family- and genus-level patterns rather than on direct observation of J. weitzmani itself.

Breeding

Jenynsia weitzmani is viviparous, giving birth to fully formed live young rather than laying eggs — a reproductive mode confirmed in the description by Ghedotti, Meisner and Lucinda (2001) and shared across the family Anablepidae and the genus Jenynsia. After internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and delivers free-swimming juveniles.

Species-specific reproductive data are not available: brood size, gestation length, the degree of maternal provisioning (lecithotrophic versus matrotrophic), and whether superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages, known in some livebearers — occurs in this species are all undocumented. The IUCN assessment notes more broadly that the biology of J. weitzmani is poorly known, and no reproductive figures have been recorded for it.

What can be said with confidence is limited to the genus-level pattern: Jenynsia bears live young, and J. weitzmani follows that mode. Any specific brood counts or gestation periods cited for this species would not trace to a real source, so the responsible summary is that its breeding is viviparous but otherwise unstudied.

In the aquarium

Jenynsia weitzmani has no established presence in the aquarium hobby. FishBase records no aquarium-maintenance information for the species, and the IUCN assessment notes that there is no use or trade of the fish. It is a poorly known headwater endemic rather than a traded or cultured aquarium subject, and no reputable specialist care or breeding source for it appears to exist.

As a result there are no tested husbandry parameters — temperature range, water chemistry, tank size or diet recommendations — that can be honestly attributed to this species. Any aquarium guidance would have to be extrapolated from the requirements of better-known upland Jenynsia and other cool-stream cyprinodontiforms, which generally call for clean, well-oxygenated, moving water on the cooler side of tropical; but such an extrapolation is not specific to J. weitzmani and is offered only as context, not as a care sheet.

For an aquarist the practical reality is that this is a fish of scientific rather than hobby interest: a small, restricted-range one-sided livebearer documented from a handful of stream sites in Santa Catarina, with its captive requirements simply unstudied.

Conservation

Jenynsia weitzmani is assessed as Least Concern (LC, ver 3.1) on the IUCN Red List. The assessment was made on 7 November 2018 and published in 2022 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) (assessment ID 187291/1825984; citation e.T187291A1825984), having originally been completed as part of Brazil's Livro Vermelho da Fauna Brasileira Ameaçada de Extinção. The population trend is recorded as unknown, with no population data available.

The known range is narrow — the type locality near Anitápolis in the upper rio Tubarão basin plus an additional record from the rio Bonito near Barro Branco — yet the IUCN identifies no significant threats to the species, which is the basis for the Least Concern listing. There are no conservation programmes targeting it in Brazil, and it has not been recorded from any protected area.

The assessment explicitly flags the gaps: studies are needed on the species' distribution limits, population trends and basic biology. As a narrowly distributed upland endemic, J. weitzmani would benefit from such work, both to confirm that its restricted range carries no hidden risk and to fill in the natural-history blanks that currently leave it one of the lesser-known members of its genus.
