The widemouth gambusia is one of the most narrowly endemic fishes in the New World livebearer family — a small, plain mosquitofish found in a single cluster of sulphur springs in Tabasco, Mexico, and almost nowhere else. Gambusia eurystoma lives in water laced with hydrogen sulphide, a gas toxic to most animals, sharing the toxic Baños del Azufre with only one other fish, the sulphur molly. Its broad mouth, the feature behind both its scientific and common names, points it at the surface film where oxygen is least scarce. Restricted to a few square kilometres and assessed as Critically Endangered, it is less an aquarium fish than a textbook case of how a poeciliid colonises a habitat almost nothing else can tolerate.

Taxonomy & naming

Gambusia eurystoma was described by the American ichthyologist Robert Rush Miller in 1975, from the sulphidic springs of the Baños del Azufre near Teapa, in the Mexican state of Tabasco. It belongs to the genus Gambusia, the mosquitofishes, within the subfamily Poeciliinae of the family Poeciliidae — the New World livebearers that also include guppies, mollies and swordtails. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Gambusia eurystoma Miller, 1975 as the valid name, and FishBase carries it under species code 6215.

The species name is descriptive and unusually literal: eurystoma combines the Greek eurys, "broad" or "wide," with stoma, "mouth," giving "wide-mouth" — exactly mirrored by the English common name widemouth gambusia and consistent with the Spanish guayacón del azufre, "little fish of the sulphur (springs)." The genus name Gambusia derives from the Cuban Spanish gambusino, a word meaning roughly "nothing"; to go fishing for gambusinos was an idiom for catching nothing, a wry reference to how small and unremarkable these fishes can seem.

Within its restricted system the species is well circumscribed and not easily confused, because it is one of only two poeciliids — alongside the sulphur molly, Poecilia sulphuraria — that inhabit the toxic spring waters. The standard regional checklist treatment of the genus appears in Lucinda's 2003 account of the Poeciliidae of South and Central American freshwaters, which keeps G. eurystoma as a distinct, valid endemic of the Grijalva basin.

Morphology

Gambusia eurystoma is a small fish, reaching about 1.5 in in total length in the available records, with the modest, somewhat dorsally flattened body typical of surface-oriented mosquitofishes. Like its congeners it is plainly coloured — grey to olive, without the bright spotting or fin extensions of the more familiar aquarium poeciliids — an unshowy livebearer whose interest lies in its biology rather than its appearance.

The defining feature, and the one that gives the species its name, is the broad, upturned mouth. A wide, terminal-to-superior mouth is well suited to feeding and breathing at the air–water interface, and in a habitat where dissolved oxygen is chronically low this is no accident: surface-dwelling sulphide-spring poeciliids rely heavily on the thin, better-oxygenated surface film. The mouth shape allows the fish to skim that layer efficiently for both food and air.

As in all poeciliids the sexes differ. Males are smaller and bear a gonopodium, an intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to transfer sperm to the female internally; females are larger and deeper-bodied, developing a swollen abdomen when carrying young. Beyond these family-level traits the published morphological detail for this narrowly endemic species is sparse, and finer measurements are best taken from Miller's original description rather than guessed at.

Habitat

Gambusia eurystoma is an extreme habitat specialist, endemic to the sulphidic springs of the Baños del Azufre near Teapa, in Tabasco, southern Mexico, within the Grijalva river basin. These are spring-fed waters rich in hydrogen sulphide (H2S), a gas that is acutely toxic to most aquatic animals because it blocks cellular respiration, and that also drives oxygen levels down — making the habitat both chemically poisonous and hypoxic. Only two fishes are found there: the widemouth gambusia and the sulphur molly, Poecilia sulphuraria, both extremophile poeciliids adapted to conditions that exclude virtually all other vertebrates.

The recorded water parameters reflect a warm, neutral-to-alkaline tropical spring system: temperatures of roughly 75–84 °F, pH around 7.2–7.8, and hardness in the range of about 5–20 dH. The fish is freshwater, benthopelagic and non-migratory, but the figures that matter most are the ones that do not appear on a standard parameter chart — the elevated sulphide and depressed oxygen that define the niche.

The geographic footprint is tiny. The IUCN assessment gives an extent of occurrence of no more than 62 mi² and an area of occupancy of only about 4 mi², with the species known from a single location. Surface-dwelling behaviour and aquatic surface respiration — gulping the oxygen-richer surface film — are among the adaptations that let it persist in water this hostile, but they cannot offset how little of the world it actually occupies.

Feeding

Detailed diet studies specific to Gambusia eurystoma are sparse, but its trophic position and feeding mode can be read from its biology and from FishBase, which places it at a trophic level of about 3.1 — the range expected of a small omnivorous-to-micro-predatory poeciliid. Like other mosquitofishes it is best understood as an opportunistic feeder, taking small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, algae and detritus as availability allows.

The broad, upward-facing mouth is a strong clue to where much of that feeding happens: at and just below the surface. In a sulphidic, low-oxygen spring the surface film is both the most breathable layer and a concentration zone for drifting and emerging invertebrates, so a wide-mouthed surface skimmer is well placed to exploit it. This dual use of the air–water interface — for respiration and for food — is a recurring theme among sulphide-spring poeciliids.

Because the species is a narrow endemic of an unusual chemical environment rather than an aquarium subject, there is little husbandry-derived feeding information to draw on, and it would be speculative to detail a captive regime. The conservative summary is that it feeds as a small surface-oriented poeciliid omnivore within its toxic spring system.

Mating

Gambusia eurystoma reproduces by internal fertilisation, the defining reproductive strategy of the poeciliid livebearers. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays; there is no external spawning and no egg-laying into the substrate. As is general in Gambusia, courtship is minimal and males instead pursue females and attempt rapid copulations, a tactic well documented across the mosquitofishes.

Females of poeciliids can typically store viable sperm internally for extended periods, allowing successive broods to be produced from a limited number of matings — a useful trait in a small, isolated population where encounters may be constrained. Species-specific behavioural data for G. eurystoma are limited, however, and the picture here is drawn from the well-established reproductive pattern of the genus and family rather than from dedicated studies of this fish.

What makes mating in this species notable is its context: it occurs in toxic, hypoxic sulphidic water. Reproducing successfully under conditions that exclude almost all other fishes is part of what defines G. eurystoma as an extremophile poeciliid, even where the fine details of its mating system remain undescribed.

Breeding

As a poeciliid livebearer, Gambusia eurystoma is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing young and gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than releasing eggs. In Gambusia the mode is lecithotrophic — the embryos are nourished mainly by yolk, and there is no true placenta of the kind seen in some other poeciliid genera. The newborns are fully formed miniature fish, able to swim and feed from birth.

Mosquitofishes are generally classed as highly resilient breeders, and FishBase places G. eurystoma in its high-resilience category with an estimated minimum population doubling time of under fifteen months — a reproductive capacity that, in principle, allows quick recovery from short-term declines. That resilience operates only within the constraints of the single spring system the species inhabits; high fecundity cannot expand a range hemmed in to a few square kilometres.

Species-specific figures for brood size, gestation length and the presence or absence of superfetation (the ability to carry overlapping broods at different developmental stages, known in some poeciliids) have not been clearly established for this fish in the cached sources, and are better left undescribed than invented. The dependable statement is that it bears live, yolk-nourished young in the manner of its genus.

In the aquarium

Gambusia eurystoma is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. It is a Critically Endangered single-site endemic of toxic sulphur springs, of interest to ichthyologists and conservationists rather than to hobbyists, and it has no place in the general aquarium trade. There is no body of husbandry knowledge for keeping it, and given its conservation status the appropriate stance is that wild collection for the hobby would be actively harmful.

Its very habitat works against captive maintenance: replicating chronically sulphidic, hypoxic water in a home aquarium is neither practical nor desirable, and the surface-respiration adaptations that let the fish live in such water reflect a specialisation that ordinary aquarium conditions do not call for. The recorded tolerances — roughly 75–84 °F, pH about 7.2–7.8, moderate hardness — describe a warm tropical spring, but the defining sulphide chemistry is the point, not the temperature.

For anyone genuinely interested in the sulphide-spring poeciliids, the responsible engagement is through the scientific literature and conservation efforts surrounding the Baños del Azufre system, not through attempts to keep this fish. We deliberately give no care rating here, because recommending it as a tank subject would misrepresent both its needs and its precarious status.

Conservation

Gambusia eurystoma is assessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) — the criteria triggered by an extremely small, declining range. The assessment records an extent of occurrence of no more than 62 mi², an area of occupancy of only about 4 mi², and a single known location, together with a continuing decline in the extent and quality of its sulphidic-spring habitat. The species was assessed in November 2018 and the listing has been carried forward through subsequent Red List updates.

The entire risk profile flows from that pinpoint distribution. Because the fish exists only in one small sulphur-spring system near Teapa, Tabasco, any local degradation — water extraction, changes in spring flow or chemistry, pollution, or other disturbance of the Baños del Azufre — falls directly and disproportionately on the whole species. It shares this exposure with its sole companion fish, the equally endemic and threatened sulphur molly, Poecilia sulphuraria.

Protecting Gambusia eurystoma therefore means protecting one specific, chemically unusual place rather than managing a widespread population. Its high intrinsic reproductive rate offers some buffer against short-term shocks, but cannot compensate for the loss or alteration of the only habitat it has. For an aquarist, the relevant conclusion is simple: this is a fish to read about and to support in situ, not to seek out, collect, or keep.
