Astyanax cremnobates is a small, high-altitude tetra endemic to a pair of river basins in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, where it inhabits cold headwater streams above 800 metres elevation. Described by Bertaco and Malabarba in 2001 as part of a revision of the wide-ranging Astyanax scabripinnis species complex, it is known only from the upper Jacuí and Maquiné river systems — a restricted range that earns it Near Threatened status on the IUCN Red List and makes it a sentinel species for the health of highland Mata Atlântica streams.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax cremnobates was described by Luiz Roberto Bertaco and Luiz Roberto Malabarba in 2001 as one of two new species in a revision of the Astyanax scabripinnis species complex, a group of small, morphologically similar characids distributed across the upland streams of eastern and southern Brazil. The original description was published in a peer-reviewed Brazilian ichthyological journal; the type specimens were collected from headwater streams in Rio Grande do Sul.

Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises Astyanax cremnobates Bertaco & Malabarba, 2001 as the valid name. FishBase additionally lists Psalidodon cremnobates as an alternate combination reflecting a more recent generic reallocation within Characidae, but the original Astyanax placement remains widely used in the literature and in GBIF. Within Characidae, the scabripinnis complex represents a classic case of highland stream speciation: closely related forms with limited dispersal between drainages that have diverged sufficiently over time to be recognised as distinct species. A. cremnobates co-occurs biogeographically with A. brachypterygium, described in the same paper from overlapping southern Brazil highlands.

Morphology

Astyanax cremnobates is a small, moderately elongate characid reaching approximately 3.5 in standard length (SL) according to FishBase — modest even within the scabripinnis complex, whose members are generally small-bodied. The body is laterally compressed and fusiform, typical of an active, stream-dwelling tetra adapted to current.

Like other members of the Astyanax scabripinnis complex, it has a silvery body, a dark lateral stripe, and a small humeral spot, but the specific combination of fin-ray counts and body proportions distinguishes it from its relatives. Detailed meristic data were established in the original description and serve as the primary diagnostic characters separating it from A. scabripinnis sensu stricto and the other complex members. The species shows no remarkable colour features in life beyond the typical small-tetra pattern.

Sexual dimorphism in body form is subtle, as is characteristic of the group. There are no published data on colour differences between sexes beyond the modest size dimorphism that tends to appear at maturity in most Astyanax.

Habitat

Astyanax cremnobates occupies headwater streams of the upper Jacuí and Maquiné River basins in Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil. The species is restricted to altitudes above approximately 800 metres — a defining ecological trait encoded in its name — placing it in the montane zone of the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica), where streams are cold, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated, and subject to seasonal variation in flow and temperature.

The Maquiné basin drains to the Atlantic coast and falls within the Tramandaí-Mampituba freshwater ecoregion; the Jacuí drains westward to the Lagoa dos Patos system. Both catchments support a high level of freshwater endemism typical of isolated highland stream networks. The habitat is characterised by rocky substrates, abundant leaf litter, riparian forest cover, and clear, often cool water — conditions typical of subtropical Brazilian highland headwaters.

The restricted altitudinal and geographic range means that A. cremnobates has little scope to track habitat shifts and is acutely sensitive to any degradation of the small number of streams it occupies. Land-use change in Rio Grande do Sul — particularly the conversion of native Atlantic Forest to agriculture and pasture in upland areas — is the principal threat to these microhabitats.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary studies on Astyanax cremnobates are available in the literature reviewed here. As a member of the Astyanax scabripinnis complex and a typical highland stream characid, it is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, feeding on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, plant material, and algae — the generalist strategy common to stream-dwelling Astyanax throughout South America.

In headwater stream habitats, the diet of such species is often dominated by allochthonous input: terrestrial invertebrates falling from overhanging riparian vegetation, supplemented by aquatic insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, and algae scraped or drifted from rocky surfaces. The montane stream environment where A. cremnobates lives is typically oligotrophic, and food resources can be seasonally constrained by flood pulses and leaf-fall patterns.

Mating

Specific observations on the mating behaviour of Astyanax cremnobates in the wild have not been published in the sources available. The broader Astyanax genus is characterised by egg-scattering open spawning with no parental investment, and the scabripinnis complex members are understood to follow this general pattern.

In the wild, stream-dwelling Astyanax typically spawn during seasonal high-water periods when warmer temperatures, increased flow, and expanded habitat area may act as spawning cues. Males and females congregate over substrate or vegetation, with eggs scattered and fertilised in open water or among fine-leaved plants and leaf litter. No courtship structures, nesting, or mate guarding have been reported for any scabripinnis complex species.

Breeding

Astyanax cremnobates has not been formally bred in captivity in any published account. Its closest relatives in the scabripinnis complex are egg-scatterers that deposit adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation or over rocky substrate with no parental care; eggs are small and numerous, and adults will consume both eggs and fry if given the opportunity.

Given the species' cool, montane habitat, breeding in captivity would likely require lower temperatures than most tropical characids — probably in the range of 64–72 °F — and a seasonal stimulus. The small size and highland provenance of A. cremnobates make it a poor candidate for the ornamental trade and likely explain why formal captive-breeding records are absent. Data on clutch size, incubation period, and fry size have not been published.

In the aquarium

Astyanax cremnobates is not an established aquarium species and is essentially absent from the hobby. Its restricted Brazilian range, highland stream ecology, and Near Threatened conservation status mean it is neither commonly exported nor bred for trade. Hobbyists seeking a similar small, schooling characid from southern Brazilian streams would find more widely available species in the genus Hyphessobrycon or among temperate tetras better adapted to captive conditions.

Were it to be kept, the species would likely require cool, well-oxygenated, clean water consistent with its montane stream origin — temperatures perhaps 64–72 °F, neutral to slightly acidic pH, and high flow. As with most stream-dwelling Astyanax, it would be expected to be a peaceful, active shoaling fish that does best in groups. Any captive specimens should be assumed to be wild-caught and treated accordingly with careful quarantine and attention to water quality.

Conservation

Astyanax cremnobates is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List. The listing reflects the species' narrow endemic range — confined to the upper reaches of just two river basins in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, at altitudes above 800 metres — combined with ongoing habitat degradation. The Mata Atlântica biome, within which these highland streams sit, is one of the world's most threatened biodiversity hotspots; the Atlantic Forest has been reduced to a small fraction of its original extent, and upland remnants in Rio Grande do Sul face continued pressure from agriculture, cattle grazing, and silviculture.

The restricted distribution means that local impacts on even a few streams could significantly reduce the global population. Although formal population trend data are limited, the trajectory of habitat loss in the region gives grounds for continued concern. Because A. cremnobates is endemic to a small, well-defined area and is not present in the aquarium trade in any significant numbers, in-situ conservation of its stream habitats — particularly the maintenance of riparian forest buffers and water quality in the Jacuí and Maquiné headwaters — is the principal conservation priority for the species.
